- Japan's economic boom in the late 1980's led to the building of structures that were swiftly abandoned and forgotten when it came crashing down in the 90's. Today we explore a building who's purpose remains a mystery.

LETS GO, Chris! 😤
Chris, after that try sumo wrestling, could be a super funny video
Hello chris, I did some research and found a Japanese blog explaining that this is a bussharitou (a pagoda to represent the remains of Buddha). The big Buddha you found used to be housed inside the box at the top of the pagoda. I found a drone video of the structure that does indeed show there is / was a seat in the box. Apparently people used to be able to see the Buddha sparkling from the town. The blog I read also said they spoke with the granddaughter of the person who constructed it… it was in fact privately constructed by an ordinary old man with private funds about 20 years ago, but during construction he passed away. His family were unable to maintain or carry on the construction.
Thank you for your research!
damn dude thats awesome researching fbi work thanks so much for sharing!!!
There is a popular one in Sapporo called the Sapporo Peace Pagoda that has almost the same design.
Thank you for researching and sharing!!
Wow that’s actually really sad that he died before finishing it and that it went to ruins, I’m glad Chris was able to go and appreciate it tho
I can't believe you got Abroad in Japan to be featured on your channel. Chris is really moving up in the world.
I understand why he does that but it still makes me chuckle.
They’re dating…
I was gonna mention this in comments too xD
@@rasheednesbitt8667Chris is dating Ironmouse? Holy crap
@@ThePatxiao Yes, Chris Abroad is dating Chris Broad aka Iron Mouse.
Very humble of Chris to be featuring smaller creators like Abroad in Japan on his channel. Class act, this one.
Super cool to see Chris and Abroad In Japan together! Great collab!
This dude is uploading hours before his fight. What a Chad move.
He's in his AlphaGrindset arch I believe.
Probably nervous and in need of distraction..
Like everyone would probably be...
Nevertheless... thanks Chris and good luck tonight 👍
I wouldn't want to fight a maniac who wanders into abandoned buildings during Christmas.
Maybe someone uploaded it for him

This is easily Chris' most ambitious feature yet, abroadinjapan, a true titan of the youtube sphere.
Can’t believe you got to collaborate with the one and only abroad in Japan, so cool!
Chris, I think the four square blocks on top of the ring were supposed to be shrines to Buddha, with four statues intended - one in each one. I'd guess the bottom inner chamber was something like a garden of peace. I really think the Buddha statue being there is no coincidence. It also looks like the ledge to get up onto into the square block is too high for anyone to actually walk onto, supporting the idea that it was not meant to be accessed but rather hold a grand structure or statue, and to be gazed upon from a distance.
Agreed!
Yeah. Toward the end you can see a gilded gold or maybe bronze pedestal in one of the blocks. Each has a doorway so it’s possible they intended access (someone has to clean the statues, after all).
I think you got it right. It was obviously going to be a Buddhist shrine and that golden Buddha was to be placed in the alcove shown at 7:54. If Chris is right about the age, and I think he's not too far off, it would be the case that someone or a group, with cash to burn, started to build this shrine at some point in the 80s and then the money ran out during the economic down turn that occurred in the mid 90s that Japan has never recovered from. During construction only one of the statues ever got delivered. It's a little sad to see someone's vision left unfinished and abandoned like that.
Googling 岩波 廃墟, i.e. Iwanami Kaikyo (Iwanami being the name of the municipality), gives you a website where someone calls it the Nishizao Buddhist Stupa. Nishizao being a camping ground/park only 200m away. Perhaps they're both part of a big development project that ran out of money.
@@nkdevde Using google translate: The property is managed, and unauthorized entry, vandalism, vandalism, removal of goods, etc. are prohibited by law. Chris the lawbreaker.
This abandoned structure is called a stupa and although traditionally built out of stone; it is thought to have been built out of ferro-concrete to save money. The golden buddha you found is meant to be housed in one of the upper levels. (perhaps on the empty plinth at 7:56) Oh and that red outbuilding could of been a storage shed for construction materials.
Stupa - A circular structure usually containing relics (would explain the statue) and used as a place to meditate
Another video of the site by an urban explorer that visits various places in Japan: ruclips.net/video/QN7vBoQk_2A/видео.html
Yep, I recall seeing these some structures in my world history class. Apparently, they would sometimes have a holy relic interned inside the dome and worshipers would pray by walking around the circumference.
I believe this is the _correct_ answer...
...but a failed prison for an unspeakable horror is the more _exciting_ answer, so I'm gonna go with that ;-)
That's so creepy that someone is still making offerings to the Buddha over the years! I guess it's not completely abandoned
@@nik257 I imagine that over the years any native passing by would see the Buddha and toss in a couple coins at least as an offering to ward off any curses or bad omens that would come from disturbing such a creepy ass place lol
You can see in the shed there was scaffolding similar to the one in the center of the structure
I'd love to see more Japanese food videos... in creepy abandoned areas. A picnic perhaps?
This is exactly why I adore exploring abandoned places - the thrill and beauty completely overshadows any possible fear :3
If I had to take a guess, considering the massive buddha statue, I feel like that was supposed to be some form of temple. I've seen a number of brutalist (100% made of concrete) buildings for churches or for temples in a number of different countries. That's the best guess I have.
As to why they didn't finish it, it could be one or a number of factors:
- They simply ran out of funding
- There was a conflict in the planning or construction; with the client, the construction company, the government, or the local town's zoning bylaws, etc.
- They had supply issues. That's a considerable amount of concrete they used, I imagine that didn't come cheap or easy to transfer depending on where you can get concrete in Japan.
- Workers strike
- Politics or red tape
They didn´t ran out of funding, plenty of money at the feet at the Buddha....or at least to lift the roof up
At one point you can see a golden platform in one of the arches at the top that looks to be about the right size for the buddha statue
Yeah it's an unfinished Buddhist stupa or pagoda.
or the person passed away and the workers stopped the construction. just a possibility
I googled it in Japanese. It seems that you are right. An elderly man paid to build it decades ago to pray for world peace, to thank Japanese people who contributed a lot to the rapid development of the country after world war two, and so on. However, he passed away before it was finished. And no one continued to fund the project so it stopped. Yet, it's written this is not an abandoned building because some unknown organization or people somehow manage it like cutting the grass.
Three things give it away. The Budah statue, the circular shape, and the top archway with the center one have that slight curve upwards right at the top. It was going to be a giant Buhdist stupa in the style of the ones you find in northern India and southeast-asia.
Spot-on!
@@Jim58223 No, nope, definitely a stupa.
Yup, the ring like outer passage, where the statue and the chair was, is a classic stupa feature.
Aren’t Stupas burial mounds, though?
@@jpbaley2016 Who says no one is buried there?
Do more of a haunting kind of series. That would be interesting
Id like to see more abandoned things. I would be great if you did an overnight video there too. Im sure Sharla would be down to investigate some spooky places
Chris, please get yourself a nice set of boots and gloves so you don't have to worry about nails, etc. I see too many youtubers go to abandoned places without being prepared for it. Also worth looking into is an air quality meter for when you're in buildings that aren't as open as this one. Beats breathing in a bunch of asbestos or a pocket of gas that's built up.
Agreed 💀 but as he's also hiking in sneakers, what's the chance he's gonna gear up...
Reminds me of the archaeologists who went into Tutanchamun's grave and all died from breathing in mould spores.
Goggles too!
It’s stuff like this that really attracts me to Japan man, sure there’s weird abandoned places in many other countries too but seeing such places being documented by Chris is quite thrilling and makes me wanna visit the country even more
My guess: art museum built by rich eccentric collector who couldn’t afford to keep running the place after the economic bubble burst. We actually have a similar ‘museum’ in Mie Prefecture, where I live, that is (inexplicably) still in operation. Anyway, cool video Chris!!
Super refreshing to watch a video with just you! Great work
The real reason Chris went alone: Connor can’t make him do stuff he doesn’t want to 😂
Good luck tonight Chris, will be watching to support! Do not doubt your hard work when you’re in the ring 💪🏻
It's a getaway from that damn welshman!
Connor missed out on this one. It being the cleanest haikyo they've visited; no spider webs, rotten floor or ceiling that could cave in, exposed nails, etc.
My best guess would be that its a Buddhist Stupa that was left unfinished. Stupa's are typically like burial mound buildings containing holy relics. It does seem like it would have a second floor which I do not believe is typical of a stupa so maybe it had some observatorium functions. Either way clearly someone wanted a holy site to a sake buddha and ran out of funding. Can't wait to see more Haikyo, these are always so interesting.
is more a shrine for me. it's more different from south eastern Asia Buddhism temple.
yes most likely they out for funding to finish the project.
I love the whole aesthetic of this place and video! It's haunting yet beautiful. Nice drone shots!
Awesome video mate!
There are moments in this video I legitimately was concerned about what was around the corner!
I love seeing these little oddities that can be found all over Japan.
Keep up the great work.
I have to say, considering how clean and well kept the Buddha looks, the alcohol and donations, the single chair and musky makeshift bed, it looks to me like it may be someone's temporary home, regardless of the buildings original intention.
Good luck on your fight today Chris! I'll be watching and cheering on from the UK, from the safety of my bed.
People are visiting the Budda Shrine and leaving donations.
Building is unfinished, but people still use it.
I think he found Denji's Shed!
I doubt that someone is actually drinking that alcohol. Those liquor bottles left next to the Buddha are a gift. Japanese often leave liquor and food at graves and effigies.
Pete's new apartment looks interesting 🤔
In all seriousness, looks scary and well done for making it out alive 👏
Excellent video Chris!
Do more of these if you can please. I always like exploration of abandoned places.
Seeing as you're solo I have to say: your camerawork is amazing! The different angles you must have taken, the drone shots, and then the masterwork stitching you made to edit it all together in order to spare us a single continuous shot of your face haha!
Loved this video, really fun to see another side of exploring Japan!
I'd love to see you explore more abandoned places in Japan. Very interesting to see what nature does to man made structures like these!
I like all your videos, it's neat that you have a variety of videos, from these abandoned building explorations to just exploring and talking about japans culture
Based on the super weird structure and the fact that it's so isolated, I feel like it could've been an observatory that was scrapped and abandoned during construction
I would love to see more rural exploration, abandoned places included. Great video, Chris! Thanks for sharing!
would love to see more videos of Chris exploring more places like this. You can really see the passion and intrigue when he goes and its also interesting to see the variety of buildings that came and went during the japan bubble economy.
Keep it up Mr Affable! 👏👍
I love urban exploration videos and your usual stuff. So this is like a fusion of one of my favourite things to watch, along with my favourite youtuber. Keep it up man.
Yes more abondonrd places please!! Loving the videos Chris!!
If anyone is wondering what that giant building is @ 0:02 it's called the Sky Tower 41 in Yamagata Prefecture, which is the tallest building in Yamagata. Normally zoning retrictions in Japan prevent buildings like this from being constructed in certain areas, but this building was exempt because the developer was related to the Governor of Yamagata at the time.
This was intense, you really should do more of these! But maybe longer, since I can't get enough of you lol Much love mate!
This is pretty cool. Its my favorite type of content abandoned places especially in Japan. I would like more content like this. Just be safe exploring!🫡
I would absolutely love to see more Haikyo videos! I enjoy enjoy them all so much.
I'm already subscribed to your other channel, but I will do this one as well to support the investigation of old ruins.
Yasssssss! More abandoned videos! Seriously, WTF is up with that building. Also, love the abandoned videos for the same reason you do. I love to see more. Of course I enjoy all your content but having a fully fledged abandoned series by you would be amazing! Anyway, hope all is well!
I really like these explorations of abandoned structures. I may not get to visit Japan so your videos really help!
Loved the video. It felt a bit calm and chill amd I liked that.
Please do explore more! I'd love to do that myself if I do go to Japan at some point!
Parroting what others have already mentioned, it's most probably an unfinished stupa. The inner structure makes me even sure that it was supposed to be a stupa. While I don't know why it was abandoned, I would guess due to religious reasons and out of respect, they decided to not completely abandon it and keep the Buddha statue there anyway.
While it is very creepy, the fact that the statue still has so many offerings makes it somewhat bittersweet and beautiful.
Good job getting @abroadinjapan on your video!
So glad you tweeted this release as RUclips didn't bother to send me the notification!
Will also be watching tonight, good luck.
I would love to see more of these! Even if they're short little trips, maybe a rewarding snack or meal after checking out places like this. Esp if you were able to find out some info, maybe recap the info at a restaurant or something? Either way digging it!
I never thought I would live to see the day 2 amazing talented RUclipsrs Chris Abroad and Abroad In Japan doing a collab video. I'm moved to tears.

I love exploring abandoned places!!! This site is a banger of a site that would be very fun to respectfully camp at with a group of friends. Well done sir!
I love that you @ yourself for that algorithm meta. Very nice
the thing i love about abandoned buildings is that it's never just the building with maybe some rubble and vegetation growing around it, there are so many objects which you would think were used by someone in the past and you wonder what couold've happened that led to those objects being left behind, you start thinking about the emotions of the people who, in that moment, had to leave them behind. Imagine finding an old teddy bear, all raggedy and shredded apart but it's there, probably when a sad little child lost it in the rush of having to go away, or kitchen appliances that supposedly someone was using at the time of leaving, or an old picture frame with the glass broken and the picture missing. It's like seeing a photograph of a moment of intense sadness, which you can fully explore.
Exploring abandoned places has become Chris' favorite pastime 😅
I do love the exploring videos, its great to see the places and hear the history (not in this case) of the places. Keep them coming, but do stay safe.
Yes definitely want to see more of this
Abandoned observatorium project, perhaps? Would somewhat explain the generally circular shape of the building and it being so stand-alone to avoid light pollution of nearby cities.
Wait, was there ever a video made of that abandonded village that Chris was talking about at 00:43 ?
I was wondering that too, maybe it just hasn't been released yet
I appreciate the atmospheric sounds that accompany the video, especially moments when there were none (deafening and held the suspense). While short - in comparison to Chris' usual works - I thought this is a show of the quality and thoughts put into making this video.
I love urben exploring so seeing you doing it and going to abandoned buildings like shiey and adventure buddy and all the youtubers I watch, is super cool! Thank you so much for this video!
One might say Chris has abandonment issues…kidding! Appreciate that Chris creates an interesting narrative just from wandering around a random concrete building.
I'd say this is an unfinished temple
I love love love these type of videos!! Keep up the good work :))
