NOTIFICATION SQUAD: Welcome to the 12 Days of Christmas! I look forward to taking you on a journey into my insanity. Let's go.
The SECOND video for 12 days of Christmas is now up on Abroad in Japan! ruclips.net/video/IPGLhCq2RNk/видео.html
Have a Happy Holiday's Chris.
Following the tradition set in Journey across Japan episode 12 will be released summer 2022
Oi Oi Oi, let thew journey begin
Yep 👍
Glorious
Releasing a video on 47 things to do in Japan after Japan just announced that they would not be allowing visitors to enter the country. We truly live in a society
Shot the day before the announcement. What a nightmare.
The timing could not have been better
@@ChrisAbroad Which explains why we had that grumpy old Chris dude at the beginning of the video 😉
@@ChrisAbroad we do a little trolling, it's called we do a little trolling.
To be fair even the government funded official Japanese Travel Agency is still making ads to come and travel to japan, which having them popping up on your sms can feel like a cruel joke when you've already been waiting for 21 months to return.
considering becoming an attraction just to make this video archaic

Perhaps a giant Dogen statue ?
Ok so Oita attraction = Dogen 🤣🤣🤣
id book the first flight to japan
already planning the unveiling ceremony. You think Suga would hold another sign?
Chris's recollection of various prefectures: This food was here, this food was here, I liked this food here, this place has amazing beef, this place has chicken wings, this place has ramen...
That's pretty much sightseeing in Japan tbh. Most people go somewhere and just talk about the food haha.
It did pretty much morph into "what to eat in each Prefecture" didn't it? LOL
He has integrated well
His belly is priority 😂
He's gone native.
No joke, this is really what most Japanese think first of if you ask them about a prefecture or city.
I wonder how many different hard drives these older clips were stored across… this series has already made December!

You can't travel, but at least you have a Custom Ramen shop at your disposal.
That doesn't serve Ramen.
Cup ramen 😋
Instant raman is servable
Well Chris does have his own sweetshop, which is probably where he is going to have dinner 😋🍭🍡
You are everywhere i go chef hahahahaha
Just saw the Crane Game video, Chris won a noodle maker machine.. where is it?!
Japan goes into lockdown, restricting any tourism... Chris Broad -- "Now is an excellent time for a what to do in Japan video."
In reply to him not being able to go home for Christmas -- literally done out of spite I think! :D
I think it´s more about proving he went to all 47 regions and that it´s not green screen fake sh*t or maybe Chris was just torturing us with all that great food and sceneries😏

@@tvm-manducktv8375 Idk if ur a bot or not, but that made me smile. Ducks are great. :3
They haven't allowed any tourism since this all started in spring 2020... doesn't matter if the omnicram variant popped up or not... tourist still could not get in...
"Why sit alone in a room, feeling bitter when I can share that resentment with the whole world" 👌
You can really tell what Chris cares about when he makes a list of things to do in Japan off the top of his head and it's almost all food.
He's gone native!
The Japanese are obsessed with food. (This is not a bad thing.)
There you go, he was able to finally shoot the "drunk man in dispair in a shady corner" scene he was always raving about :P
YES!!!
Watching this video is like a "greatest hits" of the Abroad in Japan channel. You've done so much in terms of bridging the gap for westerners to Japan, Japanese culture, and what in Japan is worth seeing outside of the standard Tokyo/Kyoto defaults. I hope you (and Japan) realize just how much you've contributed to spreading Japanese culture worldwide. Thank you for doing what you do.
I have come to realize that Chris´ entire stay in Japan has been "A Journey Across Japan" and it has been a joy to follow him along his travels for the last several years 💖
He really has. He found a good niche that no one knew about and has, in my opinion, one of the best RUclips channels based in all of Japan.

@@alaner1383 just watch the video its only 19 minutes....
@@kunaldahiya310 what, I have already watched it obviously. I saw your comment afterwards, but I must’ve missed that part.
Considering you basically didn't say anything about Yamanashi prefecture, let me add something to it.
The Shingen-ko festival is a yearly festival in which they celebrate one of the greatest Daimyo of Japan during the Sengoku Jidai: Takeda Shingen. It is also one of the largest samurai (reenactment) gatherings in Japan.
Awesome, thanks for sharing this!
noted, i'll tell you when i visit.
I agree. Yamanashi also has some nice onsen and is famous for grapes and peaches. I'm also partial to the sake breweries there like Tanizakura and Shichiken.
I haven't really seen much of the Shingen-ko matsuri but had the honour of taking part in the parade.
In recent years the city has also rebuilt quite a bit of the castle. Unfortunately nobody has any proof what the main tower looked like so there's still discussion how or if to rebuild it.
The Takeda shrine where the castle of the Takeda clan was is also pretty nice. They have theatre plays there.
And the Chuo Shinkansen Line/Museum!!! A must for HSR train fans.
Chris, write that down and please make a video about Samurai ❤
It's amazing that Chris and his gang brought the whole, if not, the not often seen or unseen Japan to his viewers. his filming and editing technique are also amazing!
Chris: "I'm going to tell you one thing to do in each of the 47 prefectures".
Also Chris: "Saitama, not a big fan of it....All the people in Trash Taste lived there until they moved to somewhere that was good".
So, according to Chris, the one thing to do in Saitama Prefecture is move to somewhere else.
One thing that comes to mind for what to do in Saitama: Visit Ryū-Q Kan
Sounds like my province
Kawagoe is on our list to visit.
@@callumdonington2227 Are you from New Brunswick by any chance 😂
@@Gillybelly13 Alberta actually
"Nicest memory this year" involves Ryotoro. Okay Chris, what did he do? Blink twice if you need help!
😂
Few additional recommendations (Aomori, Tochigi, Shimane):
2) Aomori also has the Nebuta festival in summer. If you haven't checked it out, you definitely should if it ever allows visitors again. It is also one of the most impressive festivals all over Japan.
I also found it relatable what you said about Yamagata pref to have a special place in your heart. For me it was Aomori, where I spent my first year in Japan. My very first stay was in Shimane tho, which is also why I can give a good recommendation for when you go there again (↓).
9) Tochigi's main city, Utsunomiya, is only famous for Gyoza, which will be disappointing once you eat them, but for people who are fans of bars, Utsunomiya apparantly is an infamous bar town with many more or less famous bartenders. The beef in Tochigi is also extremely delicious.
33) Shimane has one of the most important Shinto shrines in all of Japan, considered to be the oldest one. It is called Izumo Taisha and is probably Shimanes biggest tourist attraction. Foodwise it is also famous for soba and green tea, which is freshly produced there so it is very delicious. My husband and I actually plan to have our marriage ceremony at Izumo Taisha, because it is THE Shinto shrine for marriage. It was also the first Shinto shrine I ever visited when I was in Japan, I didn't understand at all the importance of it lol
My first stay in Japan was as a volunteer in Shimane as well, I came down here to recommend Izumo Taisha as well! I'm not sure if it's still operational these days, but near the shrine there's also a Japanese History museum that delves into Japanese creation mythology (Izanami/nagi, Susano'o, Orochi, etc) since legend has it that Izumo is where all of the gods of Japan originate from. Apparently all of the gods from throughout Japan gather in Izumo in October for some kind of summit.
@@EbbFlowe What year did you go?
If you stayed in Shimane we probably know a few of the same people :D
@@captainkacke1651 This was allll the way back in 2011, but you're right, Shimane is not exactly a huge place haha. I stayed in the city of Ohda for about 3 months doing volunteer work with an NPO primarily around the Iwami Ginzan/Mt. Sanbe area. There's absolutely no editing, but I have a bunch of random raw footage from that time on my RUclips channel if you're curious! You may see someone you know haha
@@EbbFlowe I went in 2014 and was at a different location than you :D I was in a tiny tiny town called Hirata for about two weeks, preparing for a Shinto festival that is only held every 30 years. After that I wanted to do a whole 1 year voluntary service and landed on the opposite land, Aomori😆
@@captainkacke1651 That sounds awesome! I had the pleasure of being part of the community for several "Oda Matsuris" during my short 3 months there (re: trophy foreigner XD). There was one time where they actually let me carry one of those 80+ pound, 15 foot tall "backpack shrines" for lack of a better term around the town for the parade. The older man I took the burden off of for a while even stopped by the place I was staying to give me 5000 yen as thanks for the help! Shimane people are seriously some of most unconditionally kind people I've ever met, and shockingly open despite having so relatively little interaction with foreigners that far into the inaka.
#24 Mie: As someone living near Matsusaka, I suppose I should be happy we got some attention. But Matsusaka beef? Well, sure it’s one of the top 3 ‘wagyu’ brands, and yes it’s pretty fantastic (if you have a gazillion yen to shell out)…but if you’re coming all the way to Mie, you really should pay a visit to Ise Jingu. (If you don’t know, it’s the most sacred Shinto shrine in Japan… and a really fun area to hang out as well!) Just my opinion.
But great video! 🍻
Visited Ise Shrine on my first visit to Japan many years ago. Those wagyu beef are expensive. Gyutan is more affordable.
I’m planning to visit Ise Jingu on a day trip from Nagoya
@@saborivaille1258 Nice!Coincidentally, I’m just at this moment working on a video on that topic. (Part 2 actually. The first part is already up on my channel, if you’re interested. 🍻)
So what you’re saying is… the next Journey Across Japan is “The Missed Prefectures”?
I live in Fukushima, and besides Kitakata ramen and Sazaedo temple I would recommend visiting Ouchi-juku (a village from the Edo period), Goshiki-numa (five lakes with five colors) and lake Inawashiro too. Minamiaizu is beautiful in the autumn, i would recommend going by train (which has kotatsu seats as well with heating). Beautiful prefecture and very much underrated!
The fact that Chris remembered all of those memories while glancing on those scratched location is just amazing. Great Job Chris and Keep it coming!
Chris looks the best he has in years in the intro. Keep up whatever you're doing, dude. It's working!
Yeah his skin looks so much smoother and healthier 😉
LOL. That face replacement was both brilliant and scary. Probably scary for Chris too.
You half expect Alex and his droogies to come along and take offense to Chris. I'd love to know what effects (physical or digital) was used.
Old Chris is a national treasure.
Looks like if Boris Johnson had a baby with Jeremy Clarkson.
Great Video!!!!!
Love it!!
Throwing it back to the Japan Guide days. Nostalgia man. You’ve come so far since I started watching you in 2017. It’s been a great journey. Cant wait to see how your content evolves even more moving forward into 2022 & beyond!!
I love how the quality of Chris´ video´s gets better and better over time. He implements everything he learns into his work. Now we are "blessed" with grumpy old Chris, as if one grumpy young Chris is not enough 😉
Posting a Japan travel guide now that the borders are closed is just torture Chris
It´s the loveable way of the British 😁
"nobody monkey" man natsuki is such a vibe.
Great idea 😁👍🏻
The true epitome of Chris’ set is seeing an aged up harry potter would-be cast passed out on a retro japanese side street
hmm only aged up by a couple months tho
I thought he looked more like a young Dumbledore 😉
I like your blue period pfp
The new studio is great and really gives atmosphere to the parts of the video set in it. I love how this video feels like a recap episode for the entire series until now (and remembering all the videos I've watched where the scenes come from) but it's more interesting and not as boring as actual recap episodes from tv series lol. Makes me excited for what the next year would give us.
Great new set!
Thanks!
I'm really sorry you can't go home this year Chris. The same thing happened to me last year when Boris locked down a few days before Christmas ruining the only thing I had been looking forward to all year as I was working so much (working through lockdowns) unable to take any time off. It was a punch in the gut and one of the worst feelings I have ever had.
I hope that you manage to have a good time this year and that this video series helps.
Sorry to hear that, I hope this year ends on a happier note for you!
I must say Chris, your edit skills have really improved over the years since the days of CG plane crashes. It must certainly be the case that you can make yourself look old through movie magic, and not that your incredible age is finally taking its toll and showing through in your recordings...
Chris did say he hired an editor (at last) in a recent podcast episode.
@@KinnyRiddle is that so? I must have missed that. Good on Chris for finally taking that step, I do recall him in previous videos talking about him fighting his "control freak" kind of urge. So this must be a good weight off his sholders.
@@KinnyRiddle But then he did say in a recent podcast that he'd been up all night editing another video, so maybe the control freak won in the end. Or the editor just fell through.
There is a video on YT titled "Easy Deepfake using Ebsynth & FaceApp" shows how they do it. a video with a much younger chris talking to a deathbed chris and asking for advice on how to live life would be a good laugh. i'm sure deathbed chris would be chocked full of bad advice
Great video !
Nice one!
Chris, are you nocturnal?? All your videos come out in the middle of the night - your night lol
Haha pretty much. Kill me.
Can't believe you didn't mention Lake Biwa for Shiga Prefecture, which you cycled past in season 1 of Journey Across Japan, where you encountered a mini-version of Itsukushima Shrine with the Torii in the water, which is just as impressive.
Either way, an impressive video where you flex your experience over all of us mortals as being one of the select few gaijin in having been to all 47 prefectures of Japan, something not even all Japanese have done.
Amazing trip Man !!!
Awesome video! Very informative!
Chris, I'm desperate to learn more about Japanese libraries and bookstores. If you could do a video about them, it'd make at least this youtube goblin happy!
Shimane Prefecture is definitely underrated! Every time I visit (usually on the Sunrise Izumo overnight train) I keep finding new places to visit. If you spend some time there, I absolutely recommend Gakuen-ji, a beautiful temple complex in the mountains behind Izumo City and the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, near Oda City.
YES Gakuenji is my favorite! Went there on the regular when I was living in Izumo! Would love to see some Shimane content on the channel
Bookmarked. Will visit Gakuenji when Japan opens up for int'l. tourists
Awesome video.
Awesome summary 😊👍
Chris, everytime I see your studio I must say that it's one of the coolest fu*king things I've seen. If I were you I'd just do exactly what you were doing in the intro, sit on the floor, drink and look at the walls
OMG the quality of your work is increasing exponentially!

Another awesome video Chris! This video felt like a 10-year flashback of all your adventures across Japan. I thought it was a nice nostalgia trip looking back at what you've achieved! 👏🏽🎉
I really hope to visit Japan one day (when we will be allowed to go again) and this video is a great way to get an idea of where to go without just going to the big tourist traps. I also love watching your other, equally inspiring videos. Thanks Chris!
Nice lighting 👍🏻
Love you Chris! You're awesome!
Sorry your trip got cancelled. Gotta love the timing of everything. So far December has been interesting. My dad was sick just after Thanksgiving and I thought it was the certain virus but actually it wasn't and I got that news yesterday. Just 2 days from now is my birthday so I'm pretty much getting my plans in order to have a fun day. :)
Nagoya is not boring, it is famous for its great food such as Misokatsu, Hitsumabushi, and kishimen.
Besides it is home to Atsuta jingo which is one of three major shrines of Japan.
You should make a video in Nagoya too!
seeing the new set in use, nice
Every video you make is a treat, keep up the good work!
This feels like an epic recap to my favourite television show at the start of a new episode/season. =)
Absolutely LOVED Nikko. Getting off at Tobu-Nikko station in the evening, the town was covered in lights and lanterns, the food was great, the town was surrounded by mountains, and everyone was so kind and friendly. The tourism bus was incredibly helpful. It runs every 20 mins and takes you to all the big sights, 3 buses total, all to different areas. I’m actually debating going back for another night on my trip
I like that channel, great stuff man thanks of keeping it straight forward content
Loved the video! Can't wait to see your visits to some of the prefectures!
I've lived in 3 prefectures, and have visited 42 out of the 47. My suggestions for the prefectures you've only driven through:
Saga - Karatsu
Shimane - Matsue and Izumo
Shiga - Hikone

Love the video Chris. Really cool to see a recap of so many other amazing videos you've done, while also being an interesting video itself!
That was an amazing opening!
Nice guide to Japan! Some of prefectures are not really introduced their best iconic places though.
Shimane is a sacred place. We are taught a multitude of gods assembles there every November.
Hey Chris, whenever you can do a video on the Saga Prefecture, on top of Tea, the prefecture has a cultishly famous drive-in Yakitori restaurant in Imari.
You might wanna lookout for zombies down there, though.
Zombies and cosplayers are everywhere.
The production value 👌
Love the use of the sett
I visited the city of Matsue in Shimane. It has a beautiful castle, one of the few originals still standing from the time it was first built. There is also the house that Lafcadio Hearn lived in, where I was able to observe the Monument to Hearn's Hairs - they found a few of his hairs and built a monument to it. I am serious.
Just what the docter ordered to cope with the current crazy times!!
you're amazing Chris
YESSS! I will go someday!!! thanks Chris
Really enjoyed this video. Felt like a review of all the adventures Chris has been on while learning a little something about each prefecture. Let's get a year end review next!
This opening is incredible. This is the good old funny Chris with so many good ideas for funny sketches and scenes. Why don't you do more of this. This opening should definitel..definetil.. defintily... F****, it should be featured on your main channel.
I am convinced you could write and shoot a short series similar to Midnight Diner in your set.
That’s kinda the whole point of having his new set, so he can do stuff like that.
I agree. I love the stuff where he's just being clever and funny in a room. The mascots video was also great. Not such a fan of the "documentary" stuff, though it's still good.
Agreed - made me laugh out loud while appreciating the thought process and creativity that went into it.
Man seeing all these clips from the past years is really one big nostalgia blast, love it
Have a safe flight trip Chris! ❤️❤️
We just decided not to go to see our family in Argentina. We haven’t seen them in 2 years. We didn’t go on vacation since we wanted to be considerate of the weakest in society. I hate our apartment by now.
WE FEEL YOU, CHRIS! Cheers!
And thank you for making your videos. I miss Japan terribly. But thanks to you at least I know it still truly exists. 🤣
Actually your opinion on Nagoya is far from controversial. I remember reading an article not that long ago about a poll showing that Japanese people themselves ranked Nagoya as the major city they'd like to visit the least as tourists in all of Japan, and something along the lines of tourism officials of the city being aware of the bland reputation of it and vowing to do more to make it more attractive.
We went to Nagoya bc of Legoland, which was a lot of fun. But we didn’t see anything else in the city, and I think that’s because when I tried looking it up, nothing was really coming up being worth it to see. In fact strangers on the Shinkansen were genuinely surprised when we said we were going to Nagoya.
I totally agree with you, as a Japanese.😅 But if you are a car enthusiast, the nearby Toyota factory is a good educational location to see the history of Toyota. Or, if you like history or fantasy stuff, Atsuta Shrine is one of the top shrines in Japan, which keeps the legendary Kusanagi sword in it. Or, if you want gourmet food, I recommend Hitsumabushi, a type of eel rice. I think that's all I can recommend!
We visited the Toyota Museum and Mei & Satsuki's house, and were grateful.
I equate Nagoya with misokatsu and Nana-chan.
I love Chris’s cinematic openings! His videos are so artfully done.
I enjoy your resentment. Merry Christmas, Cheer's!
I'm so sorry you can't go home Chris!! But hope you can do something fun for yourself in Japan over the holidays
Thanks for the bucket list for when I (eventually) return to Japan! I studied abroad in Nagoya and while I disagree with it, I can understand why it's boring city compared to places like Tokyo and Osaka. I still recommend people to give it a try. If you're gonna visit there only once I highly recommend Nagoya Castle, which in my opinion is the better looking castle in all of Japan.
I haven't seen much of Nagoya but I liked the Nagoya City Science Museum. Would be a great visit for kids as you can try various experiments yourself.
And at the time they had a special exhibition on how the old monster films were done, complete with a small city district as model scale that you could walk through and cameras would film the "giants" strolling through it.
When it cames to castles, my favourite one is Matsumoto. Inuyama and Matsumae are also pretty cool. Shikoku and Kyuushu have some pretty nice ones though like as mentioned Maruyama. I don't like the concrete replicas like Oosaka.
@@kaltaron1284 When I went to the science museum, they had an exhibition called "Sweets" where everything on display looked like it was made of candy and sweets.
Osaka Castle's not my favorite, but I liked that you could go inside and in it was a museum. It was cool to go to the top and get a view of the city.
@@fatalshot0093 That's also pretty cool.
Oosaka Castle looks pretty neat from the outside and museum inside is also pretty good but I prefer the historical castles.
IMHO the smaller ones like Inuyama, Hiroshima or Matsumae have a lot of charm.
Also Nagoya is a good place to go secondhand shopping. I was able to get a formal kimono (with a small stain) for 5,000 yen!
I love this video so much!! It's like the all-encompassing recap episode of everything Abroad in Japan, and an awesome reference list for visiting!!
that intro was amazing and i love the set
