I was at this concert and still remember how wonderful it was. I was with my girlfriend who became my wife on 2 February 1974❤. Celebrating the big 50 in a few months.
An opening to a concert like this is timeless and will never be beaten, absolutely wonderful. I am now 79 years old and have loved it from the start. All the best from Australia
G,day Bob, I,m 74 I remember this like it was yesterday, one of my biggest regrets in life was never seeing this concert in real life. the whole show was incredible, and this prologue must go down in history as one of the best ever. Diamond was one of the most under rated singers ever, basically every show was a masterpiece. have a good one mate.
I was in the Army in 1972, in Germany, I'm 73 now and I bought the LP as soon as it came out and wore it out playing it over and over again. The prologue really is the best opening ever. I came home on leave and bought the LP for my brother, who, like me is a life long Neil Diamond fan. I can flit between Neil and Queen, who's shows have been fantastic, but i always prefer listening to the master that is Neil Diamond.
I was living in Utah when Neil Diamond announced two concerts. One at my University of Utah in Salt Lake City and one at Provo at Brigham Young University a uniquely prissy Mormon University where you can’t wear denim or buy a Coke or Pepsi The administration at BYU saw this album cover and cancelled the concert. Neil increased his number of concerts at Salt Lake City so that folks including many Mormons could attend from Idaho, Wyoming and all of Utah. I sat in line for 24 hours in sub freezing temps so we could get good tickets. Best concert I’ve ever been…1970s.
One of the few "secular" bands my Mom likes is Neil Diamond. She had this album. When i was older we saw him in concert together, but I can't imagine having been in the audience for this, hearing this amazing prolgue.
I still have my ✨m💖m's✨ Neil Diamond albums🎶, we sang and danced together🎶✨, and i had a friend Bobby van Niekerk, he died on a very young age✨💖✨, he was a huge Neill Diamond&David Bowie fan, and he was such a f great singer🎶may the universe have their s💫(u)ls, still hear you 2 singing in my dreams my beautiful m💞m and friend, both always in my he💖rt and in my thoughts, luv u both always and for ever more...always and beyond✨♾️💫💖💫♾️✨
I could have lived without Porcipine Pie and Soggy Pretzels, but my soul has fed on this album for about 30 years. Best album for a long drive through God’s country. 💕
Never has and never will be. My youngest daughter's first concert was Neil when she was 4 and at 29 walked down the aisle at her wedding to this prologue. The best
This is the only record our whole family, Silent Gen Parents and Boomer Babies, could listen to and all enjoy. If we kids put it on the folks would say, "turn it up!"
It's such a shame that this couldn't be captured on video as it would've been brilliant to see how it played out. Absolutely beautiful. How lucky to be there and experience this live. Stunning in oh so many ways.
Just this morning I was telling a person on RUclips that this was the greatest opening by an orchestra on any Diamond song or album ,his argument was " coming to America" which is very good but definitely not as great as this 👏👏👏👏👏
Saw Neil's gigs three times, and they were spectacular! 🎵🎸🎻📯🔔🥁🪘!! In de hoop dat mijn lieve vriend dit stuk, de proloog en de knapperige mueslisuite net zo mooi en leuk vindt als ik... Big Drums🥁🪘 voor je! Blijf veilig!!❤💯🤩😂 Charly The Drummer, The Drummer!!
I wonder if many people can actually imagine what this must have been like live? Imagine sitting there with the love of your life, on a warm and balmy night, the anticipation building for the concert then all of a sudden this incredible prologue starts, building up to the final crescendo, and then a spectacular concert begins. It must have been just a magical experience, very lucky people who were there!
This has never ceased moving me to tears from it's sheer beauty. No matter how many times I've heard it. It's of the divine in it's scope. It's a hymn to the dawn of the day the lord has made. Tell me I'm wrong.
In 74 my mom was talking about Benny Goodman and Sinatra. I was 11 my sister was 15. She asked us to name anyone that would do better My sister said Elton John, I said Neil Diamond
I have the original album to this concert, purchased several months after having been at Griffith Park at the Greek Theater for this concert. Little did we know it was to be recorded into a live album. Neil Diamond most incredible performer of our time!
my dad bought this album with a gift token he had been given for his birthday. When he put it on and hearing the strings he thought he had got the wrong record. A couple of minutes later, blown away. Neil Diamond fan for life off the back of this stunning album. Needless to say I grew up listening to it as a kid and love the whole album, in particular side 1 of the first LP and side 2 of the second LP.... Done Too Soon, Cherry Cherry, Holly Holy, I am I said, Brother Love's Salvation Show / Soolaimon.
I am a bit like your dad, I was new to NZ when someone payed this LP to me. That was it, I went out and bought it and I was hooked for life..... and now in my seventies it is still the very best Recording of all time. As much as I love Queen, ND is still top of my list... In fact I wore the first set of Lp's out and bought another set! Now have it on CD too but not the same feeling about the music! NOwadays it brings tears to my eyes of good memories in the mid 70's but I still listen to it. God Bless Neil Diamond xxx
I was 16 years old when my mom passed away, and she loved Neil. She was a very musically talented person and we listened to him all the time. Hot August Night is one of the most Epic albums ever produced by any performer. I know every song and love every word. Joe Louis Arena 1981 concert with my mom. Miss you everyday. 🙏
This album is the soundtrack of the most joyful gatherings with family and close friends and our age gaps made no difference, we all had our grove moves going when he started singing on this song. To this day at 60yrs it warms my heart so that I get emotional when I hear it. Thank you for sharing.
Llevo cincuenta años escuchando música , la mejor música. Y por lejos esta es la mejor obertura que he escuchado. Me pone los pelos de punta. Genial, muchas gracias Neil.
Yo tengo 65..y me sigue emocionando .
I remember a time when Chanel 9 Adelaide used this piece of music for their main theme. In between programs they would show the clock with this playing in the background.
I was 9 when this album came out and my parents played it often (I still have the original 'LP') - to this day, I still remember every note and word. It is unforgettable, emotive music and I'm so grateful for the legend of Neil Diamond.
It's morbid, but i would love the prologue played at my funeral, maybe with showing pictures on a screen of me in my younger days, and as it gets more upbeat, pictures of me having fun.
I was 12 when I listened to this. I was reading the inside of the album. What was written. It was magical as I was reading he was there. With me. The rest is history
He was never better than this. He would become a self-parody. It’s a shame, too. He was as fresh and creative as anyone in the time of his early career.
Self-parody? I agree he was fantastic here, but I enjoyed every single Neil Diamond concert I attended. His last tour, at the age of 76, still earned him excellent reviews. Check Google. And some of his late-career albums (12 Songs, Home Before Dark) are fantastic, Tennessee Moon and Melody Road also being very fine albums.
I was at this concert and still remember how wonderful it was. I was with my girlfriend who became my wife on 2 February 1974❤. Celebrating the big 50 in a few months.
OMG Glory to you and your wife, how wonderful to be part of this great moment in music!
We all just listened afterwards!
Cheers 🥂
Wonderful!!!
Seriously.. that is awesome!! Everyone I knew had that LP ,or cassette (remember those ?).. Lots of love from Australia

You're so right Alan! That intro just makes my heart soar! The whole album is great!✌️
Pure magic!
This intro takes me back to those times when i was still only 14 years old. But it stayed with me for all those years. Best intro ever!!!!
In 74 my mom was talking about Benny Goodman and Sinatra. I was 11 my sister was 15. She asked us to name anyone that would do better My sister said Elton John, I said Neil Diamond
I love it, but, I also love the African Suite---I would love to hear it live just one time
Ik hoorde dit nummer in 1974 en vanaf dit nummer ben ik een grote fan van Neil Diamond
Most people think of Neil Diamond with the Jazz singer but to me this was diamond at his best
One of the best!! Absolutely awesome
The first time I heard this album I was in awe and that awe has remained with me ever since god bless Neil diamond
Best ever concert Prologue from anyone, this can't be played to loud. !!

This is one of the reasons why I, myself bing a Dutchman, am so fond of the great state of California.
This is so epic it brings tears to my eyes. The music, the impact of the orchestration and the memories of those days…..
That buildup is amazing is it not?
