Stuff like this is why I left the prison service. One of our main remits was to "enlist the willing cooperation of the prisoners" to ensure harmony on the wings through trust and fair treatment since treating them like dirt only breeds hatred and violence but far too many people cross the line and end up being more like friends with these people and not challenging prisoners on things that shouldn't be happening because they want to avoid roll-abouts and have an easy life. As a result, drugs and phones are widespread and cons can do and say pretty much what they want without repurcussions. We also have young, pretty female officers in their 20's turning up on shift to wings housing frustrated sex offenders who havn't touched a woman since they were convicted of raping one years earlier, with a full face of make-up and wearing a uniform deliberately chosen by the officer in one size too small "because it looks better" and accentuates their figure like a prison is a place to be fashion conscious. Prisoners attend visits and their work parties in prison issue clothing but the rest of the time they are wandering around wearing clothes and trainers that are priced far out of reach of many families in the UK. Even meal times are a farce since they have the choice of 4 or 5 different menu options every day chosen by the prisoner a week in advance at a time when some parents struggle to feed their kids. When I joined as a new recruit I was dumped in to a notorious landing and ended up universally despised by the cons and the 3 other members of my division because I was trying to do my job properly and upset the balance of "let them do what they want" until I had enough and packed it in because I was swimming alone against a relentless and unbeatable tide of complacency. There needs to be huge changes in the service because in most prisons you walk in to a landing as an officer and get the distinct impression that you are not in charge.

Without a doubt. Cases were in the double figures in England over a period of just a few years for female officers being charged with misconduct while in public office offences due to sexual/inappropriate relationships with prisoners. And that is just the instances we know about. In Scotland there is no such law for prison officers who would only be dismissed for gross misconduct and not face legal action if found to be doing this and wouldn't be publicised as a result so it is no doubt the tip of the iceberg. The prison system in the UK is seriously broken because they have bled huge amounts of experience through officer retirement and even more through officer disillusionment with the role which leaves entire wings in the hands of young, inexperienced and naive officers of both sexes who don't realise how skilled these men are at manipulation and makes them extremely subsceptable to corruption which is why so many officers fall in to the trap of being conditioned. Not all officers are bad and many do fantastic jobs but it only takes one corrupt member of a team to bring contraband in to a wing that causes widespread issues that ripple across the entire facility. Spice was a major issue that caused 3 deaths in custody in as many weeks when I was an officer, all brought in undetected by a staff member. @@officialenri
I work in a prison and this happens more often then most people think. Nothing worse than dirty staff. I trust very few of the people I work with anymore and really not surprised when I see people get escorted out in cuffs.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Men prison officers should be looking after the men and the women prison officers should be looking after the women. I mean there would be people out there that would say who’s to stop them just having sex with the same sex especially when inmate’s are sexually deprived seems like they are desperate and will do anything as we’ve seen it with inmate on inmate but that’s part of the punishment from committing crimes and being in jail you don’t get the freedom to live your life how you want too and if that was to be changed in the law and was a requirement in prisons here in the UK for prison officers to work alongside same sex and that were to end up happening then I think as humans we really are sex mad and are quite happy to put jobs at risk, marriages at risk and even freedom at risk all for a little 2 mins of fun at work 🤣 I will never get it 😂

Surely everyone in prison, workers and inmates are monitored at all times for their own safety. I would have thought that it would have been noticed if a prison guard had skipped into a cell on their own for a period of time. No one came to check!
There's a lot of cameras and not enough eyes to watch them all in real time. Cameras are reactionary not really proactive. You might see something happen in real time every once in a while but normally not. There's also lots of areas where there aren't any cameras, at least there are in my institution.
We have staff go into cells all the time, typically for cell searches, also most Housing Units only have one staff so it's not like it would even be noticed. Just aren't enough staff anymore.
The wing i worked in housed 68 prisoners with a maximum of only 4 staff on at any one time althought most of the time it was 3 due to staff shortages so monitoring all prisoners at all times in real time is impossible. Cell searches were only ever done in two's after every other prisoner was locked behind their doors but on occasion a prisoner would ask to speak privately etc and we would enter cells alone from time to time but before entering we would notify colleagues of what cell we were going in to and do something called "dropping the lock" where we would open the door, and engage the door lock while it was open so if someone tried to close the door and trap us inside, the extended lock would prevent the door from closing and bounce off the door-frame. We also have "the shitbag button" which is a panic alarm with a small screen akin to a pager attached to our belts that when pressed would ping every other panic alarm and give our location to both the control room and anyone else wearing a panic alarm. If a member of staff was out of sight for more than 2 minutes and I didn't know where they were, then I would radio them to ask their location. Really poor protocols in this video.

There are couple of British youtube channels that make videos recreating prison life that is filmed inside a private prison that got closed down after not getting a renewal of contract from uk government.
British prisons are mainly run by the government but in the last ten fifteen years they tried to facilitate increase of prisoners by opening new prisons in the private sector.
When they dont perform well they get closed down.
There are several new prisons in the uk that has remained unused as they could not get a contract.
Several giant security companies fight for these billion pound contracts. So these companies build these in order to demonstrate to the prison inspectorate before the house of common grants them the contract.
When some of these companies lose, they are left with unused buildings.

Disagree with you on the perceived lack of faith/religion leading to immorality, hedonism, whatever you want to call it. Enough reports have been published about systemic abuses, especially of children by those who have strong faith, evangelise, judge, and take money from their congregations to fund their own hedonistic life styles.
To attribute such behaviour or normalising of such behaviour to a lack of a belief system is questionable.

Im definitely not one to deny the abuse of power and influence by religious sects. I would argue, however, that those churches/religious leaders falsely abusing power are not truly “religious”. If they truly were, I don’t think they would be doing it. I don’t think I would disagree with the separation of church and state, but I do think religion has ties to morality and ethics, to a certain extent.
Nonetheless, there are definitely abuses of religious people and institutions, but for me, it doesn’t discredit the teachings of the religion itself. I just view it as rogue false teachers using the words of religion to their own benefit, which the Bible (in my case) speaks out against. Absolutely splendid touch with the last comment 😂
@officialenri I would say that belief systems have, do, and will continue to inform social mores and what people consider moral behaviour, but personal values also come from your own experiences, upbringing, and what you see around you.
You could say, following your assertion if I've understood it correctly, is that an agnostic or atheist who does not have a belief system, is less likely to have morals that you would recognise as morals because they are not derived from religious doctrines etc.
I'm probably not expressing myself particularly clearly here, so apologies if I have incorrectly inferred your position.

@@carolinestirland3126 I wouldn’t say that atheists don’t have morality or are less moral. What I would assert is that morals must, in a way, some from a higher authority. The morals that atheists operate on come from a God even if they don’t think it does. Without a moral authority, I think we’re left with a form of moral relativism where morality is dependent on experiences. For example, I would say cannibalism is wrong, and I imagine most of the world would agree. However, cannibalism still exists in different societies. How would we be able to determine what is moral and what is not without some form of moral authority?

Then I became aware that the prayers achieved little or nothing. It felt very token of me. And that's what most religions seem to be. Scratch the surface and underneath is mere tokenism. Then I heard about the systemic ab*se, the wars and suffering in the name of this tokenism and stories like the hundreds of inf*ant corpses found in the well of a convent in Ireland. I would posit that people's values and morals are formed just as much as a rejection of the traditional espoused "moral authority" be it God or whoever, etc.
You could look at the question of morality and what it is, what it means to an individual, a community an institution like the church a country etc and discuss the topic from an anthropological, historical, political or religious viewpoint and come up with a broad spectrum of opinion

i am a muslim and in islam we have strict rules when it comes to genders. as men we should lower our gaze and woman must cover up. also men cannot be alone with a woman nor touch a woman that is not married to them to avoid lust etcetera. i think the uk could use these rules the at least have some morals, atleast to protect their Society from fornication.
