The first of three episodes in The Chinese Silk Road documentary series! In this episode, we explore the root of Islam in China in the ancient capital of Xian, before moving into the mountains to discover the incredible Maijishan cave grottoes. We then move on to Lanzhou to try a steaming bowl of the famous hand pulled noodles, before heading to the western end of the Great Wall of China at Jiayuguan.
I am in Shandong, China, and my previous company manager was an Islamic believer. He's peaceful and humorous, the only difference from us is that he doesn't eat pork. Be careful when we eat together. This leads me to believe that Islam is not a violent religion. Poverty breeds violence, regardless of what you believe.
Really nice to watch someone telling about China without preconceived agenda, but letting the story unfold through the pictures. And the yearn to see this amazing country is just growing. Brilliant work, young man!!
Thank you, John!
thank you for being so discerning.
thankur kind heart❤❤
John, you must go to China and particularly Xi’an. The history and the people will blow you away. I spent 18 years traveling to China for business and it was the greatest experience of my life. I married a woman from Liaoning province and brought her to America. When we retire we will go back. I feel so free when I am in China!
Now, why in the world would anyone have some "preconceived agenda"?
China is a very beautiful country and Iam crazy of chines art and painting.
The world needs more documentaries like these you have on your channel. I truly appreciate the genuine way in which Graeme shows us what the normal life is in the regions he visits..
An antidote to the news, that shows us only statistics, highlights and negative news and not the day-by-day.
What's Graeme doing? He needs to get to work on more of these!!!
Graeme, have you contacted the correspondent or the school of life? Please do!!!
I am a person who doesn’t watch documentaries unless she HAS to. I watched this one because I had an assignment on Silk Road, and holy! Was I amazed! The narration, the information, the scenery, all so captivating, I could hardly tear my eyes from my screen. Absolutely amazing!
Thanks Safala, I appreciate it!
Beautiful, peaceful, it's going to fantastic to see world wide trade & world peace. I wish the human race could respect each other's differences. Well done China. 💞 from New Zealand
Wow, I had no idea this wasn't created by some professional documentary filmmakers until I scrolled down the comments! This is genuinely well made.
Great job with this film, I'm shocked by the quality, narration, filmography etc. Feels like something you'd see on TV. Oh and very informative
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
An excellent documentary. Superb in all respects: be it narrative, visuals or telling the history of this ancient land.
Thanks! Really glad you enjoyed it!
Love it... Xian one of the most beautiful places to visit....
Agreed. I lived there for three years and it has a special place in my heart!
We did a week in Xian, my lovely Chinese Wife's University city. This was our 3 months adventure last year.
6 years living in China and Lanzhou la mian is still my favorite meal, though a close second is sheng jian bao...
Both so good. Although my favourites remain tang cu li ji and Chinese barbecue!
Shengjianbao is good, i stop eating Lamian ;)
u ve must lived in shanghai
and of the Chinese barbecue, Shenyang shaokao with Tiger salad is the best of the best .... sesame tahini, garlic, hot pepper oil, powder and flakes, Shanxi Lao cu (aged vinegar), cilantro, spring onion, cumin whole and powder...

Darn, I was expecting a list of credits at the end of the film...only to see 2 names. Guys...I need to take my hat off a few times for you! Well done..for making such an entertaining and well produced video.
Thanks Larry! Glad you enjoyed it. A lot of work went into it!

Thank you, Andita! Trying to get it seen as much as I can.
Iga Andita Lestari So true! Beautifully shot, amazing (non-annoying which is so hard to find these days. Everything is so loud, obnoxious and try-hard these days on RUclips and it’s difficult to find quality videos) narration, and super interesting!
Great job! Love the videos! Keep it up!
All fake. There are no more Muslim in China. They were all massacred when the communist took power. Independence for Taiwan! TAIWAN No.1!
Yu G lol
He is very young host & in youth - it doesn't carry much weight like an older commenter would carry...
Oh my god as a Chinese I think this is very well done!
Silk road. Where awe-inspiring scences of nature converge with the incredible tales of history and the colorful kaleidoscope of culture.
Very well done! Feels like a true documentary film in the cinema. Plus good steady shots, good sound, good writing...
Keep up your good work please!!!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
I've been wanting to take a trip through china, and after watching this, I want it even more.
Did you ever go?
China Loca you should do it. It’s beautiful. Drove my bicycle to many city’s and people and food are amazing.
Hi Loca, it is sad that I should tell you and everyone who watches this documentary that Xinjiang is soo much different now. China govt built concentration camps there and about millions of Uygurs are in the concentration camps although they never did mistakes. China govt forbid Uygurs Muslims to practice their religion. I hope we can do something for them. I can't believe in this era, there is still exist in the country which does what the Nazis did. I can't tell you how sad I am.
I dare you to come to Xinjiang or you can see the new Xinjiang documentary vlog by Joe HaTTab here ruclips.net/video/7ikLe591aEI/видео.html
He published the video last May.
I want nothing, but your prayers for Uygurs Muslims. Thank you.

@@daedandel4153 Have you ever been to Xinjiang, China? If you haven't been there, you don't understand at all. You only believe in political media videos. I come from Urumqi, Xinjiang. We live very well. I love my motherland, China. I was born in Xinjiang until now, and no one has ever interfered with our religious freedom. You are always deceiving everyone, liar! ! !
"Amazing!" doesnt even start to define this! Honestly, It is one of the best I've seen. Can't wait for next videos! Good luck
I really enjoyed this one as well, I also recommend this one as it deals with the Silk Road and the ancient history of Silk and its evolution in trade, transportation on the silk road and its impact on ancient, medieval and modern industry.
The history of silk is really an amazing testament to humankind's ingenuity and the randomness of life since Neolithic times. I hope you enjoy this episode. It turned out to be a much greater story than I was ever aware of.
From the mythological origins of the discovery of silk, to the science behind the actual process of silk making this lecture dives into it, giving you an important economic, archaeological and social history of this silk.
From Persia, Ancient Rome and to the modern nations of Europe silk was craved, sought, purchased and trade secrets were stolen as various peoples and enterprises sought to explore the silk industry and trade!
An awesome presentation. Terms that Laszlo Montgomery uses throughout this episode are listed below for a better understanding!
If you have not listened to The China History Podcast definitely check them out, I am just delving into the history of Asia and the content he provides on China is more than I could ever hope for.

You have a talent for making documentaries. You're really engaging and your documentaries seem to tell an interesting story. The cinematography, editing, voiceovers etc are also really well done. I see you haven't posted in a while, but I hope you keep making documentaries - maybe when you travel to other places too!
I have been in China since last ten years, I thought I seen China more than Chinese people. But my friend you amazed me, very miriculasly documented the Chinese culture, history, geography and modern days.
Cordially appreciate your smart work.
Will be happy to help you anyway.
Zahid Latif, trust me, nobody even Chinese myself know everything about China. So many cultures, traditions, food..........

Excellent for a young person to do this documentary. Humility you show shines through, simple was you explain really intricate cultural ways, laws and resilience of one's who have travels and stayed in China, it's truly remarkable. Thank you, more please! ♥️
My first thought is this is a professional documentary shot by BBC or other big media! It's really a good narration and high quality of content.
Thanks for sharing!
This better shot, polished, narrated and directed than a big team of BBC fumblers or Netflix sensationalists. It has substance and I never thought it would be so interesting. Thank you
Thank you!
very very very great documentary....I really enjoy watching it...well narrated...great choice of music...great camera shot...double thumbs up

Glad you're uptodate - The Silk Road is full of ancient prehistory, vanished religions, mystical places and valleys, and trade ... some great shots here. Hope you get rich from the Silk Road and OBOR Graeme!
your videos is so detail, deep and quality, you guys surely did a lot of research and preparation before this, great job and thanks.
I am contented visiting China from top to button. Really it wonderful especially the Great Wall of China. My best gratitude.
This is a piece of treasure. Thanks for making history so interesting.
As someone about to spend a year (hopefully longer) learning in Wudang I found this fascinating! I most definitely want to see Xian.
You absolutely must go. Never been to Wudang but hope you enjoy it!
Actually, the ancient culture is like a serial novel, the more you explore, the more you want. We show great respect for spirit and the wisdom ancient Chinese people, successfully connected the western and eastern, booming the communication culturally and economically. In a way, there is a old saying like, the eastern Asian culture lies in China, and it eventually goes to Ancient Xian, even now the Kyoto of Japan fully imitate Xian( called Chang An in Tang Dynasty 618-907) ,and Qin Dynasty( BC 211- 207) United the ancient Chinese nation, definitely, there is a lot buried underground and mysterious land has a long way to be explored and learnt.
Please make more documentaries. The quality of your videos including content is great 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I've been making some professional docs since these... but more will come to my channel soon!
Amazing documentary. Very informative and enjoyable.
Thank you!
I'm a Chinese and I just moved to Canada as a new immigrant, and I've never had the chance to visit northwestern China (新疆甘肃宁夏 etc)as deeply as you did, only for a couple short business trips. Your video brought me a great trip to the part of China where I want to visit the most, thanks bro. And yes, I miss 兰州拉面 a lot, damn! lol

Dear Graeme Langford, Your work is fantastic. Highly appreciated.

Wow, this documentary is really well done. Keep doing great job! ;)
Thank you!
My dream is to travel through the silk road one day. Nice & vivid history about silk roads does inspire a lot! Well done, Graeme!
Well done Graeme! I found this truly fascinating on so many levels. Firstly the content and narration was interesting and well timed Secondly, I was intrigued by the amount of planning and execution of your shots and audio clips that went into making this video, and lastly having been to X'ian, before it rekindled so many memories. I found China so intriguing and not what I had expected to be, the cultural makeup ( as partly featured in your documentary) was extremely diverse. I look forward to watching the remaining episodes!!
Thanks Dave! Yeah Xian is an amazing place. Hope you enjoy the last couple of episodes!

Beautiful videos. Thank you. Looking forward to more of your work.

I wonder how much time he had to research, write and deliver these stand ups. The presentation is very well done. This feels like the Discovery Channel more than National Geographic.
What a great narrator. I have been to the Xian twice and area around it but even then I did not get to see the things he showed. Just a great video. If I had money I would hire this gentleman to be my guide and take me around China.
Amazing production quality and narration!

An absolutely brilliant video to the Silk Road. I have been to Xian a few times and toured as a tourist with Chinese wife and friends to guide me all around the great city & the museum of Qin Shi Huang but never as interesting as your voyage beyond the the gate of Xian's great wall.
