Now, I've been playing the piano for 47 years (classically trained)and dude, up until this very minute, I never knew that's how easy boogie woogie and early rock and roll was played!! I'm going to study this video for a few weeks and then dazzled my friends!! Thanks Brendan!
Thank you, Dr K: I'm not a piano player, but I love both boogie-woogie and early rock and roll piano. Your lesson here helps me understand how the former morphed into the latter.
I love how you show us your piano skills Brendan, and i love THIS camera person. She has a very sweet voice and a great sense of humor. You two have a great chemistry.
Thanks for being such an important part of my new daily piano challenge. You're my new go-to piano teacher! I am really enjoying your left-hand and right-hand lessons, especially when you delineate one style from another. Thanks for identifying the defining element of each style. Really great! I can actually play this stuff, after all!
your awesome man. not just your skills but you yourself are very entertaining. it's just man, watching you makes me want to quit because it overwhelms me to think of how long it would take me to get that great. but u are the " Patrone of Piano " no doubt. Chris. corpus Christi TX
You play just like the "killer" Brendan. Always brilliant piano playing Sir! If you ever listen to the 1989 soundtrack from the movie "Great Balls of Fire" starring Dennis Quaid as Jerry Lee, I think it's Jerry Lee at his best. He played and sang all the music for the movie. Thank you for taking some time out for Jerry Lee Lewis, he's definitely one of the founders of Rock and Roll.
Илья Девяткин , yes I know, Jerry Lee recorded all the songs for this movie and Dennis Quaid lip synced everything. I should have been more descriptive.
He also pounds a left handed 1/4 note on the root 1st with pinky while rocking back-n- forth from the 5th to 6th with his thumb…his right hand hitting the chord on the “&” … his cousin Mickey Gilley used the same riff on his hit “the girls all get prettier at closing time “ . I fronted them both back in 1985 at the HighKicker Saloon (a Gilley’s Club nock-off ) in Pontiac, MI.
Brendan - HOT DAMN, Dude!! I've been searching the 'tube for years trying to get JLL lessons. YOU ARE THE MAN!!! If I learn how to play Whole Lotta Shakin', I can die a happy man. Keep Strokin', Leroy

As a non-piano player listening to your music, I find myself wanting to learn how to play the piano, so I could play rock-in-roll or boogie woogie someday!
Dr. K is the clonemiester! His expert videos are cloning little Jerry Lee Lewises all over the planet. Thanks Dr. K. Please mak a slow down video of the right hand Lewis!
Love it ! You are amazing, the energy, those glasses :D thanks for sharing with us. This channel is the best ! I'd like to send best wishes to the Camera Person as well ;)
Jerry uses the pattern you show in his later years- BUT it is not the original as used in the original "Whole Lotta Shakin" etc. In that he plays the left one octave lower- and plays c-e-g-a-eflat-e-eflat-e and after every bass note play a triad in the right hand. So the pattern is one left hand note- a triad, alternating left-right etc making the appropriate chord changes per the blues pattern. Of course this is assuming your playing in C. This is a simple explanation and does not take into account the runs to F and G- but if you try it you will soon get the idea. Once you get the basic pattern down you can begin to modify the right hand. This pattern was used by Jerry up till about 1965. And of course it goes without saying he never played the song the same way if he did it ten thousand times!
I'm a total beginner. Please explain. If he plays e flat in that C chord sequence wouldn't it come out sounding like a minor chord? I haven't tried it, but do you mean that you are tying it in with major chord work with the right hand? Sorry for my naivety.
@@devonmoors Mr Bland, sorry I did not see your comment until today! It's been a few years- but I will try to be short First, there are MANY patterns one can use to achieve the "feel" of the song. One simple pattern is c e g a g a g a, playing an inverted triad in the right hand- g c e. Remember it's one ( or more) in the base followed by the triad in the right. You can also hold c and e down (turning them into whole notes) while playing g a g a- in the left hand of course. As far as playing e flat as mentioned earlier- without getting technical- it will work fine. There is so much that could be discussed, but this is too long as is!! Good luck, your probably way beyond this by now anyhow. PS playing on a digital piano with rhythms and accomp will make your playing so much easier. Cheers
Very informative lesson mate, am venturing into fine tuning my own sound as a rock and roll pianist.. Have always liked the Jerry Lee style ... Never been able to work out his correct left hand pattern.. I have been playing 1st flattened 3rd sharpened 4th and 5th... Have you ever looked at Fats Domino's Left hand??
+John Carpenter yeah, left hand even faster, but the point is to play it with the right hand properly , in the correct rhythm . While learning new left hands I have a problem of playing the other similar in some places
I realize that this is not a right-hand lesson but (from your demonstration), am I right that a defining element of Lewis' right hand is the use of the repeated 9th/Tonic crunches, as well as the repeated minor 7th solid interval?
i guess it's a common problem but.. i can play with my left hand.. And i can play with my right hand. And never the twixt shall meet. Any tips? i can get a good rhythm going but the second i start to throw in the right hand everything falls apart. practice practice practice?
I've always wondered how JLL managed to make that pumpin' piano sound. Simple chord work pumped real hard with the next note after the end of the chord. What is that called? I know the note before the last note is called a sustained, eg the F in a C chord. Excuse my naievity. Only just found you. You rock Brendan.
He does rock. The "f" in a C chord would be the fourth, the next note you refer to is the sixth, an "a" note. Think of it this way, the boogie pattern here is 1-1-3-1-5-1-6-1-5-1-6-1-5-1-6-5, no matter what chord you are on. The chords themselves are just C, F and G, Rock 'n Roll.
Either Jerry wasn’t so great or the both of you are, only if you were born in tha time as him and you didn’t marry your cousin you would have been a household name for us aged ones
can you type out what the notes are in the sequence, i'm trying to follow along with my guitar but never played piano, i figured its in c since I tried the "standard boogie riff" ie c e g a bflat a g c , but as far as that, i dont really know any more since its hard to see since you alternate fingers
I've been LOOKING for SOMEONE To Demonstrate The Piano Intro to "Goin' Down" by The Jeff Beck Group! You Look Like A Guy that could do it! Are You familiar with the song?

Terrific lesson.

Richtig, Rock'n'Roll Boogie ist ein spezieller Boogie Typus. Jerry Lee Lewis hat Ihn in die Taufe gehoben.
Einzigartig!

Or sit and play the repetitive 3 finger part while he slams the rest of the keys, that would be an honor for me.
Thanks!
Great lesson! You mixed in some humor and kept it fast paced. I'll be looking for more from your channel.
Thank you very much for this!!
Spot on Brendan! Sounds great! & good job Cameraperson!

You can do the left hand in less than a week...easily
+John Carpenter yeah, left hand even faster, but the point is to play it with the right hand properly , in the correct rhythm . While learning new left hands I have a problem of playing the other similar in some places
Great lesson.
RIP Jerry Lee :( 28thOct2022, and many thanks to Brendan for the inspiration to buy a piano

"Great balls of fiiireeee..!"

I just like to listen to him I don't want to learn to play piano. I like percussion.
Jerry lee had the heaviest left hand.
I can play that left hand but I cant play it with the right hand. What can I do?
Practise.
Either Jerry wasn’t so great or the both of you are, only if you were born in tha time as him and you didn’t marry your cousin you would have been a household name for us aged ones
My left hand falls out with my right hand, battle ensues!
Hi ..can you show how Jerry plays Hong Kong blues?
very good
I know this video is a year old. But we lost Fats Domino 2 weeks ago. I think Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis are the only originals left?
Hello ,Need the right hand slow down ,awesome player !!
can you type out what the notes are in the sequence, i'm trying to follow along with my guitar but never played piano, i figured its in c since I tried the "standard boogie riff" ie c e g a bflat a g c , but as far as that, i dont really know any more since its hard to see since you alternate fingers
C C E C G C A C G C A C G C A G
Anyone know an easier right hand riff pattern to go with the left hand he was playing?
Trying it out Brendan
I am 78 and never played anything.i have a difficult time catching all the notes could you please go one note and a time and say it.thankd
I've been LOOKING for SOMEONE To Demonstrate The Piano Intro to "Goin' Down" by The Jeff Beck Group! You Look Like A Guy that could do it! Are You familiar with the song?
Give it up buddy, dont quit your day job. you'll NEVER play like Jerry Lee Lewis.🤣

I have a keyboard and have also played on a real piano. I find real pianos are easier to play. There is more space for your fingers
