@@electrontube You totally nailed it. Seriously, who builds a Gambler or any off road rig without welded in recovery points and reinforced bumpers? Nobody wants to be broke down on a trail ... sometimes frustrations run a little close to the surface ... in the end, everyone was happy! Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
This guy clearly knew what he was getting into. This wasn't a dude and his family in a rental car. It is as a custom built vehicle that failed. He should have known it would happen eventually. No excuse
One thing that surprised me. Once you took the bumper off, that car had a brilliant lifting point. Maybe that method will be used a bit more in the future.
Only if the frame is exposed. Some cars/trucks that "lifting point" could give or now be bent. That could be "the bumper" instead of that plastic piece removed and most cars now the bumper is ment to give to protect the people. It's why Matt doesn't like to hook onto them as he's learned they are not cheap to replace =P Still I agree with you Dave, when you are tossed lemons you make lemonade.

Big lesson here for car builders. .. Make sure to have hard points at the ends for pulling and lifting.. Maybe even some side attach points would come in handy too, for dragging sideways when needed.
Blankie Man and Untied Shoes were nay saying and ego slaying...Matt was just like I'll give you a lift and an education. What a true Wrecker Operator. Been there.

Having worked in the medical field you have to keep compassion in mind because you are dealing with otherwise good people in a stressful situation. I'm sure the same applies to situations like this. Enjoyed the video.
Matt, Take a look at the US Army Buffalo MRAP fenders. For the heavy wrecker, something like the ones on the Buffalo might be a good solution. You could engineer a way to make them quickly removable so you could only use them when muddy conditions (and/or snowy slush) require them but store them away if you don't need them.
Matt I have been using your rope to save Gamblers in Florida for 2 years. Most recently I drug a Ford Tempo through sugar sand at 20-30mph for over 3 miles!

if Merlin and Chad and Paul and Matt did the Gambler on one or two cars they would have a ton of fun and they could support each other. it would be one for the ages that's for sure
Coilovers were removed to prevent damage to them, as someone indicated the replacement cost per coilover is approximately equal to the value of the entire car unmodified. Prior to Matt's arrival the intention was to place the rear of the Mustang onto the Van Flatbed and tow it out that way. In the shuffle of preparing for the mustang to be towed out the coil overs were placed in another vehicle to be returned to camp. That vehicle left a couple minutes before Matt arrived. Danny (the customer) does have a strange demeanor but a heart of gold. The video doesn't show all the joking around and humor. That mustang build was the culmination of years of work and trial and error, damaging it by being incautious would be heartbreaking. The bingo card was part of the event, helping a broken down gambler was one of the spots on the card that's why I insisted it be given to Matt. My 2¢. I was the man with no name (costume I wore for the event)
Thanks for the context… I work in retail when people treat me like that I try to remain respectful and positive but sometimes I also get frustrated and I know my customers can tell so I try really really hard to remain calm and respectful like Matt. Also nice poncho
Good job being patient with the customer. Wrecker functioned perfectly. The Mustang owner learned a valuable lesson on the weaknesses of his design, and vehicle selection.
Hey Matt, You could use a makeshift platform that attaches to the center hookup of the wrecker and allows the lines coming off the boom to connect to it for lift. This will give you the ability to get the platform under the vehicle and lift it without damaging the vehicle, it will also allow the platform to pivot on the various angles that a trail can subject the towed vehicle to. That or a full off road trailer that you can load a vehicle onto and secure that has wheels all the way at the back so as to prevent any scraping with maybe 40 inch wheels on the trailer.
You have the patience of a saint Matt! I would’ve left mustang guy high and dry I get he’s frustrated but cmon guy take a breath breaking it and recovering it is part of the fun
The joke who broke it is so damn demanding, his attitude was so amazing, made it seem like everybody there owed him somthing. He drove that pile in so he should be a bit more grateful to people like Matt for getting it out! Great job on putting up wit such an ahole
Yes! Come to the og gambler up here in Oregon! I'd love to see the creations you would come up with! Get your whole team into cheap beaters and go have fun!
I figure if my build got me stuck in that Mustang, I'd have been humble and thankful, however, his grumbling did save his rear bumper and mwybe he thought, "Yeah, my sh** broke, pls don't break it more." and we've all seen the "more damage" happen in recovery. Still, I love it when Matt and crew shows up and people are actually happy to see them roll in. Matt, if you build a rig for that run you should put a big honkin', truck mounted leaf vacuum on it, like the one's used by city leaf collection. It'll pick up trail litter easily.
Same. Was it just for the sake of calling Matt? It also seemed odd to care about the bumper of your $500 beater mustang that you essentially ruined (for resale) by converting it into an off roader.
Wow the customer wasn't super great. If I drove that wreck into that trail, I'd be grateful you could destroy my bumper and get me out. "How bad?" "Whats your plan on lifting it?" I'd wanna drive off and leave him to his own problems if he acted like that.
I am confused as to why he took the shocks off and removed them from the site? I mean why would you take parts off your car and put them in a different location?
I would love to see you guys in the Gambler 500! I can only imagine the shenanigans you would get into. A small part of me has wanted to turn me mx5 miata into a g500 machine, it'd be fun to see you guys do something as, or more ridiculous
So the mustang owner might have been a bit rough on the video, but I'm absolutely confident he is exhausted, possibly hung over, and spent probably the last 15+ hours either bouncing around in that rig or trying to fix it. Plus. Although he was negative, it was for good intentions. He didn't want the rig to fall off or become another problem halfway off the trail. I know Danny, he's a great guy. These Utah gamblers are an amazing group and helped me when I was in need when I went on one of their events a year or so ago.
Peanut riding in Matt’s lap with one paw out the window 😂😂😂. I love the fact that Matt takes the dogs on some of his jobs and lets them have a good run and play in the water when it’s available.
It's not very hard to tell that Matt has dealt with ridiculous customers for a long time. Great video and professionalism. An idea for the mud. You might have thought of this already, but you could possibly mount some rubberized / plastic fenders over your tires on the axel so the turn with the wheel. Check out the front end of the John Deere 4455 model tractor from the 90's for an example. Those work great working out in the farm fields all day. Thanks for all your videos, it's fun watching the rescues and vehicle builds.
@@currentresident15666 absolutely, Tom was doing his job by being a spotter. They came up on parts that could have done damage to the mustang and being pulled out in reverse makes it hard to see what's ahead so Tom was the insurance they were doing it right.

Class act, I'm sure they are living their religion with every encounter. My only pause about them is the dangerous predicaments they get Lizzy into. She doesn't seem to mind.
@@AudioFreqx I watched the entire video before I commented. The guy realized he had instantly jeopardized any chance at having Matts' respect and took an opportunity to distract from his obvious error in attitude.

So I have a suggestion for fenders for the heavy wrecker. Look at the fender systems that are on the all-terrain forklifts. It’s essentially a 1 inch tube that comes off the steering knuckle with a big plastic fender that sits over the tires. You can bolt and unbolt them from the steering knuckle as you need it and it would keep mud from slinging everywhere.

That customer had some negative energy at first. Matt deflected the negativity like Superman deflects bullets lol. While the customer just kept saying everything you can’t do, Matt just kept trying to figure out what they could do, and got it figured out. I’ve had customers like that, and they’re usually happy in the end like this guy was, but man does it take patience to not get frustrated with all the negativity during the process lol
He definitely mellowed out by the end, its just a phase, guy gets frustrated after trying so hard to fix it and failing and that attitude just smolders for a while until it burns out and he's just thankful and happy to have gotten help. If only more people would have the grace and patience of Matt, the world would be a magnitudes better place to live if that were the case, but unfortunately most people only live life for themselves and nobody else, and that means they just give up in the face of hardship. Man, sometimes you just wanna pack up your truck and turn around and leave. Dude said no to almost everything, it's amazing he ended up happy
I was thinking the same thing.
I am a heavy tow operator and have done exactly that. Packed up my Truck and drove away. Felt bad latter . But dam it felt good at the time
What a guy! So many demands for a problem he created.
i noticed he calmed down a lot and was way more polite once teh vehicle was down. i can't imagine how stressed he was. personally i thought he restrained himself pretty well, it could have gone a lot worse
@@BikingWIthPanda it's a Gambler car, you should go with a plan when it breaks... because it's gonna break.
Thought the same thing.
He grabbed a bud light out the trunk so there is that.
@@electrontube You totally nailed it. Seriously, who builds a Gambler or any off road rig without welded in recovery points and reinforced bumpers? It's a ghetto-fabricated heap of crap, of course it's going to break down eventually. Scrap steel is cheap, get a welder and figure it out. Don't blame others for your lack of preparedness. Don't blame the guy with the wrecker, he's there to Un-F the situation you got yourself into to begin with.
Something definitely off about the costumer, Matt as always keeping his composure
Safe to assume anyone who enters the gambler 500 is a little off 😊
I think the owner might’ve been a little disheartened
@@TheBnbonthebeach or a little bit of an ungrateful jerk!
@@gregparrott 🤣my bad...fixed.
It's why Matt doesn't like to hook onto them as he's learned they are not cheap to replace =P
Still I agree with you Dave, when you are tossed lemons you make lemonade.
Matt is the man… His patience, empathy and respect for those that clearly lack it, is amazing.
I understand how easy it is to judge a situation from afar, but it breaks my heart to read these hurtful and off-based comments about Danny. I had the pleasure of meeting him during a Gambler 500/Sons of Smokey cleanup recently. He is beloved in the community and notorious for going out of his way to help folks on and off the trails. He is an incredible mechanic, and not afraid to send it. I trailed behind him as he took this manual mustang 2wd OPEN DIFF through Hells Revenge in Moab- no problem. You can see it on the gambler page, it was wild to witness! From what I’ve heard he was mid-repair when someone ELSE called Matt. All I see here is a guy communicating why certain methods would or would not work based on what he knows having built the car himself. I mean that would be very unprofessional. I feel like we have all been in that guys situation. He probably thought he was going to be driving out but that didnt happen. Id also be pretty annoyed if i spent hours of work for nothing. Doesnt excuse a bad attitude but put yourself in his shoes. E Anyway he was in a much better mood by the end and everyone left happy.
Y'all are soft as a pillow, jesus.
Big lesson here for car builders. .. Make sure to have hard points at the ends for pulling and lifting.. Maybe even some side attach points would come in handy too, for dragging sideways when needed.
Good point! Not a bad idea👍👍
Blankie Man and Untied Shoes were nay saying and ego slaying...Matt was just like I'll give you a lift and an education. What a true Wrecker Operator. Been there.
I did the Gambler 500 a couple years ago in a 95 Honda Del Sol with small lift and all terrain tires and had a absolute blast! Would love to see y'all do a build and take it out to enjoy!
Talk about entitled customers... customer service off road is just like retail 😂😂😂
losers everywhere. they say don't judge a book by its cover... that's dumb... that fat fool is a loser
Having worked in the medical field you have to keep compassion in mind because you are dealing with otherwise good people in a stressful situation. I'm sure the same applies to situations like this. Enjoyed the video.
I was thinking that. He didn't realize he was getting unscrewed, tough to see when you screw yourself that bad 😅
Some people don't deserve help. You're a better man than I am!
I hope everyone of us can learn a valuable lesson from Matt and Tom Tom today. Such patience and humility.
EnerGy Jack you nailed it! It is about being the best person you can be regardless of the circumstances, Matt and Tom Tom conducted a world class training session for us all.

Definitely do the Gambler 500. Not only could it be interesting to see what you build, but it sounds like a great cause.
if Merlin and Chad and Paul and Matt did the Gambler on one or two cars they would have a ton of fun and they could support each other. it would be one for the ages that's for sure
Eh, I’m not sure that’s a group I want to see again.
Thanks for the context.
I agree, the customers attitude was fine, just reserved..
Guy was an a hole, even with the context.
Maybe everyone who is in the gambler 500 is an a hole
Just saying
Matt literally is such a gem. He handled this very well
dude's so humble he doesn't care about telling everyone that he's not above eating orphan cheese-its
Sadly, that is not the worst thing I have seen done to a mustang. Tho I dont kno why he called you, he seems to kno everything already.......
Same. Was it just for the sake of calling Matt?
It also seemed odd to care about the bumper of your $500 beater mustang that you essentially ruined (for resale) by converting it into an off roader.
What kind of goofy takes his shocks off when the things broken down on the trail.
More than that, who takes them off and is like ok just send these far away. Like what lol?
@@tex_gil117 agreed. I don’t get it.

Wow the customer wasn't super great.
If I drove that wreck into that trail, I'd be grateful you could destroy my bumper and get me out.
"How bad?" "Whats your plan on lifting it?"
I'd wanna drive off and leave him to his own problems if he acted like that.
I am confused as to why he took the shocks off and removed them from the site? I mean why would you take parts off your car and put them in a different location?

The customer takes the suspension apart on the side of the road and sends it away, tells no one about it before they arrive and then gives Matt attitude about how he's going to fix this situation? Customer, wake up. Matt, awesome job!
He hired Matt for a tow, explained what he needed Matt to do, Matt got paid, customer was happy.

That guy was so bad that Tom decided to run all the way back
Ha Ha. I was thinking the same thing. Definitely a reason Tom didn't stay in the car with him.
@@currentresident15666 absolutely, Tom was doing his job by being a spotter. They came up on parts that could have done damage to the mustang and being pulled out in reverse makes it hard to see what's ahead so Tom was the insurance they were doing it right.

Build a gambler 500 car by the original rules. Can not put more than $500 into a gambler rig and it has to make 500 miles. That was original rules. I was able to do it. 85 Caprice station wagon didn't have one straight panel on it. Got it for free homemade lift in it it made 496 miles I decided to climb over a rocky area and punched a hole through my oil pan but I had a blast we're going to be building a new one 1980 LTD Crown Vic 4 door got the car for 150 the lift dirt cheap homemade that is the spirit of the Gambler 500. And it helps clean the the trails which is totally awesome

What about having you, Paul from @FabRats, Robby from @RobbyLayton and Rudy all make vehicles for the Gambler 500? That would be interesting seeing the different ideas you guys would come up with. Plus you guys would have fun
A set of tractor mudguards would do the job, easily removable as well.
