I was in Damascus in 1977 in April, having spent the winter in Baghdad Iraq mainly. I was at the Great Ummayad Mosque one afternoon when a group of about 30 men came through with their tour guide who was pointing out all the architectural feature when the Call to Prayer rang out. My guide excused himself and I was left alone to the side in a small niche where I could observe prayers. When he came back I asked him what her could tell me about the different ethnicities I was seeing. That particular group was from Uzbekistan. He told me it was not unusual to get many visitors from the Soviet Union. I have studied and read the geography of Central Asia, but was never fortunate enough to visit. This was a much enjoyed side trip tonight. Thank you.

(Cont'd) It's well nigh impossible to exterminate sacred beliefs by banning them. They come from the heart as opposed to coming from the brain in the first place. So it's futile to ban beauty!
