I always find it annoying when people say that dreads don't look good on people with straight hair, by implication they mean 'white people'. My skin is white, I am of European(as far as I am aware) descent, I have never had straight hair. My hair has always been a frizzy curl, and often very difficult to brush and impossible to get it to stay that way. I have dreads because I was sick of that crap, and didn't like having short hair. Personally I think that to say that only 'black people' can have dreads and that 'white people' can't have them, is to perpetuate the same racist dichotomy that tears lives apart.

Let me just first say, I love your hair. I'm always being told that I'm being inappropriate for wanting dreads, because I'm not black, but it is always someone who isn't black getting upset. The first depiction of dreadlocks comes from Ancient Greece. People forget that in ancient times white people didn't have shampoo and oil build up would make their hair stick together especially if they were long. The Spartans hoplites wore formal locks as part of their battle dress, while Spartan magistrates known as Ephors also wore their hair braided in long locks. Even James the Just had dreadlocks all the way to his knees. Proto- Christians in Greece also wore dreadlocks as part of the Christian culture.
Even in the bible it says:
"All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow." - Numbers 6:5
The creation of dreadlocks in African doesn't have any ancient roots, in fact it is pretty new custom, no less than 17th century A.D. The only ancient record of locks in Africa is natural locks.
So I don't get why Black people have any say on white people wearing dreads, it just doesn't make sense.

The Spartans did have slaves, they were called the Helots from Laconia and Messenia, this was after the Spartans conquered their lands, they were a cross between free men and slaves, they were paid wages but they were not allowed to own any property or leave Sparta, they were also white not black.
Other parts of Greece had other types of slaves. The condition of slaves varied very much according to their status; the mine slaves and the pornai (brothel prostitutes) lived a particularly brutal existence, while public slaves, craftsmen, tradesmen and bankers enjoyed relative independence. There was no slave trade at the time so all slaves came from local conquests, so most slaves were in fact Greek.
Black African slaves came to Greece much later when the Romans conquered Greece.

Shiva and his followers wore dreadlocks. According to Roman accounts, the Celts were described to have 'hair like snakes' Germanic tribes, Greeks and the Vikings are all said to have worn dreadlocks too and Yogis, Gyanis, and Tapasvis of all sects are the most famous bearers of Dreadlocks. I guess they had black slaves too..

I'm white(extremely pale too) and I grew up in Little Haiti, Miami and I had dreads as a kid. Nobody ever fucked with me about it and it might be just because my hood knew me and didn't give a shit or whatever. When I came to atlanta I had to take them out so now I wear microbraids or cornrows, and I get mixed responses between "I like your hair" or "You're disrespecting the black community" or "damn the white girl got them cornrows" etc.

I love this video! I think it's so, SO important. Locks are not and have never been exclusive to one particular racial/cultural/religious group. Throughout history American Indigenous, Asian, Indian, Pacific Islanders, Middle Eastern, African, and YES even European people have locked their hair for a ton of different reasons. I'm full blooded Abegweit Mi'kmaq First Nation (aka Native American) and my people have been locking their hair farther back than oral history can say. But our tribe is a snow tribe, and we tend to be very light skinned and and often are mistaken for being Asian or Caucasian, and the amount of shit I've gotten for my locks is ridiculous. No one group has any sort of "claim" over dreadlocks. and to the POC's i see making the comments about thinking white people dont "deserve" dreads, you're only making yourself look ignorant.
Oh wow Sarahbella. One of my great, great, grandmothers was from PEI and Mi'kmaq. She married a Scots-Irish man. I too have been confused for other ethnicities and my lineage connection is very distant. I loc'd my hair 16 months ago for spiritual reasons. Very nice to see someone from that tribe :)
I'm Lakota and about to loc my hair, too many reasons to list. I've been told so many conflicting things about what to do with my own hair that I have just given into what I want to do. I'm glad there are other first nation people who agree with me. :)

Hell yeah. Thanks for this. As a 'white girl' with dreads, it really sucks to read comments about how nasty our dreads are, and how we're posers and what not. I used twist and rip, no products, I wash my hair with baking soda once a week and let nature do the rest. My hair doesn't smell. It does, however, look a mess, but it's working itself out. And I don't care. I just want to take a minute to say that most of the hate I seem to get is from other white people who have seen 'salon' dreads and think mine are disgusting. Like, come on guys, we have the internet. Look up the history, figure it out. There should be no hate among or across races. It's your hair, do what you want.

I am a caucasian woman with dreadlocks, and I got mine on a very personal journey while I was spending some time healing from a bad trauma with the Great Mother on a vision quest (fasting in the wilderness). My dreadlocks came to be from an understanding that they are the roots that join my inner body, all of my experiences, and my mind to the ground, and they are here to keep me grounded and remind me of that. I wasn't actually thinking about black, white or any of that. To me we are all one and a hair style does not belong to a certain culture. I travel to India a lot to teach Yoga, and I see hindu's in the Himalayas with dreadlocks to the ground, and thousand year old sculptures of Krishna and Lakshmi who have dreadlocks. I wish this was not even a question in modern day - I think we have real problems to tend to as humans. Bless.

I love your video. I started my dreads on my sober date Oct 12 2013. They kept me busy during some really hard times coming off of drugs and alcohol. Now they are a constant daily reminder of that hardship and of the daily spiritual battles I face.

Its sad to see all ethnicity's bashing each other in the comments. Everyone needs to realize that we are all one and should not separate ourselves by what our skin color is, our type of hair, or where we were born. Instead lets think about how everyone's first ancestors were originally black from east Africa. That meaning we all came from the same skin color. We are all brothers and sisters.

People that say "white people shouldn't have dreads" really need to do some history.
Truly a breath of fresh air to watch this video. When I read the title, this was not what I was expecting at all. I had locks for a while. It was a liberating experience to detach yourself from caring about your hair constantly. Just one less materialistic concern that allowed me to enjoy other things more. But, there is a lot of controversy surrounding dreadlocks. You're right @nappy headed black girl , many people do not do proper research on the topic. And I think many white people who decide to lock their hair were inspired by the beauty of the locs on a black person, so it's interesting that some people think how they do. Food for thought, for sure!!

I'm Caucasian and I have locks, stretched ears, piercings, and tattoos. More then half the people I come in contact with disagree in some way with how I look. But I'm not going to take that negative vibe with me on my journey. Hygiene is important regardless of what style your hair is, I wash my hair now more then before i had dreads. Ignorant people believe you don't wash them due to false information. Clean hair without oils or residue helps hair lock up. Every race has taken something from another race. Be thankful for it, be humbled by it. Think what Ya want I live for me.

YES, PREACH. I'm native American and I wanna start dreading my hair soon. I've done a shit ton of research on them and been wanting them for years. But I always get comments like "white people shouldn't have dreads and you're shaming the us for wanting them blah blah blah" One, I'm not white. Two, Native Americans even had dreads in their history. When I clicked on this video I expected nothing more than another person hating on other nationalities for having dreads. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard out your opinion. Power to acceptance!
Very well put! You are awesome! Apparently the Celtic people from 275 BC (When they started covering more areas) ... Eventually some tribes of Celtic became knowing as the snaked hair people. The snake haired people had many tiny braids or dreads. Dreads & other hair styles came a long way. For some it was a way of life... honor to have long hair. Some Native women use to cut their hair when grieving for their loved ones. To let others know, if they must. I am Native-Italian. I get picked on left & right. I get called Sqwa, savage, Crazy Indian, etc: ... & Now, now i have my hair in the Marley Twist. I love them. People ask me do i just stop washing my hair. Um No... of course i wash my f**king hair. If people stop fussing & labeling other's appearances wrong... this world would be a lot better. Love & Peace.

I started my dread journey 9 yrs ago. And by that I mean my interest in dreads. Being a Gemini, I thought maybe it was a phase and it would blow over. 2 years ago I did about 9 baby dreads and was in a shitty relationship where the dreads were an issue, so I brushed them out. 2 days ago I began the process again. It's wonderful to see a positive, smiling, beautiful opinion about white people and dreads. During the process of the good, bad, and ugly in the beginning, we need all the positive, supportive vibes we can get!
Ojiru (and all people talking about cultural appropriation). I am a white woman with dreadlocks and guess what ? Two Zimbabwean guys made my dreadlocks, IN Africa ! I travelled for 2 months all around Southern Africa and nobody ever told me anything about appropriating their culture, not a single fucking time ! In fact, they were all happy to see me with dreadlocks and a lot of people came to talk to me and tell me they liked my dreads, they gave me tips about how to take care of them and washing them and everything, and walked with me to become friends. So I don't care were dreadlocks came from, if it's Africa or anywhere else, I love my hair, I love Africa and the fact that I'm white (I'm not american, i come from switzerland) doesn't mean I'm a racist bitch and the fact that my ancestors were stupid cunts doesn't mean I AM ! So because I am white and because my ancestors were assholes you have the right to insult ME ? I am fucking tired of people insulting white people because of our ancestors ! After expressing my thoughts of this to my roommate they had made feel like crap telling me how I was downgrading a whole culture. At first I thought that didn't make any sense I wanted to try because I loved it? But I didn't want to offend anyone so I started looking around and you really put it perspective for me. I actually think dreadlocks are a symbol of unity, all people can have them. It kind of breaks down barriers. I know so many people who connect with each other, black and white, mexican, asian, coming together based on a common interest. A conscious decision. Dreadlocks are a sacred practice. Thinking it is only "allowed" for a certain group of people just distances yourself further from humanity.

I personally don't call my locks dreadlocks because I understand when african americans are offended with white people having "dreadlocks". If you look back in history it was about fighting against the white society and because many whites back then thought they were nasty they called them DREADlocks and they were kind of proud that they were fighting against this and the name is/was for the brave blacks who were fighting against the opression of the whites (sorry if I got anything wrong or if I didn't explained everything right). For me I call my locks fairy/elf locks because of the celtic story: "When young children, especially girls, wake from an evening’s slumber with tangles and snarls in their hair, mothers with a tradition of fairy folklore might whisper to their daughters that they had caught fairy locks or elf-locks" and you get bad luck if you brush them out. Thank you so much for this video!! I am white, my roommate is black, and we both started our dreads at the same time. It's been really fun to see the differences in our hair textures and watch the way they lock up differently. Since I got dreads, I've noticed them more on other people, and as you said, whether your hair is messy or gross or not has nothing to do with your skin color or your hair texture even. My hair is sometimes messy, sometimes neat, just like it was sometimes messy or neat when I didn't have locks.

My hair is super thick and long. it tries to dread itself. all the time. and I'm (mostly) white. i don't use anything. I'm constantly fighting the dreads from birthing themselves... lol but at some point if i keep growing this hair it's going to end up being dreaded.

Thank you. I’m totally subbing to you. I finally got my locs about a week ago, honestly I think the fear of people being so hateful was one of the contributing factors in me waiting so long. I finally said, “ya know what, I don’t care, I want to do this and I’m gonna do it”. So I did and man, I’ve been so happy since. I believe dreads are beautiful on everyone. I LOVE seeing them, on all ethnicities honestly. You’re so right, I haven’t put in any products and have decided that I don’t want to use all that stuff, but no hate to anyone who does. Dreads are beautiful, to me it’s an almost spiritual thing, which is what makes them so beautiful. ❤️

THANK YOU! Yes I capslocked that! Finally someone who speaks the truth about dreads! I love you for this. Most people just don't understand that dreads on white people also come naturally over time. I mean if I don't comb my hair for a while you see little baby dreads pop out anyway! Its a natural process for crying out loud. Sure you can help the process go faster by sectioning and crocheting. But naturally it would work the same way.
You can have quicker results with the processing, but the dreads will be less healthy and possibly fall out later. All natural neglect/freeform dreads are the best way to go.

I had dreads for 8 years until I recently cut them off. People are so misinformed about the origins of dreads it just comes along with the hair style. I personally don't care what your skin color is if you have dreadlocks I got love for you regardless. People just get online and act as if they know everything without taking the time to actually look into and researching it. I like your opinion and agree ten fold.
I'm white with thick curly hair that dreads naturally. The curls separate and dread. I have a black friend who's african textured hair doesn't dread pretty naturally. It turns into a carpet. One big nasty mat. It's not about black or white. It's an individual thing.

There is so much misinformation, so much ego, so much of that just floating about everywhere. Overstand this: WHITE and BLACK are not skin colours first of all. Your skin has a tone, and its neither white or black. So people innerstanding this should stop using such terms. Being a hostage of ones own rational thinking, is what brings people to do this, which is what? Its the need to define everything, put everything into categories. That is left brain thinking. You can force/train/program yourself to be FREE. You just have to want it, read about it, be it, give it importance.
Now.. Ego. It causes a lot of problems, and it only exists to give you false hopes, to attach emotions unto something that doesnt exist. If everyone abolished ego (to a bare minimum, not completely) then obviously lots of problems would be solved. Thats what spirituality teaches (not only that), meditation (different types of meditation, to learn what it is).
Locks for some people is more about the transcendence, like it is for me. You transcend other peoples opinions and you transcend your own ego. You feel freer by not caring about other peoples expectations (caring way less, actually, I know you overstand) and actually you learn that those expectations are not real. You create them in your head. You create paranoias and safe zones. Humans always resort to this bi-polar type of being.
