Such prowess that he holds can rival that of the gods, this suggests that he is not from Teyvat. As Teyvat has never ever produced, by its laws, citizens as higher than their gods.
Perhaps he seeks to revive the 2nd descender. The fatui’s are gathering all gnosis after all. And the gnosis are the remains of the 2nd descender. This makes the primordial flame the last & most important piece of the puzzle.

If she is a phoenix, she has a lifespan of 500 years (give or take depending on which civilization's legend you hear read up on). It's been 500 years since the fall of Khaenri'ah... perhaps Mavuika is putting on a façade, and this year's tournament is the most important one of all. It'll name the successor to the Pyro Archon Throne. Il Capitano seeks to take the throne through the tournament, but he is already aware of Mavuika's status (and subsequent haste for finding a replacement). Il Capitano is one of the oldest members of the Fatui, it wouldn't be that far off to assume he already know Mavuika/has some kind of rapport with her (especially given their encounter in the trailer now). It's like a little secret between the two, where Mavuika knows that if he wins the tournament the gnosis will assuredly go to the Fatui -- at the cost of Il Capitano. By that I mean, he'll be imbued with the gnosis and the pyro archon status. But will then the removal of that gnosis (and whatever pain, loss of power, etc. associated with that) will be laid upon him and not Mavuika. Mavuika will be free of the curse in a sense, not having to die as a phoenix -- she can live a life she wants. But her time is running out, where if she just dies in general the primordial flame will search for a successor to be reborn out of the flames anyway. At least in this way, Mavuika can pass that role of the phoenix onto someone else (Il capitano).

Adding to Your theory, I believe that there may be another option regarding Capitano fate after battle. He might get cursed/blessed somehow, and while his body, and flesh died and evaporated, his soul may get bound to his armour. And it is bound to it till this day. And as for him being told " are u brave enough to compete" If what I said is at least partly true, then he could ressurect, and bring back his actual body, and be free of armour, and if he fails, his soul would be burned just like his body was before, he would cease to exist, and his armour would just fell apart, without his soul keeping it together. So no matter the outcome capitano we see now, will change dramatically. And that would be his own desire, for Fatui he would just have to get Gnosis, like other harbringers

I think that there is a chance that the Captain was resurrected by Pierro. If a warrior as strong as the Captain would be willing to take orders from Pierro, there must be a reason. And I think I get it, and it may be a significant part of the whole Genshin storyline. Pierro may be one of the 4 Sinners of Khaenri'ah, possibly the Wise, and he may have the power to create and resurrect. And so, after the battle between the Pyro Archon and The Captain, Pierro "resurrected" the Captain using power from beyond this world.

I didn't even think of Primordial Flame being used to burn Irminsul. I was thinking earlier we're halfway through the Teyvat story come Natlan so we're due for the catalyst to take us to rhe climax. since Natlan is the last gnosis, and Traveler is weak af as shown after Arlecchino, the new war hinted at in Itto event and HP waking up has to start in Natlan. Makes more sense to seek out Tsaritsa when they've achieved their end goal instead of trying to figure out the meaning of the world while she's making final preparations.

Cool theory but it’s most likely incorrect due to the fact that capitanos choice of weapon is a sword another thing it’s stated that xbalanque killed the fire lord to become the first pyro archon and xbalanque is respected by many and was seen as a hero after defeating the fire lord the people wouldn’t just band together and kill him

I was thinking earlier we're halfway through the Teyvat story come Natlan so we're due for the catalyst to take us to rhe climax. since Natlan is the last gnosis, and Traveler is weak af as shown after Arlecchino, the new war hinted at in Itto event and HP waking up has to start in Natlan. Makes more sense to seek out Tsaritsa when they've achieved their end goal instead of trying to figure out the meaning of the world while she's making final preparations.

Nah, It's only a "GOD" Not an "ARCHON". Yeah, I'm not suppressed if Il Capitano confirmed could beat a God on further story. However, There's a big different between God and Archon in Genshin. However, I still believe that if He was face against Zhongli/Morax or Raiden Ei he'd messed up.
