- **Note** Be careful hooking up power and ground to the heater circuit of newer air fuel ratio sensors, some new ones can not take a solid power and ground, they are pulse width driven by the PCM ONLY***
Oxygen sensor heater circuit codes are a common occurrence on many vehicles. In this video we show you how to quickly and efficiently diagnose a heater circuit fault code. We also share some tips and tricks to replace an oxygen sensor.

Best video of the day! Thanks for the O2 sensor link. I can't understand why some fuel pump manufacturers do not show proper fuel pump pressure on their website - very annoying. I mean they build new fuel pumps and don't know fuel pressure of car, makes no sense. Wells has best free info!

Mike I think you're doing a very good job teaching everyone and I love watching your videos, but remember, many are very very very novice at this type of thing. This means that you must explain every step in detail so that they get full understanding with very little or no doubt about what you just explained. Go back to when you were just a novice (I use to) and think about it. Remember it's only one way communication when learning from the videos; no questions can we ask. Amazing,thank you very much for taking the time,very easy to understand.
When you were doing the resistance check on the new oxygen sensor and you said it was 2.5 or 2.6 we couldn't see the meter because your head was in the way. We seen the entire process for the bad sensor but not for the good sensor. Other than that it was a really good presentation and informative episode.
You know you guys would make so much more money if you let people toss parts and didn't teach them to test lol. Just kidding another great episode and have come to anticipate watching these. You do an excellent job and you have become way more comfortable in front of the camera. I remember the first video I seen you in and you have got this to being one of the best sources for information and we truly appreciate everything all of you have done over the years and a big thanks to wells for providing this to us for no cost. Great Job as always Mike.

If you don't have a thermal imager I heard you can lick the end and if it's cold & tastes sweet not only is your heater not working but you may have a bad head gasket :D Great video Mike!

Great explanation of the diagnostic for an oxygen sensor!, The other 2 wires for signal,one is 12 v and the other one ground? Or how do they work? I heard one is high the other one low.

Hey JG Garcia, thanks for watching! There are 2 heater circuit wires, one signal wire (0-1 volt) and a ground wire. The signal wire is the voltage that the sensor is creating.

Thanks for the vid! I just checked my o2 sensor heater, and, it has nothing to show on the ohm meter, and so I will be replacing it. No wonder I keep getting a pesky check engine light..haha but the real funny thing is, the CEL only shows up when the engine is left at idle for about 10-20 mins, but yet the CEL never comes on if I just run the rpm's up, or go driving down the road without letting the engine sit running at idle for warm up time. Does this mean that my vehicle has more than hot enough exhaust so that it doesn't need the o2 heater when the engine is running at mid to high rpm? BTW my vehicle only has one o2 sensor, and the computer system is a 1990's OBD1 jeep/chrysler type.
nice video Mike, question, on a Range Rover ---- HOW LONG --- does the ECM is pulsating to ground, the 02 heater,??? is it only to heat up the element ,,,? or all the time the engine is running??

2000 Lexus gs300. Code po125. Heard it’s usually a sensor issue. Code only triggers when I’m driving.
While heated up to temp 190°f at idle what should my voltages be for all my sensors ? I noticed my graphs for B1s1 is oscillating, voltage .08-.9v.
B2s1 is pretty flat lined at .010 and will oscillate a bit but not much when I’m slowing down or speeding up from a stop.
I rev up to 4k and b2s1 doesn’t move much but b1s1 does.
So is it normal to flatline or is it supposed to be oscillating heavily?

Thanks J Georges! This test should take care of just about any heater circuit that is directly power fed and PCM ground side controlled. I never want to say "all" because there may be some oddball thing out there that this doesn't apply to.

Thanks Paul! Everything is built on the basics right? It's the foundation to the house of diagnostic knowledge :) So, here is my $.02 on the migration...cost and GOOD competition. The NON snappy scanners of the world have come a LONG way from where they used to be. Launch and Autel are both making great products at a FRACTION of the price...I've heard almost 15 grand for the new Zeus...who wants to pay that for an aftermarket scan tool that can do roughly the same stuff as a 3-4000 dollar one!

I put the key ignition on and tested voltage at o2 sensor heater wires coming from the pcm and it was delivering 9.5 volts. Shouldn't be 12v? What does that means if is less then 12 volts

Hello. Will a heater circuit malfunction in bank 1 sensor 2 affect fuel economy?
Hey Littlebear gaming, depends on the strategy of the vehicle. Typically sensor 2 is used to monitor the catalytic convertor. If the vehicle is stuck in open loop because of this failure I would say yes, fuel economy could be affected.

c reader scanner reads time transition fail on my 2004 passat 2.8l this pertains to oxygen sensors and it has multiple misfires code which is po300 replaced upstream O2 sensor but no luck. please help I thank you
So does the heater act as a glow plug when I turn my key to the ready to start position without engaging the starter ? Or does the engine need to be running for heater to be activated
Hey Tphelan86, thanks for watching! The heater is usually only active when the vehicle is turned on. I have yet to see one pre-heat at key on.

Hey Kevin, there's quite a few things. It's not really "uncommon" for a heater circuit to fail. Age and vibration are the 2 major factors for heater failure.

Hey Mike i tested the resistance of the O2 sensor on my 02 subaru, and got a reading of 0.01.
troubleshoot and diagnostic manual said reading should be under 10. Was wondering if 0.01 too low?
Hey Hlau Thoj, I assume you're testing the heater circuit, right? 0.01 sounds like an odd reading. I would expect something in the 1-3 ohm range at least.

Hey R Mil, that depends on the type of sensor. Newer sensors, probably. Older ones used to run 100% duty cycle during warmup.

Sometimes the only place you can find that info is in the factory service manual right from Jag.

I just replaced one A/F sensor on an 01 camry. The two heaters wires are black,but your are both white,is it because of the different model ?

At minute 8, how did you know that pins 3 and 4 (A2A+ and A2A-) were the signal wires? And pins 1 and 2 (HA2A AND +B) were the heater circuit wires? I never heard you explain.
Usually on an O2 sensor you'll find the heater wires are the same color. A wiring diagram would help here if there was any question on which wire was which.

#1 Is it safe to use a test light to confirm circuit integrity and PCM operation (pwm ground) for ALL vehicles.#2 Will all computers protect themselves as this one did when it detected something was not quite right?
Hey Michael, depends on the circuit. This circuit runs a heater element. That heater element draws way more amperage than the test light...so yes, it will be just fine. You don't want to load a signal circuit.

Mike these tests are very useful, but if you don't have a scanner, how can you reset the codes and check if the computer is protecting itself?
Hmmm, well, you could disconnect the battery, though I'm not one to recommend it on newer cars...so many relearns....My answer is buy yourself ANYTHING that can clear the code. You can get something for well under a hundred bucks that can clear codes. I guess my thought is that if you can read the code, in theory you should be able to clear it. Though I know that's not always true...parts stores....There really is no easy answer here besides the fact that if you want to work on any modern vehicle, you need at least a basic scan tool!

actually i tested the o2 sensor 2 white wires for the heater put meter to ohms resistance i got nothing and then i tested both upstream and downstream with scantool up was a rich lean condition but downstream was like flatline no reading sounds like im changing sensor or sensors i drive a 98 volvo v70 base model 210k
Yeh, if the heaters are open circuit it's probably time for a new sensor.

thanks go tech if you find wiring diagram for 98 volvo v70 non turbo the wires on the engine side the 4 colors are brown green/white stripe green/ black stripe and green/orange stripe im thinking brown is the signal wire and the green/white stripe is ground these are the 2 i want to test with a test light to make sure i have power and ground fromthe pcm correct
Hey Kevin, judging from your wire colors, your working with the rear 02 sensor...right? I show green-orange as power to the heater and green-black as the ECM controlled ground.

Hey Robin, yes, you can use your battery. Just be very careful. Also, don't do it on newer style sensors, they should only be pulsed and not constantly powered.

Hey Kevin, slow response can be a sensor issue or an air/fuel issue. Can you force the sensor to go rich/lean by creating a vacuum leak or introducing propane?

Hey Kevin, you would want to check for power coming to the heater on one side. The other side is ground side controlled by the PCM. A test light can be used to check this. You can take the lead of the test light onto the power side going to the sensor and the tip of the test light into the ground side. You are swapping the 02 heater for the test light bulb. If the bulb lights/flashes, the PCM is doing it's job.

Hey Rick, only the heater circuit should be powered. Not the signal circuit. Many times there is a fuse powering the heater power circuit. The ground side is usually controlled by the PCM. I hope you didn't fry the controller in the PCM!!!

Hey Audi4ever, a traditional oxygen sensor heater will turn off. An air/fuel ratio sensor will keep the heater on at all times. The temp required for an air/fuel ratio sensor is much higher than exhaust gas temp.

Hey StayClassy, on which wire are you seeing that voltage? One wire should be 12v one ground, the other is low ref and the other is signal out from the sensor.

@@GoTechTraining its showing me that on my OBD scanner, I haven't used a DMM on the actual wires yet. Should I test the wires with a DMM? My vehicle is a 06 range rover hse 4.4l. I didn't disconnect the battery before installing the sensors.
I wonder why their is no resistance range, resistance normally increases w/ temperature. At least room temp and operating temp would be nice.
What color is the ground wire ?
Ground for what? The heater control? Or are you talking signal return? There is no true ground. It's a PWM signal from the PCM. That is a green wire. The B-W and blue wires are AF- and AF+. The black wire is power. Hope that helps!

Hey, the ground wire for the heater runs back to the PCM. It's PCM controlled and is pulsed. It's not just a solid ground.

@@GoTechTraining P1157 A/F sensor voltage high my scanner read 0 volts in the A/F sensor I test resistance 2.6 at fuel trims there is not reading nothing is move but the car still running normal I just have the check engine light on I do have VSA light on too!
Sounds like the car is running in open loop at this point because it has failed the test for the sensor. Sensor voltage being high is very different that a heater circuit issue. You're looking at a signal problem, could be just a bad sensor.

I don't know how to spell things in German, just that the fastidious people have good torq. That is,if my native Italian specs aren't handy. However, if you'd like me to try Ugga dugga's, I can't promise your head gasket won't be flapping like a reed on a wind instrument.

Head in the shot to cover OHM reading of new sensor. Wellsve is only for us market. Proved by entering Golf MK5 2.0 fsi 2006 and nothing. Then Honda 2009 and no model FRV, just CRF which after scrolling down through fault codes to verify, it had no P2004 code listed. Subsequently I have come to realise that should a code state low circuit, this tends to point towards wiring issues more. In this video you say that you would still like and suggest for us to test the other stuff, but when you know the heater circuit has ridiculously high ohms; why bother. Just wasting time. The heater is clearly buggered and needs changing.

James, sure the heater circuit is high in resistance...but what if that resistance caused the driver inside of the PCM to overheat and god bad? It is always a good idea to verify the rest of the circuit. What if a new sensor didn't fix this? Who would pay for the further diag? Technically the old sensor was bad....but what if the PCM was also?
