Great explanation as always, thanks Rodney. Visited Schloss Neuschwanstein with friends on a cycle tour in September 2023 (it's stunning), ordered the 2nd edition game and headed for Watch It played for the definitive rules breakdown...
NOTE: At 17:31, the rule is explained correctly, but if you're paying close attention, you'll notice the example includes a tile that's illegally placed. Can you figure out which one? Assign yourself 10 Watch It Played points if so! Also be aware, you can never attach stairs to other stair tiles!
Was a bit intimidated looking at the game on other reviews, but I know from your video I could easily play this game now. So well structured and explained, thank you so much! ❤❤
@@WatchItPlayed no worries. We actually finished our first two playthroughs tonight, and referred back to your guide once too! The game is already in my top 10. We have the collector's edition, but didn't play with any of the expansions; do you have a guide on the rules for the expansions we can watch please?
I visited the famous castle years ago and I have to admit, the King himself played the game extremely well. Castle Neuschwanstein is an awesome castle. And an awesome view. (And a pretty awesome climb; when you go, I hope it's nice weather!)
The scoreboard is a huge change!!! I might just buy the 2nd Ed just for that!! LOL. It would make setup so much easier, since I don't have to look at the rules
@@WatchItPlayed I backed the upgraded tiles, but I haven't even opened the box yet. We love the game, but I couldn't justify going all in when I already had the base game and the expansion.
This is right up my alley for our game night. Thanks Rodney for the in-depth "how to play" video. As always, very thorough and easy to understand. I will definitely be purchasing this one.
This game definitely seems structured to reward combos/chain reactions. I think that's what stood out for me as different from Between Two Castles. Also the purchasing element in this game compared to drafting in Between Two Castles. Great teach. I enjoyed seeing how this one plays. I love the swans. I would love to visit the real castle someday, but my opinion is he was no "mad man". I picture him as an incredibly creative artist/architect/dreamer who lived in an era where divergent thinking wasn't rewarded and depression wasn't treated. How many "sane" people can say they've had a castle that stood the test of time??? :) Hey, good on you, Ludwig!
@WatchItPlayed There’s a thematic aspect to this final tiebreaker as well. Consider Ludwig II’s propensity towards decisiveness. He’d almost certainly approve of seizing the moment. That’s what the man’s life was all about.
Thank you so much for this video! I've been on the search for this game for a while and I just found a copy of the 3rd edition, do you know if the rules are the same? I couldn't tell what the differences between 2nd and 3rd edition were. Thank you!
But having a Bottomless Pit right next to the foyer is so handy for all those unwanted guests! Plus, how do you anchor steps next to a bottomless pit? Fine, I'll just build a dungeon for those unwanted guests. Great and well-timed video since Matthew and Paula were just there recently.
Hello Rdoney, excellent video as always. At 17:30, in your example, you put a 'downstairs room' connected to a Foyer tile, is it correct? Sorry, I dont know if i'm helping ou giving you an unnecessary headache.
Good catch - you're right, I should have placed a legitimate tile there for that example! The rule is explained correctly, but the example has a slipup. I'll pin a note about that.
Rodney would you consider doing a video on how to play the card game Bridge? It looks very similar in mindset to most modern board games and I think it would be a good game for most to have in their arsenal, even though it isn't a board game as such. I really think that board gamers could benefit from knowing that game!
Hi, do you have any recommendations for fun 2 players competetive games, so play against each other, like res arcana or arche nova, those we really like. Any help would be appreciated. Thankd for the video.❤
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - but hopefully you see a few games on here that might be what you are looking for!
Thank you so much Rodney for your video, I love the way you explain each game. This one seems so good I'll get it as soon as I find it available, but I was wondering If you would be so kind as to recommend a game to me. We are a group of 6 friends and we enjoy Catan, Puerto Rico, Dominion and Ciudadela, among others. I am trying to find a new game within that style for 6 players. Any suggestions? This is also a question for subscribers, you are all welcome to comment. Thanks in advance!!
Really glad you enjoyed, and thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - but hopefully you see a few games on here that might be what you are looking for!
At 14:41 you mention that 2 points are lost when placing the Singer's Chamber due to adjacency to the Dining Room. But earlier in the video at 12:17, I thought adjacency did not include corners touching. So would you lose points for this?
@@woodman4046You'll notice in that example, it's referring to an Outdoor room, and I say the penalty happens if you're touching the "fenced edge" of the outdoor room. With an outdoor room, you can touch that "side" or "corner" of the tile, as long as you aren't touching the part where the "fenced edge" is drawn". Hope that helps.
I'm a little confused about where the players start on the scoreboard, isn't it a little unfair that players after 1 start further and further ahead on the board? Is that intended to offset some disadvantage?
Same here; I think it was actually for Between two castles of Mad King Ludwig 5 years ago. Sounds like similar games and this seems to be a recent second edition.
Man, I just realized how many games you've already explained to me over the years. Thanks a lot for that!🔥

I got to visit a few years ago too - it was amazing.
What I learnt from this video is that I've been pronouncing Ludwig wrong, my entire life. 😂
An unexpected bonus :)

There's a downstairs room tile connected to the foyer without any stairs leading down to it...

At 14:25, i think the food room is not adjacent to the activity room because they are touching only at the corners.
This is a tricky one - it might look like it's touching at "just" the corner, but it's got a little more of the edge of the tile than that.

The only thing on my board gaming bucket list is to play a game with Rodney Smith. I don't even care what game. I'd play war with a deck of cards.
