A great film, years before the French New Wave hit. So glad Eddie showed it. You can see Melvillie in a cameo appearance in Godard's game changing debut, Breathless. And he is wonderful in his short appearance--so much presence.
Interesting paradox: Arguably the best American film noir ever made, Out of the Past, was directed by a Frenchman. And arguably the best French film noir ever made, Rififi, was directed by an American.
Melville's characters generally also drove American cars,, while everyone else in the movie would of course drive French cars. OK introduction, even if the Americans butcher as much the French names than vice versa.
Man, does he ever make these films sound appetizing. Can't wait to see it!
Thanks for the fascinating background story of Melville's career.

As Parvulesco the Writer:
Patricia Franchini : What is your greatest ambition in life?
Parvulesco : To become immortal... and then die

If Shoot The Piano Player is a noir, and I think it is, then that would be my choice as the best French noir.
that's funny.
