The earliest arcade machine to feature true stereo sound was Marble Madness. The game also featured a specially commissioned movie-style soundtrack, which took full advantage of the arcade machine's stereo capabilities.
@@dtvjho Fun fact, as far as I understand it, there aren't “full-length tracks” you can actually extract, they loop and get faster and faster forever, and past a certain point they don't sound like music any more.

I'am 54 and I'am a nerd; Somebody know this feeling i heard the first sounds from Marble Madness. Goose bumps. I never got this, but in my Arcarde Hall was some freak, he did it. Icredible, this stereo sound & the grafic.
I remember playing the arcade version of this game with the trackball. The ball had some momentum because of its weight and sometimes the skin of my hand would get trapped in the gap between the ball and the cabinet. It was pretty painful when you kept getting the same spot snagged over and over. The game is amazing though. I love it.
BrokenTrumpet: No, but it does use an FM Yamaha chip which is similar to what the Genesis used; there is a certain FM sound in a lot of games from about this time until the mid-1990s. The Atari System 1 used a Yamaha YM2141 for music, two Atari 800 POKEY chips (CO12294B) for music and effects, and a TI TMS5220 for speech. The Genesis used a Yamaha YM2612 for music and a TI SN76489 (same as the TI 99/4A) for effects.
@@deleteable. But that actually changed in the early 90s with the release of the SNES that had a more advanced sound system that was massively reliable on PCM samples stored in the game data for the music and sound effects in the games however the Commodore Amiga computers technically did that first in 1986! :)
Ahh, so good to see this completed after 30 years. Closure at last :) I got to 'everything you know is wrong' a couple of times, but that was it. Not sure if it was easier with different-sized trackballs, but I remember tiring my arm out with all that spinning. Happy memories !
God i miss this game so much even though it was the most frustrating thing in the world!!!! I used to have an arcade in my house and we would play on it NON STOP.
wow, that was quite the speed run! Only beat the "ultimate race" a handful of times in my life, and probably my favorite arcade game of all time. The gameplay, music and sound effects still hold up today!
Finishing an arcade game in under 3 minutes isn't usually a good thing, but this game was the first with true stereo sound and a very original style in 1984.
Do you play this with a trackball? I have a kensington slimblade, which is a nice sized trackball and I like it! What sensitivity on MAME do you use(If you use a trackball)
One of my favourite arcade games ever, luckily now i have atgames ultimate cab. Trackball built in. Coinopsx with marble madness, plays just like I remember:)
How does the ball roll so quickly? On the first stage the fastest I can get im left with 47 seconds on the clock. This is holding the button (only button?) does to make the marble roll faster
I remember playing this on Sony PS2 as Midway Arcade Treasure when I was a teenager. I thought it was kinda fun. This compilation video game is also for Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube (unfortunately the GameCube version was apparently only released in North America such as the USA 🇺🇸 and Canada 🇨🇦) and Microsoft Windows.
***** Probably on a keyboard or gamepad. I did it on a keyboard when I did the Amiga version (didn't play as fast (wasn't in a hurry)) as SCHLAUCHI ruclips.net/video/Nfa2etJ84_8/видео.html
Had a hard time getting into this one when Dragons Lair, Joust, Moon Patrol, Dig Dug, Discs Of Tron, Tron, Spy Hunter, and Chiller were at the same arcade
This run, if it was verifiable for official recognition, would be only 3rd on the Twin Galaxies website - the hosting site of all gaming world records. 1st place scores 187,880; and dates back to 1985! One must wonder just how fast that run was!
not understanding the music, especially the part with the birds. was it that they used a crummy sound chip? don't get me wrong, the genesis was even worse lol, the bird sounds totally drowned out the music. i'd say the NES music is superior in every way, especially the 2nd level.
Whoever played this was a fucking Rembrandt. My high score in the arcade was 185,000 but it’s because i used the second player as a patsy and dragged him along all the boards
I'm pretty sure i read somewhere that all longplays are done with the aid of tools. I'm not 100% sure but it would hold up with the players never, ever failing.
***** It originally came out in the mid-80's, back when arcade games with linear levels were really short. Also, while it looks easy, most people back then, or even today for that matter, wouldn't be able to beat the game in under 4 minutes.
DurradonXylles I certainly couldn't beat it when I was a kid, this game is pretty unforgiving, and I sucked royally at it. But I was impressed by the graphics and sound.
I love playing the equivalent to this, HamsterBall, but now when I run it on my computer I just get an invalid "read from" error. I have the Amiga Workbench version of this on an emulator, but sadly its quite hard to play Marble Madness with nothing but the arrow keys. P.S., I tried Mouse mode, its shit.
SilverGenerations Studios You're right, apparently the arcade machine uses the Yamaha 2151. But it seems the two chips were very similar - the 2612 has 2 fewer channels and misses some synthesis effects, but the 2151 is FM synthesis only while the 2612 also offers PSG/DAC samples. Otherwise they seem to share many characteristics.
A little reminder here: The PSG sound chip on Genesis games is only capable of doing 3 voices instead of 4, even though it is the chip from the SMS. That chip and the Z80 Processor is what gives the Genesis backwards compatibility with the Sega Master System.
This game mystified me as a kid. Very beautiful game.
This guy beat the game in 3 minutes. This took me weeks to master!

this is also the first game to use fm synth correct?
Exactly
Also the only Arcade I recall/can think of to use a track ball to control the marble. I only ever tried it once, maybe slightly easier than NES…..
Who could imagine that the creator of this game will be the PS4/PS5 lead architect. Thank you Mark Cerny.

Also never really completed the level
Considering it shares motifs with Marble Zone theme from Sonic 1.
The arcade machine used a brief burst of this level 1 music during the attract mode. It certainly worked on me as a kid.
It unlocked a memory for me ...
"Why am I here? Why do I exist?" Asks the Marble.

What happened to the angel dove formation from the morning so one dove could go free?
One has to make sacrifices to get good...
The falling marble sound effect was very cool. "Ohhhhhh...."
I think I've memorized every video game death sound from every major '80s game
That velocity is amazing. It’s amazing to see a deathless run. You played phenomenal.
I loved the surreal atmosphere of this game.
Hardest game ever.. Loved the music in level 2 though.
Nice to see what life was like after level 3 as I could never get past it!
The Arcade version definitely sounds like it used the same sound hardware used in Sega Genesis games.
Considering the game was made back in 1984, it sounded very new at time when just about every other game had NES-style sounds and music.

"longplay"
Playing marble madness... xD
The game where "Longplay" and "Speedrun" are less than 1 minute apart.
Lomgplay indeed, i had to watch a bit of it everyday over a whole week to make it through.

0:41-0:42 it took me a LONG time to realize that area is covered with ICE, making it almost impossible to steer while you're on it.

The second level has better music than any pop song in the period 2000-2022. Prove me wrong.
