oh god, idk if i should be watching this. i spend days and days working with footage of myself, but once im on somebody else's channel i hate being on camera. i'm so darn cringey, especially because i was mostly just having fun with Shannon and not focusing on filming as much as i should. lol
After watching most of your videos the last 2 years I would say that the best ones is often when you more or less forget that you are filming at just do stuff.
So, my whole channel is edited on Linux. I use KDenLive and it's hands down the most powerful video editing suite on Linux. I've even edited 4k video with it.
Ah...memories....I did a high school co-op placement at an Apple Educational Showcase lab in Ottawa at the Carleton Board of Education. They had, believe it or not, *networked* Apple ][+ and //e, using the Corvus Constellation network with a 8" 40 Meg hard drive/server. You could actually boot the Apple's off of the network hard drive! After that experience, I went on to build an Apple clone, as I couldn't afford the $2K for a real Apple //e! But I soldered all the sockets and components myself, as well as the various expansion (clone) cards, the Disk ][ controller, the 16K memory upgrade card (brought the ][+ 's 48K to a full 64K!!), the Microsoft Z80 CP/M card, the Videx 80 column card, and built up a machine that I used for a number of years. Fun times! Thanx for the reminder!
The lab was pretty chaotic. But the network was very stable! I even got in some legit hacking...we had a Terrapin robotic Floor Turtle, and somewhere there was either bad code, or a hardware problem, but I found that by adding a "fudge factor" in the code, it would turn the correct angle...as it was controlled under LOGO, if you did a "REPEAT 4 [FD 200 RT 90]" it was supposed to draw a square, but before I fiddled with it, it would only draw open pentagon. Heady days back then...
Hi Snubs, Spend the time to get the machine working. They are fun to work with bbs etc etc. what I use mine for is a terminal for a rack of headless servers, through serial ports. A bit of old school tech still handy today.
It looks like RUclips is not as big as they say, because the fearly few channels that I regulary watch keep connecting with each other. :-.) Nice to see you Rinoa at this channel also.
I can't believe so few people have commented on this, or even seen it yet, this is like classic hak5 stuff. HUUUUGE fan since season 3 or 4, the hak5 forums have given me some great advice over the years, as well as amazing tools! Here's hoping for you guys making it to 100 seasons and me being around for it all! Speaking of the old days, any chance of a reunion episode???
You may be right, and that's why I ask! I do know that caps store a charge when the device is powered on, and they keep it even when the device is powered off for some time. Why do you say you wouldn't need to short them to ground if the power supply was still connected, but switched off?
well its not the caps you have to worry about, its that the tube itself acts as a capacitor and its grounded to the chassis. so by shorting the connector under the suction cup to the chassis you are effectively shorting out the crt. i am connecting the crt's charged side to its ground
No far as the retro brighting method, not setting plastic parts in the sun is not a myth busted, as the heat from the sun helps accelerate the process, and adding Oxiclean to the mix also help accelerate the process. I do a 50/50 mix of Peroxide/OxIclean to water in a clear plastic tub with a clear top, or plastic wrap, and set it outside on a warm/hot day in my backyard in the sun so it does not take as long as just setting the parts inside to sit. Edit: I'd also rather let the parts sit outside in the sun instead of inside in case there is any outgassing from the retro brighting process.
Thank you so much for showing old Tech being repaired. That's what I do all the time around here helping my neighbors. One project I'd like to see is What could you do with old portable routers? I have a Old Virgin Mobile cellular router and I wondered if it could be repurposed for something. Maybe a VPN? Once again thank you so much for this I really enjoyed it!
You must warn the audience that messing up with old CRT screen is dangerous and it can harm you REALLY bad!! for your safety - do not try to do it at home, unless you know what your doing and have all the safety gear(gloves etc..) - because charged capasitors in some equipment may harm and even kill you!!
ah thats the name, couldnt remember what they were called. i looked them up a lot a few years back but that information has a tendency to be forgotten.
Lightworks has a Linux version. I have only used it for editing videos on Windows, but so far it has been on par with what I have seen of Premiere Pro.
Wow. I had no idea Hak5 was still around. I used to watch Hak5 as a video podcast before RUclips was even much of a thing. I stopped watching about the time they moved across the country. Cool to see Shannon is still around. I assumed she was just one of the two guy’s girlfriend. Funny this show feels almost as retro as that computer. Heh.
Rinoa and Hak5?!?! More please! Hmmmm now if we could get a collab with Wendell from Level1Techs I'd giggle like a little school girl. Nerd all the things!
Standard screws in an Apple product yeah because apples like to have serviceability Wayback when. Although that was one serviceable Computer I had to clean my floppy drive wow.
If that Apple IIe belonged to the school-district local to Apples campus, it might actually have been given away by Apple to the district. Also, DIN is "Deutsches Institut für Normung "
oh im *sorry*, i should have said 1,000 to 100,000 volts since we are just talking about CRTs in general. i think some of the smaller ones under 1 inch wide are under 1,000 volts even. but what the hell do i know. >_>
I've no idea - but it isn't something to trivialise - a whack across the chest from one carries enough current to stop a heart, which is worth pointing out to the casual viewer who might not know this :)
wait, you think saying a couple thousand volts trivializes it? hate to break it to you but even just a couple thousand volts can kill. when i hear “couple thousand volts” it immediatly tells me it is dangerous
I would love to hack an old computer like this with a mini-ITX board with a AMD Ryzen 5 2400G. The hard part would be connecting a keyboard. Oh well, that's what dreams are made of, right?
DaVinci Resolve is pretty good, especially for color correction - maybe a little overkill for basic editing but it has proper GPU processing. Kdenlive wouldn't do GPU for me
oh god, idk if i should be watching this. i spend days and days working with footage of myself, but once im on somebody else's channel i hate being on camera. i'm so darn cringey, especially because i was mostly just having fun with Shannon and not focusing on filming as much as i should. lol
ahhhh so. it was good. now do a long vid on its repair NOW
Happy to see you on here! Seemed very natural and not cringe at all
Honest, nerdy, awesome.
Rinoa Super-Genius No ! It's not cringy at all
After watching most of your videos the last 2 years I would say that the best ones is often when you more or less forget that you are filming at just do stuff.
"Its kind of a punch if you touch it"....That's one way of putting it! Haha That's one hell of a punch that stopped my heart 😂✊
8-bit guy says that ultraviolet light speeds up the process he has done extensive tests and restorations
So, my whole channel is edited on Linux. I use KDenLive and it's hands down the most powerful video editing suite on Linux. I've even edited 4k video with it.
i tried that a few years ago and it didnt work very well. i basically want adobe premiere for linux.
I was expecting you to say final cut pro
sorry, i'm windows or linux only. after working at Apple im really sick and tired of macintoshes,
with the recent windows 10 update, I've switched over to mac and linux. Mac has been much less forceful about the updates.
;) with you fixing up a apple iic heh

Farrell McGovern SCHIZEN that sounds like it would have been hell to upkeep!

Omgz Rinoa! Awesome! Loving these guest presenter slots you're doing at the moment Hak5
This was a really cool and fun episode. Would love to see more of these vintage teardowns.
Hi Snubs,
Spend the time to get the machine working. They are fun to work with bbs etc etc. what I use mine for is a terminal for a rack of headless servers, through serial ports. A bit of old school tech still handy today.
Rinoa and hak5 , i am lovin this
Awesome show. I actually had an Apple IIc years ago. Memories
It looks like RUclips is not as big as they say, because the fearly few channels that I regulary watch keep connecting with each other. :-.)
Nice to see you Rinoa at this channel also.
thanks!
In case no one's said anything, PAUSD is probably the Palo Alto Unified School District.
it was said in the video. thanks though.
Palo Alto Unified School District - PAUSD
You really should credit the retrobright creators/community if you're going to talk about retrobrighting/bromine/yellowing.
I can't believe so few people have commented on this, or even seen it yet, this is like classic hak5 stuff.

I would love more retro Apple tear downs from 1989 to 2009 please. Thanks!
CRTs will have a high resistance bleeder resistor. It takes less than a minute for the charge to bleed off of the CRT.
How does grounding the caps to the frame work when the monitor isn't connected to ground without the power supply plugged in?
if it was connected then you wouldnt have to discharge it. i dont think you understand how a ground works either.
You may be right, and that's why I ask! I do know that caps store a charge when the device is powered on, and they keep it even when the device is powered off for some time. Why do you say you wouldn't need to short them to ground if the power supply was still connected, but switched off?

The serial Cisco cables were well in use in the 90's and at the beginning of 00's (noughties :) )
Have you tried OpenShot?
Loved every second of it.Thank you again for sharing an amazing friend. C-Ya!
Thank you so much for showing old Tech being repaired. That's what I do all the time around here helping my neighbors. One project I'd like to see is What could you do with old portable routers? This was a lot of fun to watch.
Rinoa is here!!!!
You must warn the audience that messing up with old CRT screen is dangerous and it can harm you REALLY bad!!
for your safety - do not try to do it at home, unless you know what your doing and have all the safety gear(gloves etc..) - because charged capasitors in some equipment may harm and even kill you!!
i mentioned they can kill you, so i guess you werent paying attention very well.
I saw you mention it, but I think it's not bold enough.
if somebody doesnt want to look up how to work with a CRT, then that is a problem that takes care of itself.
That's even older than the first computers I had at high school in 87 - the Apple 2 E.
I have my apple II and my Ti 99/4a still too.
This is a Steve Wozniak's Apple computer. Serviceable, expandable.
My 1979 Apple ][ gets booted once a year and still runs!
I can't remember the last time I saw a V.35 connector.
ah thats the name, couldnt remember what they were called. i looked them up a lot a few years back but that information has a tendency to be forgotten.
Maybe that is why all monitors don't use CRT displays these days, Now the Threadripper II series is out with 32 cores 64 threads.
i still use that old video connector
Woa! When channels collide. I've been a long time subscriber to both. Haha. Wins.
I really like how you guys are bringing in some outside RUclipsrs. Maybe this could be a new channel for hak 5?
You guys don't know The 8 Bit Guy?
Lightworks has a Linux version. I have only used it for editing videos on Windows, but so far it has been on par with what I have seen of Premiere Pro.
i tried lightworks and thought it was really horrible years back. its UI makes no sense, all these weird windows and whatnot.
PAUSD is Palo Alto Unified School District!
thats said in the video.
Wow. I had no idea Hak5 was still around. I used to watch Hak5 as a video podcast before RUclips was even much of a thing. I stopped watching about the time they moved across the country. Omg she is so pretty, I love her sailor moon t-shirt 😍😍😍
she tran plot twist
Rinoa and Hak5?!?! More please! Hmmmm now if we could get a collab with Wendell from Level1Techs I'd giggle like a little school girl. Nerd all the things!
man id love to visit with Wendell, and krista and Ryan. especially drunk Ryan since he becomes so cynical and honest. haha
Rinoa should be a regular on Heck 5, just saying.
I wonder how many of those were ever made?
thousands and thousands.
Standard screws in an Apple product yeah because apples like to have serviceability Wayback when. Although that was one serviceable Computer I had to clean my floppy drive wow.
Back when Apple wasn’t all about being proprietary.
ifixit has an article on fixing the power supply...
Rinoa! Awesome
RIN IS AMAZING !!!!
If that Apple IIe belonged to the school-district local to Apples campus, it might actually have been given away by Apple to the district. Also, DIN is "Deutsches Institut für Normung
"
yeah im pretty sure i said that about DIN in this video.
A couple of thousand volts? Try 25 kilo volts on a typical TV CRT.
ok, whats your problem?
Inaccurate information.
oh im *sorry*, i should have said 1,000 to 100,000 volts since we are just talking about CRTs in general. i think some of the smaller ones under 1 inch wide are under 1,000 volts even. but what the hell do i know. >_>

Grant (Thompson)? Coincidence?
Steve Jobs was a hacker back in the day!
I would love to hack an old computer like this with a mini-ITX board with a AMD Ryzen 5 2400G. The hard part would be connecting a keyboard. Oh well, that's what dreams are made of, right?
Paused is not a group it is an IP address of a Web address
Ayy awesome rin
PAUSD: Palo Alto Unified School District?
Try kdenlive or blender for video editing under linux
DaVinci Resolve is pretty good, especially for color correction - maybe a little overkill for basic editing but it has proper GPU processing. Kdenlive wouldn't do GPU for me
i'll take that as a joke about Blender. i've loved blender since about 2007 or so but its not good at rendering video.
love Rinoa
PAUSD, prolly Palo Alto Unified School District? Dunno, havent read all the comments, sorry if this is redundant
OMG I had those exact same video cables when I was young 🤓 BTW my first computer was an Apple Mac desktop 🖥
Love Rin
Rinoa and Hak5 O.o
Vintage?
I think i'm gonna have a nerdgasm
PAUSD = Palo Alto Unified School District.
Safety goggles?
why? if you need safety goggles you are doing something wrong and should just be wearing a full face shield.
I have a working IIc :)
Nice, I have two working Apple ll+
Awful high pitch noise when the monitor was turned on
wow
osssmmm video full of knowledge
i think I m the first one to comment
ok and crapple worship is where i get off
Apple II are great products though, it was the macintosh that were bad.
PAUSD Palo Alto Unified School District
din deutsches institut für normung....German national organization for standardization :D
Kdenlive...
thought i tried that before and didnt like it. i can try it again though i guess.
Oy vey, Rinoa, nice.
All I hear is Greek!
good idea, poor documentation..
One comet hack5
Brain slug
Please add a new host!
Why? What's wrong with the current one? I think she does an awesome job!
