They serve a purpose. I got one for $11 USD delivered. It was actually free, because eBay gave me a voucher. It was called MX9 Android TV box, with that Ironman interface. It plays movies from USB, which is the only reason I bought it. It installs APK files, and I don't use it online. For an old TV that lacks movie file playback, they're ideal, and if you can get them cheap enough, they're well worth the price. Despite the low price, mine is pretty responsive, and plays full screen movies from files with no issues.

I have three cheap Chinese TV boxes and have set up two for a friend. All are different brands. Some I really love and others not so much. All of them have Playstore access so not sure what you are talking about there. They all play 4k also. They are very different from each other so be careful making universal statements based on a single box. The one thing you are right about is that all have Netflix issues. These are drm-based issues and it means only the mobile version of Netflix can be made to work. The other thing they have in common is that they are all much, much, much cheaper than the rolls royce brands you recommend. They are all better than the under powered and under specced Amazon firestick. All of them run Kodi and Plex really well.

Mi box(2gig, 16gb) is a rip off, you have to compromise on speed and storage just for an unnecessary Google certification. Our Sony 4k Android TV doesn't come close to it.
So if you are looking for the best experience, Go Shield, if you can't afford it, collect for it 👌🏼
Only issue is the Netflix app detects the smartDNS, so I have to use Netflix & Prime through the TV for US content. Hope this helps.

The only thing I'd add is that the Mi and Nvidea are the only boxes in your market, that have both Google and Netflix Certification.
In other parts of the world there are other boxes that are certified - we have 4 locally available certified in South Africa (5, if you take into account people are bringing in the Nvidea themselves)

@@neon_dex42 Right now if you’re looking ‘normalI’ priced Android TV (Ie Not Shield pricing), I’d either go for Netogy Nova or Mi 4K stick. They’re very similar inside, but a few key differences:
      a) The Mi 4K supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support
      b) The Nova has 16Gb storage and being a box rather than a stick, has ports such as Ethernet, USB etc
Both have the same processor, RAM, AV1 support, Android TV version etc

I mean you're not wrong, they certainly don't have the most polished UI/UX because it is AOSP but that's also what grants them a lot of flexibility. The nvidia shield is WAY overpriced imo, maybe nextgen will be somewhat fairly priced. However, if you need official streaming apps support then Android TV boxes are the way to go. For me, an unrepentant pirate, aosp boxes are perfect. Had a Minix for years, looking for a replacement now because the OS is so old by now that my apps stopped working properly. I also can't update them anymore but that's not so important, if they still worked properly I'd keep the Minix even if the apps versions remained the same (they still play all my media anyways).

I have an inexpensive T95 Max android TV box, and it does everything I want. Bought it because Amazon kept deleting the Twitch app on my Roku box, which won't happen on my T95 because it runs android phone o/s. Picture quality on Netflix and Amazon prime is excellent, better than my certified Roku box.
One question - won't the official Android TV boxes have far less available apps than the standard Android o/s these boxes run?

Its all about hardware and drivers. With community interested to hacky hacky the chinese models you can easily go way better compared to more expensive ones. Keep in mind thou that panfrost is still under development to provide proper opensource alternative to gpu drivers.
You might wanna buy those official or other versions of hardware ofc if you have the money and want out of the box experience to be "solid". But they arent definately the best bang for the buck.
Also you should buy only latest hardware models of those boxes even they would have less mature firmware/software/driver atm. They will be faster in future when opensource support gets there if it gets there.

Most people will use these android boxes for Kodi corelec or librelec or kodi on android. Netlfix is bundled now with some many other devices that you dont need dedicated box for it. In australia even Foxtel now provided Netflix officially as does FetchTv. Also the andorid boxes you refer to have other uses retro gaming etc. Shield would be nice but if you loom at reviews there has been very little in way of performnce increase between previous editioms and the current new one. While in these other android boxes there has been good growth and much of the dev work being done on those also contibutes to the official boxes. Further ther is also the Odrioid N2. These boxes have there application and uses. Your review is true but onky from a netflix centred perspective.

I bought one here in the Philippines for 599 php or about 12.50 USD. The GUI is exactly like the one in this video. It has access to Google Play store and you can sideload APKs into it actually. You can also download aptoide to it and get your apps from there. The interface is definitely as clunky as shown here. I use it for Netflix and RUclips. Works well enough for me. A little bit of slow browsing here and there isn't really an issue for me at this price range. Turns my non-smart TV into a smart one. Gonna try some games on it to see how well the CPU/GPU holds up. Apparently, it has an octa core 1.4 ghz CPU, so it might be able to run emulators at least. (Also, I have a mobile only Netflix subscription and it works flawlessly with this box)

Don't listen to all those people here who claim that he is wrong with this video. The video is absolutely correct! Just because non-certified TV boxes with some hacked together Android can run apps like Kodi, doesn't invalidate the problems he mentions! All sorts of issues arise with the awful UI those noname Chinese boxes use and it takes a lot of tinkering to find a semi-good solution. Even Kodi has issues with those Tablet Android Boxes like home screen tiles.

I got and android box for $60 bucks and pretty satisfied. Its 4k, 64gb, its fast ass hell, play store, plays emulators, connect game controllers with usb or bluetooth. And if the app isnt instore, you can download apk and install it. If you dont like the interface you can download new launchers in play store. And most people buy these to replace cable. Because you can download everything with ease with android boxes. Better than rokus and firesticks. I have a shield and its good, but for the price tag and 16gb of storage its not ideal. But it is a superior product.
