Heard Lewis say the exact same thing. Guessing those extra tire sets do add up finacialy so people on a tighter budget have to use worn or unsueted gear. Pays off in the end. Learn to fight while at a disadvantige and you'll put up a proper fight when on level ground. Then again, with all due respect to his driving. It was the Brauws dubble diffuser that won the championship. Yes, he beat Barricello but he was never at the sharpest point of the knife neather. Button was the only driver who beat Hamilton Fair and Square. I still believe Rosberg to this day was gifted the 2016 championship by poor reliability on Hamilton’s part. It’s obvious that Hamilton felt so bitter about the lack of unreliability on Rosberg’s part at the season ending race in Abu Dhabi when he held up the whole leading pack just to try and win the Championship. It’s also quite ironic how Rosberg then retired from the sport 4 days later don’t you think?

Seems like he was the last of the gentleman drivers, although George Russell appears to have a similar character. Hopefully Williams can improve or Russell can move to Mercedes before it drags him down.
I also really admired his driving style. His steering inputs were so precise and he'd barely change steering angle throughout a corner. Jenson was my favorite driver when he was with BAR-Honda. I think she showed that he was championship type material if given a car that he liked. I think he also showed that he could also give into the pressures of F1 and life in general and be nothing but a "good driver".
To be honest I think his greatest years were with McLaren. He showed that he could step toe to toe with great racers like Hamilton year after year and do well. Many people say that the only reason why Button did well was due to Hamilton's ability to develop cars but to me that says even more about Button. Usually in F1 if a car is built around one driver's liking and not the other then the the other driver usually suffers. In this case Button rose up the occasion and at times did better or at least matched Hamilton. That's where I point when people say that Button was never championship material. That he had it all along he just needed a good car and a team that would support him.

It's strange that a driver who was so good in the wet found it so hard to adapt when the car wasn't entirely to his liking in the dry. He totally disappeared for the middle of the 2009 and 2012 seasons while his respective team mates didn't struggle to nearly the same extent. In his early years, he was too much of a party boy, so I don't really judge him too harshly on 2000-2003 (not that he was by any means dreadful in that time).
The blown diffusers of 2011 were absolutely tailor made for him though. He was brilliant that year and made very few mistakes with some great drives.

In his book, he said Renault boss Flavio Briatore always publicly criticized him as a playboy because he didnt perform well. Similar thing happened with Kimi Raikkonen. F1 drivers always gotta deal with bad press. Button learned from Fisichella that a driver needs to work with engineers to set up the car to your liking, thus his improvement afterwards. Button's story is a good read.

Depending on what happens this season with the COVID stuff, if a team was to have a driver need to miss a race for some reason they could do far worse than asking Button to fill in for a single one off race. I mean his early career he was constantly being shafted. Goes to Williams, the next year he's out because of Montoya. Goes to Benetton/Renault, the next years he's out because of Alonso. Then it was picking the best options out of middle of the pack seats, which was BAR/Honda, which again shafted him because of instability. They were good car, bad car, ok car, really bad car. In the end in payed off with Brawn, which made him be able to move to Mclaren, which he proved he wasn't as bad as some said, he was able to hold his own against a natural talent like Hamilton in his own house. So in my book he deserves respect.

I was a JB fan since he started at BAR. I was like 13 or something. We have a similar first name and the same initials, and I didn't quite understand that I was gay yet. Jenson was my crush and my hero. Family were all Schumacher supporters, and then it was just me shouting for Jenson. The first time he won a race I shouted so loudly I was shouted at by my family 😂 then it was the horrors of Earth Dreams and Honda leaving F1, lowest of low points for a JB fan. And then..... Magic! Brawn, #22... One of the happiest moments of my life. I felt affirmation for my support. All the years of laughter by Schumacher fans and DNFs melted away. He is one of my few sporting heroes. Jenson Button, Caster Semenya, Natalie Du Toit. Just epic humans! I do wish JB would do another season so he can break Barichellos record, but if he never raced again, I'd still die a proud Button fan.

Judging by the graph, i would argue his 2011 season was far better than his 2010 or 12 seasons. He seemed the only driver able to consistently match Vettel on race pace. It’s worth pointing out that Hamilton had easily his worst season in 2011, struggling mentally - some of that was surely down to JB’s form. Even Alonso wasn’t much of a match for Button that year.
2011 wasn’t outstanding, but was far more consistent than 2010 or 2012.

Quality driver, very underrated, even after his World Title. Didn't have the quali pace of a Hamilton, Schumacher or Alonso, but he had the race pace and craft to match them and often beat them. His seasons as team mates to Lewis and Fernando highlight that. Whenever the race chucked up something unexpected wether that be rain, tyres, crashes, JB would always shine and again often beat Hamilton in those Mclaren year, thinking Aus, China 2010, Hungary, Canada 2011 etc. 2011 was his best year, regularly beat Lewis and was the only driver to consistently trouble Vettel (who was driving a car which at some tracks qualied a second clear of the pack). Had he kept his williams drive for that 03 car, and had some better luck and realibilty in 2010 and 2012 he could have easily of added to the world title and be rightfully considered an all time great. As it is, with 1 title he will probably go down as a 'second tier' legend, behind Senna, Clark, Prost, Lewis , Alonso etc
