- Newtons Garage fire, Lake Ronkonkoma, NY, part 3, minutes 8-12 of total video starting when siren went off for alarm. This video contains the initial knockdown.
Once he learned how to use that deck gun, he did a bang up job.
Yea. It took three guys to operate it. Poorly trained and this Suffolk County NY
It looked liked it was locked in a position and he couldn’t unlock it.
@@davidsonlankford1168 they arent paied
@@NickyD Anyone with 2 brain cells can look at a deck gun lock and twist it....
Mike Pertz who does instructional and educational firefighting videos has seen this. The firefighter on top using the deck gun or master stream if you will hadn’t received training on how to operate the system. It has to be unlocked in order to get a directional control system.
Hello Mr. Jones, this is Fred down at Newton's garage; got good news, 'your car is done; in fact it's well done!
The gun put out a lot of fire, but you still needed a few 2 1/2 handlines to hit the fire the deck gun couldn't reach. The limited angle of the deck gun prohibited hitting any of the fire in the ceiling of the garage.
Not a fire fighter...but god that guy tryna work the deck gun was frustrating me🤣
I was almost going to commend this department for approaching this fire correctly but then they drastically dropped the ball. First, they were too slow in their movements. Second, the guy on the Deck Gun didn't know how to adjust it. All that water was wasted.
1. Lay in the hydrant line.
2. Activate the pump on Tank Water.
3. Man the Deck Gun AND KNOW HOW TO USE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4. Aim the nozzle at the burning material near the unburned area and open the valve so every drop gets on the fire.
5. Pull a 2-1/2" line towards the unburned area to surgically apply the water.
You beat me to it. What a circus. Why didn't they just shut off the gun till the guy got it right.
@@skidude8989 This is the job and responsibility of every fire department and firefighter. "Eliminate the threat Quickly and Safely while using the Least amount of water." Each of those words has a meaning. Doing each of those requires the ability to Think. The American fire service doesn't do any of those things and 12 years of these videos prove that.
@@skidude8989 What is your background in skiing? That photo next to my name was the Killington poster throughout the 70's.
I guess you meant 2 lines of 1 1/2”?
Oh boy!! They're going to let me be a firefighter!! How do I work this thing???
wish me luck between today to the fire academy🔥❤️
How did you get on?
Maybe he is just the horizontal control man and not the vertical!
ROFLMAO
I like how there's two chiefs walking around with SCBA's on like they're actually going to go in there....SMH.
Most chief officers in our area will don SCBA also. Unless you are I.C>, you should be available to help where needed.
@@edloeffler9769 I.C., Safety officer, Division C command, water supply, staging, LOTS of jobs for a chief that don't need an SCBA... Exactly what was that chief going to do with a halligan on a defensive fire?????
They're using the deck gun to knock down the major fire, controlling it, then they will move in with landlines to mop up what the deck gun didnt get. The officers are prepared for when they get a line crew in and lead them in.
This is obviously a volunteer fire department by the siren wailing at the beginning of the video. We did this procedure many times due to the lack of manpower of the first due engine, if the circumstances and type of structure allowed it. If you think your smarter than the guys on this video, go fill out an application for your local volunteer fire department and see what it's really like. I did my time more than fifteen years ago when my health forced me out of it. I was a volunteer fireman for about twenty-five years before that. I miss it terribly.
Ronald Robertson first off...they had no clue what they were doing....the first guy on the deck gun was clueless on how to operate it. The second guy wasn’t much better. No less than 5 different FF’s came up to the pump panel to show the chauffeur how to use it. As far as chiefs all geared up to lead their men inside.... fire is through the roof from front to back and it’s venting out all the garage doors. There no going inside on this one. More training is in need for this department
Mechanic shops have some hazardous stuff that you dont want to breath in
Where's the hand lines and firefighters. Deck gun is nice, but get 3 or 4 hand lines and get it under control. Wow.
Deck gun was good option to get started !
The hand lines got deployed as more men and equipment showed up. For the volume and extent of fire, looks like they put it out pretty quick.
Poor fella forgot to pull the pin!
I bet they do better in parades.
Hitting the seat or main body of fire with the deck gun is always preferable to shooting over top of the fire.
First guy up there wasn't aware of how to unlock the turret to lower it. Was resolved relatively quickly.

A little training goes a long way!

So cool
Just curious the deck gun is it not possible to make it a wider stream so it would hit more of the fire?
That's just a straight bore tip, no adjustment.
If you use a master stream, a solid stream is the only way you will reach the seat of the fire.
It's possible if there's a fog nozzle on the gun. But a straight or solid stream is better. Plus a bigger smooth bore tip will shoot more gpm's which is needed to put out the fire.
You'd think they would either know how to use equipment or check it before getting called out. WTF is he doing with the hose on the truck.!!!!!!!!? 😒
Pull the fucking pin to lower the pipe!
He won't make that mistake again.. lol..
Wow! Great video! Love the use of the deck nozzle.
What the hell took the fire fighter so long in aiming the canon? Seriously, might need some more training.
@@scottbinder6656 had to undo the locking pin.
1:35 now we see it's much more effective to put water into fire.
dang the pumper operator is wasting so much water on not closing the tank fill valve since they are running off the hydrant
Every fireman needs to know some basic theory of firefighting and know how to operate equipment.
Pull the button up on the deck gun so u can crank it down training once in a while helps with that
don't know the G.P.M. of that deck gun but it knocked that fire down quickly
How did it get so involved so fast??
100 + year old tinderbox.
Drill drill drill drill and maybe drill!
As an European collegue a few thing that suprise me, besides the other comments posted. Why do you still build your pumpers like 30 years ago? Why don't you make the deck gun better accesible, or remote controlled? And it looks nice a big pump panel, but it seems to be very complicated to operate. KISS principle.
I love US fire trucks for there looks, for working with nothing beats the European style pumpers.
As an American firefighter I agree with you. I'm sick and tired of seeing lousy initial attacks in the States
@@floydyoung7329 that’s honestly a breath of fresh air to hear it from a US firefighter. US firefighting is a long way behind the times and the LODD rate is high because of it. Tradition kills!
@@CymruEmergencyResponder the problem in the states is every city or small community can provide service however they wish. We have no real standards. I work with a bunch of guys and galls that really hustle and train and it is very frustrating to me to see lazy unorganized firefighters. I have alot of respect for you all over there

May God provide intellectual, physical and spiritual power and strength to the fire fighter department team-the fire fighter officers, vehicle maintenance group, call center team n overall team. May God empower and bless you all and ur family for the noble work of saving lives while risking one's life and forest fire safety through fire helicopters. Salute to every firefighter!! Amen!!....
PERFORMANCE LOSSES FAST BECAUSE OF FIRE IT IS ALWAYS UNDERSTANDING WHAT WILL HAPPEN . NEED MORE FAST SPEED .
Truck little close I know what Monday nite drill is
Still a great job for fast recovery to pull the pin
In Germany, nobody in civilian clothes is allowed to go to the vehicle or the place of action, even if they are with the fire brigade. in denusa everyone does how and what they want can that be? Order and tactics are not so great, I have to say

How not to fight a fire right here.
Aside from the snafu of the one guy not knowing how to lower the deck gun, the response wasn't bad. Building was well over 100 years and that fire advanced very fast. 3:10 from activation it flashed over. By the 4 minute mark from activation the building was toast. This was classic surround and drown.

This is the short version, waste of time.
Poor chap must've thought some aeroplane was about to pass under after an inaugural flight. But I have to admit though, when used correctly, deck guns have some awesome power. After all, it knocked back that fire in about two minutes flat once aimed right. I'm British and I sincerely believe our fire engines could benefit from one of them beasts. But I reckon the engines' pumps and our water mains won't be up to it.
Bit more training needed ( you should know how to use all your equipment)
Ugh. Training.

That’s what happens when you skip training

Untrained firefighters....
This is a prime example of a Fire Department that doesn't train, or understand how to use their equipment. This the Chiefs fault, He is a lazy oaf .
All that because one guy didn't know how to unlock the pin on the deck gun? This is an example of a fully involved commercial structure brought under control in about 20 minutes from alarm activation. The deck gun snafu aside, looked like a pretty good to me.
Some fire videos I watch I shake my head. Fire, water, fire, water, fire, water. What so god damn hard about that ? They were spraying air.

These guys are terrible.
A fully involved and flashed over structure fire was brought under control in less than 10 minutes from arrival, which includes hitting hydrant and deck gun snafu. Doesn't sound terrible to me.
