The absolute “innocence” of the wording of the (English translation of the) chorus is spectacular. Like, simply observing “It’s missing, there’s just nothing at all, yes indeed. Even though we only did what we were told, even though we were good kids. Why? It’s terrifying.” Like… it’s not tinged with anger or ego or anything it’s just pure trusting wide-eyed “what happened? where did it go? what did I do wrong?” and it just hits, like “the feelings of your wounded inner child” so perrrrrfectly.
Ah... From the first sentences, I think I understand what this song is about! It is what the first chapters of psychoanalysis say. "What is missing?", we're carrying this question throught our whole life, being brought to this life by a mother that wasn't ready to give us enough love / who didn't want us, she gave birth because she was told to, "we're told to". And I personally know many people who feel rejected and unworthy of life just by the fact of their existence. "Something's missing", and this "something" is for sure love, a base love that we have to recieve at the age of at least 0-3. Or else we're going to wander through life feeling like we don't deserve anything good in love, that we're not good enough or that we shouldn't even exist and so why was it all even for? "Those are cute like us have big ears, big eyes" of course it's all about children, babies, and at this point of life I'm certain that we should pay much more attention to children than we do now. Children are us and they never die inside us. If healthy, a person can always be childlike and happy and lively. If not, this inner child just gets suppressed, suffocating and struggling, angry at the older self, there is where depression comes from. And it is (and actually always was) happening scarily often. So please, take care of children, at least of that one who is inside you, crying for comfort. Be kind to them. Only you can be (the best one) parent to them.
There are also a lot of symbolic images of birth and reproductive mechanisms/organs which is not vulgar at all in this context! Just the nature of creating a new life, isn't it beautiful?
I may be missing the mark here, but I think this song is about growing up and struggling with adulthood. "We came, just as we were told, but there's nothing here" seems to me like it could refer to being a kid, and being told that when you grow up, everything will be better. You can be whatever you want, do whatever you want, all because you're an adult. As a kid you romanticize adulthood, and you can't wait to graduate and grow up. But then when you get there, it's nothing like you dreamed. You wait your whole childhood to grow up, only to find that it's often boring and lifeless. For a lot of people, adulthood means to wake up, work, sleep, repeat, and all for just barely enough money to get by. "tick tick, the clock jumps. tick-tock broken into pieces." could refer to time going by, but life only getting more difficult as more is expected from you. "Why is our journey leading nowhere at all?" could be specifically talking about the lack of fulfillment, and the fear of the future. Feeling like you don't know what to do with your life. Lastly, the line "We've lost it, inside somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, inside the toy that was taken away" Could refer to losing the child-like innocence and hope that comes with being a kid ambitious about their future, now that they've grown up and faced the world. Again, maybe I'm missing the mark, but it was fun to try and piece together an interpretation :)
That line resonated with me too. This song reminded me of how kids are pressured to go into college, but once they get there many students find that there isn't a career path for them, and they may drop out to find the work they want to do (like creatives that choose to pursue music/art instead)
Not being able to find love as an adult and or not getting enough love as an child could also fit into this. Romanticising love and getting married only to find out you might not be able to get said thing could be crushing to people who are fixated on it.

This is the first point a piece of media has made me cry in a long long time. I’m sixteen at the moment, I go to a good school, I’m in therapy, my parents are fine, but in-spite of all this I can’t help but feel like it’s cruel that I’m born and raised just to suddenly feel like I’m on the verge of growing up and everything is going faster and faster and I’m scared. I remember idolizing all of the older kids and now that I’m finally on the older end I just feel like nothing happened but anxiety and self hatred being brought on by ocd, and I just barely ever got to have the kind of experience I’d wanted so badly. It’s unfair. Great job kikuo! you’ve perfectly illustrated what it’s like to have baby’s first midlife crisis. I love your music so much and this song is so real, my emotional state just got completely destroyed. 10/10 lyrics, keep doing what you do!
This is just my interpretation, but I feel like this song could be viewed as someone who died expecting to go to some kind of heaven, only to find that there's nothing there for them on the other side. In the video, the singer's journey starts with their birth, which is shown by the character being pieced together to form a person. We also see their heart being watered like a plant and growing a sprout, representing how they were nurtured and gained life experience during their time in this world. The "small light" (and the shot of the lighthouse) represents the hope that guides them and encourages them to persevere through all of life's challenges--the promise of another, better place in the distance (Heaven/the afterlife) which is represented by the moon. The lighthouse's surroundings and the moon briefly turn into chunks of computer code, leaving only the lighthouse, before fading into light. This shows that the "destination" may not actually be real, even though the hope of reaching it remains. The next scene shows the character looking in the mirror as the singer evaluates themselves. Cuteness is often associated with innocence and purity, which is why they say they're cute with "big ears, round eyes, a small mouth, a tiny body," etc. They believe that if they're a good person during their time here, then surely they'll be rewarded when it's all over, right? The version of them behind the other side of mirror is how they imagine themselves to be once they've "crossed over to the other side" after death. However, the they can't actually see what's behind the mirror, or if there's anything behind it at all. They can only see their own reflection; their worldly self. We see the character "sailing" through life until they reach the end of their journey, about to cross the threshold between life and death. The giant crowned figure guarded by two swords is their god who's about to judge them, and the row of hands opening up in the next shot are the gates of heaven opening. The person's heart stops beating and fades into more computer code. We see the character in front of the mirror again, but this time, there's only one of them, showing how their idealized image of the other side was a lie--there's nothing on the other side. But again, they can't see this because they can only see their reflection in the mirror. They won't know what's *really* on the other side until they actually cross over. The character is lifted by their creator into the afterlife. But there's something sinister about how the music builds and the scene goes dark like a horror movie as they're face-to-face with their supposedly "benevolent" creator. We see the character traveling towards the moon (Heaven), but they're not actually getting any closer to it. They realize that they can never reach it because it doesn't exist. They're stuck in the nothingness forever. Why? What did they do wrong? They were a good person their entire life; they did exactly as they were told ("Even though we only came here like told to, even though we were good kids"). Terrified, they look back on their life with dread because they know it was all for nothing. They frantically search for some kind of meaning, but all they can find is the sad remains of a meaningless life that's been thrown away. The shot of the heart now shows the sprout as dead and wilted now that their existence on Earth has vanished. All that's left is nothing.
There's also the imagery of the apple, a notorious Christian symbol to refer to the cause of humanitys fall from eden, a direct symbol of the afterlife, so the image of the apple in the mouth could be seen as a metaphor for not being allowed into heaven but having not committed any heinous sins, you'd be destined for the nothingness of limbo to repent
And THAT is why many are under the stress of trying to balance between "living their life to the fullest" and "fulfilling their duties" in order to reach heaven in the afterlife. It requires a certain level of belief for someone to decide whether they want to spend their lives doing what they're purely "supposed" to do when there could be a possibility that they may never get the chance ever again.
This songs just depict horrid of abortion tho, from how baby is making in love & then they just lost their life bc their parents didn't want baby anymore & discard them like broken toy
1:57 The character doing "See no evil, Hear no evil, speak no evil" is a interesting detail to put honestly. Saying "It's missing, missing, missing" while doing so.
This is crazy good. The visuals remind me a lot of Madoka Magica, specifically the witch labyrinths. It's just super chaotic, random, and unnatural, but it all follows a sort of theme and pattern.
Every song of Kikuo is so imaginative and unique, not to mention the consistently high production value. I never get tired of going through his discography every so often ❤ ❤
Absolutely wonderful and catchy song, Kikuo never disappoints ! Some of the lyrics really do hit a whole lot, especially the "Why does our journey lead us nowhere ?" and "There's nothing at all. Why is there nothing at all ?". With how it seems the character is representing a kid, with all the metaphors and suggestions it's someone young and small, and how they especially at first look at themselves in the mirror and put their hands on their cheeks, like a young child would realizing this is "them"... Is this song about the loss of innocence and childlike wonder about the world ? Exploring first this world, being told what is and what isn't and searching for a meaning. Then slowly realizing that there isn't actually any reason for us to be here, just that we simply exist. That there is no definite answer to the "Why am I here ?" and that the thought can be scary and daunting to overcome. It makes me feel that way at least-
Please check Japanese translation because it is pinky and cute. I didn’t focus on this song before this mv released, but thanks to this wonderful mv, I could realize how good this song is. I especially like the hands’ opening’ even though the sound is ‘ clapping’. I love you all Kikuo san and Inoie san! ❤I will make effort to understand what these lyrics mean. I am just studying English so please forgive my mistakes 😅
@@French_Itto Oh? Really? I tried checking the French subtitles and it doesn't show in the video for some reason even when i made sure i had it on... I'm on mobile and sometimes, there are some styles of subtitles that only work well on PC so it could be just that (Note: I'm sorry if i accidently made some sort of grammer or spelling mistake while writing this, English isn't my native language despite how much i used it especially on the internet)
Kikuo is a legendary composer/ producer/ musician. This music video reminds me when Tame Impala was growing fast & collaborating with different artists with MV's. I am so excited for what comes next for Kikuo. Loving the whole album from this year & always enjoying the old ones!
Kikuo is one of those artists that just seems to get better and better as time goes on. I love his older stuff, but he really has come into his own over the years. Wonderful song as always!
Contrary to what other people think this song is about, I feel like this song is about self-exploration. It's about this one person, who believes that they are missing a part of themselves. Maybe it's looks, because the song states "Those who are cute like us have big ears and big, round eyes, right?" Even the person themselves think that they are missing something. Then when they do their own self-exploration, they find out that they are indeed missing something, but they can't find it even when they set out on their self-exploration journey. There is no way of getting it back.
Ughhhh this MV captured the feeling of this song so well!!! The lollipops surrounding the heart and the heart braces visuals were just gorgeous, wow. This is one of my favorites from the album along with みずみずユッユ so I am so so happy it got an MV ^-^ ありがとうきくおさん!
My body kept tingling every time i repeated the song to try and understand what it means, creating so many stories about the same song, i seriously love kikuo oh my god, with only 1 song i can dream and imagine so many things
@@saidd1si think the song is about being brought to life by someone because that someone was told to (by society), and now we're living because we were told to, seaeching for something to complete us but finding nothing at the end
@@saidd1sThe MV at first is literally the creation of a person (a baby, babies have big eyes, big ears, are cute) which its first sound that it hears is a heartbeat (of a mother), then the protagonist continues living on, searching for something that can't actually be found, and eventually creating other person (that's what i think the hands opening up mean, they look like utherus imo, and seconds before you can see how a mouth is chewing an apple, in reference to Adam and Eva's story), in summary, the song's about the life cycle and how we're living in that cycle without asking why but at the same time searching for that "something" that'll make us feel less empty
this really gives a big vibe like chiri chiri juso or kaleidoscope. this is so amazing man. I love how kikuo can show the feel of horror, emptiness and space. thats amazing man
I love this song so much. And well, adding to the theory of the psychoanalytic analysis, I think it’s talking about some stuff: - the looking-glass-phase. (As shown in the video when the little human was looking at the mirror) According to psychoanalysis, in this phase the person can finally recognize themselves in the mirror and occurs at young age. At first, the child is joyful to see themselves “complete”. Nontheless, this happiness only lasts for moments, since what was recognized in the mirror was only an image of themselves, not the true selves. -Another concept that is vastly talked in the video is the “missing missing” and I’m pretty much sure it’s talking about the “lack”. This is a psychoanalytical concept that means that we as humans do not know what we want. What we are made for. We are always searching for things to satisfy our emptiness but it will always remain since it’s part of our essence. -I think it also makes reference of the “Big Other” (that big thing with an eye)according to psychoanalysis it’s the symbolic order, the language “is a hypothetical observer watching our every action and conversation, whose demands we obey and for whom we perform” the culture, society. -Lastly, I think it makes reference to “object a” something we lost the moment we enter into language. I think it references at the end this object with the “toy taken away” because this object is sometimes referred as this mark that is left on us that keeps us longing, desiring for stuff. Sorry if this was long and it may not explain things well, but I learnt psychoanalysis in Spanish and it’s difficult to translate it to English. Nontheless, I just love this song because I think it references a lot of psychoanalytical stuff.
I love that this song has so many interpretations! To me, this song is more about losing passion for something you used to love. It talks about seeing a light that makes your heartbeat pound. For me, my passion used to make my heart pound with the possibilities, and it was kind of like a "light", like in the song. But for the missing part, I feel like pursuing that passion and obsessing over it makes you lose interest, making you lose it along the way, like it says somewhere in the end. Or it could mean you just gradually lost interest for something you loved over time. Or it could mean achieving something, "we came here like told to", but then realizing that it wasn't all that you thought it was. Another thing that I think this song could be about is falling out of love, something that used to make your heartbeat pound now is just missing. anyways, even if there isn't any deep meaning, this song is amazing!
i think this song is about growing into an adult and realizing it isnt the same as you pictured it as a kid. one of my fav kikuo songs because the lyrics and sounds are so bittersweet.
the world is unfair. even if someone is always kind, terrible things may happen to them for no reason. even if someone works overtime and pushes themselves into exhaustion, there's no guarantee that they'll be rewarded or even recognized for their effort. even if we spend our whole lives being devout in faith, loved ones still pass away and tragedies still happen, and we wonder "why would someone i worship let this happen?" or "i did exactly as i was told, so why aren't i happy?" a lot of young people today feel like they don't deserve to live in this world because they haven't accomplished enough when they should be able to enjoy life day by day. it is truly terrifying, even to an adult, that we have to live in a world like this, and i think that's why this song in particular is so fantastic- kikuo takes these harsh topics and shows us the strange beauty that comes with them. it's always great to see people connecting and being honest with their pain in the comments (even being able to connect through different languages) and allowing us to accept that yes, the world can be awful, but if we share that pain with others who understand how we feel, we can make beautiful music and art like this. it's okay to feel like you need to give up. it's okay to feel hopeless, and it's okay to not know where you're going, just as i think it's okay to be tempted by that "shiny ideal life" we dream of, but i think remembering that the true joy is nurturing the things that used to make you happy when you were a child is very important in times like that. even if the toy was taken away from you when you decided you couldn't be a child anymore doesn't mean that you can't buy a new one

@@maidenrelish5906 Oh, ok. I get it now 🤌
This is the first point a piece of media has made me cry in a long long time.
Same, just turned 17

Niceeeee (there's so many theories on this vid lmao)
Also (imo) the part on 0:56 where the hands are spreading are probably related to the gesture you make when praying at church.
This songs just depict horrid of abortion tho, from how baby is making in love & then they just lost their life bc their parents didn't want baby anymore & discard them like broken toy
the art is so gorgeous, I like how Kikuo's MVs are stylistically unique and fit the beautiful experimental qualities of His music

the gesture of "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil"
and all the apples floating to her left and right
i think they mean something!

This is crazy good. The visuals remind me a lot of Madoka Magica, specifically the witch labyrinths. It's just super chaotic, random, and unnatural, but it all follows a sort of theme and pattern.
that’s what I thought!
this!!
Every song of Kikuo is so imaginative and unique, not to mention the consistently high production value. I never get tired of going through his discography every so often ❤ ❤

kikuo your music saved me and I'm forever grateful for it, it makes me feel alive
It makes me feel that way at least-
I LOVE THIS SM !!! Just fan of the way kikuo's songs always have that "childish" vibe, also the intrumental and voice are fire
You don’t have any mistakes in your comment! Very good and expressive !!
I decided to see how the Japanese subtitles were and OMG! I LOVE IT!!!
@@Kokomi_Ocean_Paradise Kinda late but there's also the french subtitle for some reason?
@@French_Itto Oh? Really? I tried checking the French subtitles and it doesn't show in the video for some reason even when i made sure i had it on...
I'm on mobile and sometimes, there are some styles of subtitles that only work well on PC so it could be just that
(Note: I'm sorry if i accidently made some sort of grammer or spelling mistake while writing this, English isn't my native language despite how much i used it especially on the internet)
@@Kokomi_Ocean_Paradise I think it might just be on PC and youtube on TV ;-;
(Note: Don't worry, English isn't my native language either :) )
Kikuo is a legendary composer/ producer/ musician. This music video reminds me when Tame Impala was growing fast & collaborating with different artists with MV's. I am so excited for what comes next for Kikuo. Loving the whole album from this year & always enjoying the old ones!
KIKUO HAS GROWN IN THESE VISUALS FR ITS LIKE A WHOLE NEW ERA
For a second I didn't notice it was kikuo until I saw the channel
It's interesting seeing more of a different style from the older videos from kikuo
Ughhhh this MV captured the feeling of this song so well!!! The lollipops surrounding the heart and the heart braces visuals were just gorgeous, wow. This is one of my favorites from the album along with みずみずユッユ so I am so so happy it got an MV ^-^
I love "water, water, yu, yu"
@@wkei my guy, that's the name of the song, I don't know what you want from me
@@cadeallison1102 what did I do?
@@wkei the quotation marks around the song title felt sarcastic, I'm sorry if I interpreted it the wrong way
@@cadeallison1102 I think they meant to separate the song name from what I understand
My body kept tingling every time i repeated the song to try and understand what it means, creating so many stories about the same song, i seriously love kikuo oh my god, with only 1 song i can dream and imagine so many things
What do you think it means? I still dont really get it so far myself
@@saidd1sTHAT! Or the song is actually about abortion ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
i used to think it was impossible to top kikuo's old music, yet here we are. bravo, kikuo!

I love this song so much. And well, adding to the theory of the psychoanalytic analysis, I think it’s talking about some stuff:
- the looking-glass-phase. (As shown in the video when the little human was looking at the mirror)
According to psychoanalysis, in this phase the person can finally recognize themselves in the mirror and occurs at young age.

The timing of this masterpiece is perfectly in alignment with my mental state right now.
Kikuo I love you, always providing the goods 🫶
Another thing that I think this song could be about is falling out of love, something that used to make your heartbeat pound now is just missing.
anyways, even if there isn't any deep meaning, this song is amazing!
i think this song is about growing into an adult and realizing it isnt the same as you pictured it as a kid. one of my fav kikuo songs because the lyrics and sounds are so bittersweet.

the world is unfair. even if someone is always kind, terrible things may happen to them for no reason. even if someone works overtime and pushes themselves into exhaustion, there's no guarantee that they'll be rewarded or even recognized for their effort. even if we spend our whole lives being devout in faith, loved ones still pass away and tragedies still happen, and we wonder "why would someone i worship let this happen?" or "i did exactly as i was told, so why aren't i happy?"
a lot of young people today feel like they don't deserve to live in this world because they haven't accomplished enough when they should be able to enjoy life day by day. it is truly terrifying, even to an adult, that we have to live in a world like this, and i think that's why this song in particular is so fantastic- kikuo takes these harsh topics and shows us the strange beauty that comes with them. it's always great to see people connecting and being honest with their pain in the comments (even being able to connect through different languages) and allowing us to accept that yes, the world can be awful, but if we share that pain with others who understand how we feel, we can make beautiful music and art like this.
it's okay to feel like you need to give up. it's okay to feel hopeless, and it's okay to not know where you're going, just as i think it's okay to be tempted by that "shiny ideal life" we dream of, but i think remembering that the true joy is nurturing the things that used to make you happy when you were a child is very important in times like that. even if the toy was taken away from you when you decided you couldn't be a child anymore doesn't mean that you can't buy a new one
