Like us on Facebook @ / 2redline One of the very first production hard-top convertibles, the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class represents a vehicle that exudes class, prestige, and luxury. Buyers looking to make quite a statement should have this car at the top of their list. Be advised, for the money, some competitors do offers more "look-at-me" styling while some are far more entertaining to drive on curvy back-roads.
I have a 2009 SL550 tuxedo black with light beige interior and burl wood trim; 19" AMG 5 spoke rims. The car has 13k miles on it....yes 13k miles. The thing that people neglect on these cars mainly due to MB not having a maintenance schedule is the ABC(active body control) system. This "suspension" system runs on hydraulic fluid so no springs or sway bars or links. This hydraulic fluid must be flushed and filter(inside the hydraulic reservoir) changed every 40k miles at least!!! Most don't do it or don't know about it and this can become a costly(up to $5000) nightmare as the fluid gets old as well as the seals. Once particles gets in the lines, pumps of this very high pressure system it will start to fail or leak. Other than that, the ABC system is very reactive if properly maintained. There are youtube vids on how to flush this system for the DIY person; fairly easy.
joe r gonzales Still like the car? I have noticed that currently even low mileage cars are pretty affordable. Good to know about that the suspension system. Thanks.
Nice! I have an 07 SL550 in black and it's an incredible car! I have to agree with you about the ABC system. I've always changed the hydraulic fluid Between 30k to 40k miles and currently at 115k miles I've had zero issues with the system. In my opinion it's a very great fun car! Even tough mine is 12 years old It still gets plenty of compliments at the gas station.
yes, the ABC fluid must be properly flushed otherwise the repair bill is probably more expensive than the car itself. I had a W220 S600 with ABC, great engine but I had to sell it due to ABC issue.
Joe, thank you for this information. I bought a 2008 and I was very concerned about the abc system. Was not aware that oil needs to be changed every 40k.
@@vin8531 - You welcome.
Fyi, you can buy 20ltr's of Pentosin CHF 11-S from Amazon for under $210 which is $11 and change per ltr. The dealership here charges $28 per ltr. for the same fluid. Auto zone charges $25.
This is of course if you plan to DIY.
Big merc engines are just unbreakable. They keep going and going.......awesome!!!!!!!
I just bought mine today in silver. The gas mileage is horrible but let me tell you this bitch moves with a purpose!
Nice review. I'm researching the 500 and 550 SL. There is a lot to like about these cars and they're becoming affordable.
The SL500 had a 5.0 Liter V8 with three valves per cylinder and two spark per cylinder. The 550 engine is a 32-valve 4-cam V8 with one spark plug per cylinder. Weight almost the same but about 65 more horsepower and just tons of torque. The 500's mostly had a 5 speed automatic transmission where the 550's have a 7-speed auto trans. Quite a bit faster acceleration and almost the same gas mileage!!
Holy moly is this car still fresh today. If I could buy another sports car I think I'd go with this. It's almost like a cross between the 2000s Mustang and Corvette.
Good review..Im actually off to look at one today though this is 2020!! Hey its cheap but I hope that I will love the look and drive...
Did you like it?
I was rear ended by one of these beasts in 2007. It pushed the trunk of my Cavalier almost into my back seat. All that happened to the SL500 was that the fog lamp cover popped off.
This was like a street-legal tank.
love this car, i was fortunate enough to drive it once...the 60-100 mph is when you really feel the torque!!!
How is the reliability and owners cost on these cars ???
They CAN be great vehicles. Make sure that you get a Carfax, pre purchase inspection from Mercedes and service records.
Sounds like it has ABC suspension, so I wouldn't trust it.
just look at the depreciation value on all mercedes not jut the SL however the SL is a piece of cake
mercedes sucks. once the warranty period expires YOU ARE FUCKED
parts are expensive there is always shortage of mechanics who know about german cars there is always something
DO NOT BUY
horrible investment
How much is a used one of these?
This car looks so much better than the new one.
Apologize for the wait, video uploads will resume later this week :)
🤣Sofyan was freaking young back then!
Wasn’t updated from 2003-2012 but when the 4 runner isn’t updated the masses say Toyota is lazy 🤔
Missed the strongest zone for the SL: continent crossing on the interstates alfresco. The SL just inhales miles at 700 a day. And that ABC suspension is hydraulic, not an Air-Matic: no springs or sway bars whatsoever.
I had a 600 and 500. Great cars, loved them.
Armen Arakelian same - different gravy
My grandpa has an 03 SL55 AMG and man WHAT A CAR! However it only has 14,xxx miles on it and it has a lot of little gremlins which is disappointing. Roof only goes down when it feels like it and the check engine light stumps the Mercedes technicians all the time. The car drives amazing when it works though lol
It was supposed to raise the top up so you could access that area for cargo, but for some reason, it didn't work :/
I've got an 08 and my engine doesn't sound anything like this one. What aftermarket exhaust do you have on this?
He said fricking like 10 times LOL.
My just got my 07 sl 550 Mercedes out storage dashboard inconvenience not available can't lock vehicle
Awesome Review Of 2007 Mercedes-Benz SL550. 😀
Is it not the other way round? The americans copied the sporty looks, huge horsepower and torque from the europeans.
I've owned 2 SL R230's in the past 7 years, including the car in the review. The review is OK, although not from the perspective of someone who's owned one, but the one thing it got dead wrong is the commend about poor rear view visibility.
The reason for that comment is because the roll bar was up. Under normal driving conditions, and especially with the top up, the roll bar should be down. With the roll bar down, the rear view visibility is excellent, and with the top down, it's unmatched.
FWIW, the roll bar is automatic. in case of a crash or roll, the sensors will instantly deploy it, making manual deployment superfluous (unless of course you like that look; top down/roll bar up).
My exact thoughts when he said that
Do the SL's tend to need a lot of maintenance? Thinking of buying one for my next vehicle
Jesus Veronica routine maintenance is every 6 months like most cars. But you could get hit with an expensive repair here and there. It’s the cost of admission to the club but worth it for those 7:00 am 80 mph drives with the top down on a sunny and cool spring day 😊 (why else would anyone get up at 7:00 a.m.??)
The convertible top must be a NIGHTMARE to fix.
Chris Capaccio $5,000!!!!
No, when it works and stable.... no problems.. the board computer signals any impediments in advance!
See and Enjoy the SL500... it is the best toys for the boys!
i agree they are horrible
money pit
Good job on the intro!:DD
All that "frickin'" sounds unprofessional dude
Mike shut yo frickin ass up
This one sold for about $37,000
It's a SL, it's not supposed to work.
I'm lucky enough to drive these everyday (at work lol). You should see the interior on the 2013's it's way better.
How reliable is it? How’s it holding up? I’m interested in an 03 sl500
It is interesting how different two car review RUclips channels can be. If motortrend reviewed an 2007 mercedes, I would have been pissed, but if 2theredline does it, I'm excited.
price can get nuts for this car ive seen a anniversary edition sl65 amg for almost 250,000
I have seen a couple from $35,000 to $45,000
These SL’s are basically German corvettes
There is a bottum right below the ABC. What is that for?
Kinda annoys me when he says leather stitching. It's leather wrapped with exposed stitching.
There are 4 windows, not just 2 (4:30). Steering is not light; it's heavy (10:05); compare it to any 20 cars and you will see. Not a bad review, except for your unfortunate vocabulary which is too dependent on 'actually', a word which added no meaning any of the dozens of times you used it, and vulgarities such as"frickin", which detract from your presentation. You're a bright guy and can do better, but first you must want to.
Lol he said frikin
Now in 2021 it can be had under $10k for a shiny example with a mile over 100k miles on used car dealerships across the country. It’s garbage, don’t argue, it’s garbage.
I believe the cupholders is important only in Usa/Canada :)
The ABC button is for active body control; Mercedes' active suspension. The car has an excellent turning radius. 0-60 mph is 4.9 seconds; see Motor Trend www.motortrend.com/cars/mercedes-benz/sl-class/2007/
"This screen would've been better as a touch screen"... It's a car from 2007 and touch screens only came into popularity in 2008 when the first smart phone came out.
This was when Sofyan had hair and going through puberty. Certainly one of REDLINE classic reviews. 👌
The 2007/8 of this engine has been reporting many problem than fixed with 2009 version.
get rid of the Mercedes brake pads and switch to akebono brake pads. And 90% less brake dust!no squishy breaks then
Reviewers all of the time talk about soft touch materials on the dashboard but who actually touches their dashboard on a regular basis??🤔🤔
stupid music!!!
This guy should talk less and drive more. First rule of a good test drive. No talking. Just driving and feeling.
That interior from 2007 still looks fresh in today's era of interiors tbh. It looks very nice and great looking vehicle overall~
Uhhh Audi and Mercedes Benz offer complementary service for the first 5 years/50k and 4 years 80k respectively just like BMW does. Don't think it's free, you do pay for it in the price somewhere whether you lease or purchase a new car and the dealerships will make sure of that. No modern German car has stellar reliability, the only general rule is that the simpler ones give less problems due to less technology and over-engineering. Only German car I'd own is a MBZ C300.
Salla Allahou Allayhi wa sallem Salla Allahou Allayhi wa sallem Salla Allahou Allayhi wa sallem Salla Allahou Allayhi wa sallem
Will be buying this as a fun weekend car. Just like my 99 LS400.
More signs of Mercedes build quality!!! - Clarkson
Use "Frigin" more in a sentence.
And heavy ass more too. Lol
Love Your Vids Keep Up The Good Work
I think the SLR McLaren was the first car to use brake-by-wire technology. I remember top gear saying something like that. Also, there's NO way their gonna put tech from a 100k car into a $200k+ car lol
The focus while a is no where near it's great don't get me wrong I love it but you can't say it's better then this hard top convertible fast luxury and prestige you can pull up to expensive restaurants and look like a boss and get up the next day to drive it to work
Pos
This was one of my favourite cars on gran turismo 4 :)
this car would look even better with the 5 spoke amg wheels & performance tires^^^^
Good job as always, keep up the good work
You said frickin like 100 times
I believe that if he used a mike near his mouth, it would work, but perhaps not an open mike in a situation like this, the fast lane car recently did some high speed track videos with the windows open and you could barely hear the driver speak.
XLR and XLR-V was also a competitor.
I bet you want to take this home to make company to your SL huh? :) great review!
Try pulling up in front of Providence or even fairmont hotel in a Focus, and see how many valets and customers will laugh at you.
A top class car like this is not noisy even with the top down, unless you're doing 70 on the highway, this is a Mercedes, after all!
Turn the volume down if you have headphones in for the intro. I think I'm fucking deaf now.
nice vid! but, correction: 4 separate windows! know u r talking about.
also, ABC suspension: is hydraulic controlled! not air controlled. Latter is called: AIRMATIC
Redline Reviewer is incorrect. There are four side windows in this model, not just two.
Agreed! he did not know that the two switches control four windows by pressing them differently.
I bought a 2007 SL 550 with 48k miles three years ago and use it as a daily driver. It now has 80k on its odometer. It is an absolute pleasure to drive. Solid and heavy but with power to effortlessly move that weight. No mechanical issues to date. I prefer the rounded nose compared to the square version introduced in 2008. Yes the GPS screen looks like an Etch-a-Sketch but I use my smart phone instead. Mileage is poor but to be expected due to the weight and the big 380 hp V8.
Review is accurate and informative. Suggestion to the reviewer: I know you are young but you will have much more credibility if you drop the word 'fricken' from your on-camera vocabulary, and lose that rubber rainbow bracelet, especially if you continue to review luxury cars of this caliber.
Great review
You do realize that the Focus is a Euro car right??? Lmfao!
Do the sl 65
Awesome review Sofyan. It's very interesting & outstanding that the SL550 has two completely different feels (in regards to the transmission shifts & driving experience) when you had activated the cars ABC Sport mode at 10:20. Have a great & safe 4th Of July.
- Michael Land
I like how you used very casual language. You werent cookie cutter with iy
how can you not drive it with the top down, so what if it's 98 degrees?
It has 4 side windows
cool ride to breezy through the wind
That's exactly what I thought that button was for too.
- Michael Land
I love all your reviews, even when it's out of reach price wise. I think you were either excited by the car (hence the frick'ns) or you were having a bad day with the studdering. Not your best, but I am a big fan anyway - you do your thing quite well.
Found this from NFS: MW
What was the button at the end suppose to do?
Good video...and really nice car.
Stellar review as always man...great job. I don't see much value though here but on the used market not shabby.
bmw z8? more like a 650!
Want one as a daily driver
I actually drove an '04 SL500 yesterday! Sweet!
I totally agree with that statement :)
- Michael Land
Agreed, it was quite annoying as well.
great job on the reviews sofyan, i really look forward to your merc, audi, and bmw reviews
That was beautiful
Agreed!
SL600 is V12 bi-turbo, not V8
Boadicea, I believe he correctly said SL 600 is a V-12 (2:26).
What was this traded in for?
What's up with the language?
It's supposed to encourage the young and preppy crowd, ha.
No AMG kit though.
Dream car
Very cheap.
