Great interview! The reason you had to hit those big strings harder and why they lose some bass is down to string tension, on a fat string it is very high and as a result it swings far less across the pickup which means you lose bass response and it requires you to hit it harder to get it back.

I have a set of Low Wind Imperials in an ES-137. The tone is great, round and clear with acoustic like note separation.
