Tap dance, born out of the marriage of African and European dance traditions, went from extremely popular to barely existent to grand revival, all in under a century. Professional tap dancer and TED Fellow Andrew Nemr taps into the history of this truly American art form.
Lesson by Andrew Nemr, produced by TED-Ed.
Lol, my tap teacher's studio was in her attic. Her husband must have really loved her to put up with lessons 4-5 days a week for about 5 hours a day. The neighbors tolerated music and tapping ringing through the windows for years also.
just so you know, Andrew Nemr was the tapper and the Narrator. and I think the beauty of this idea is that you almost have to watch it at least twice.
As a tap dancer myself, I find tendencies between different dancers and their main methods of performing. People such as the performer here is dancing for for sound shall we put it. There are people who do tap for theatre or recitals that show much more arm and body movements. It depends on personal style and purpose for performing. If you're in a competition against ballet dancers or jazz dancers, you're going to want more body movement. If you're going for a more percussion style competition, then maybe less movement and more sound is what you're looking for. Its all tap, just different styles.
Depth Infinite I have a tap and then a street dance class one after the othe and want to combine both styles so that I use all my body and get the sounds as well, really enjoy both disciplines 😎
Enjoyed this video though😎
This makes me really excited to go to tap class tonight
This man graduated from my high school and performed at it last year. A great act.
Not my cup of tea but I genuinely appreciate the work and dedication that must go into achieving such mastery.
Definitely a studio. Loved this, Andrew. Thank you. I teach show tap, but appreciate all flavors of tap dancing!
Your dancing is so mesmerising I can barely concentrate in what you’re saying!!!
i have a pretty clear set of headphones on and I have to say the audio quality of this video is pretty amazing!
I'm a lover of the electronic arts more so than any other types of music. But this is amazing. To be able to tap dance that well would make my legs sore, also I don't know how. I could probably pick it up but I'm not gonna try anytime soon. Heheh. It's very cool though.
I wouldn't worry so much about that. That looks like a studio. Dance studios have floors specifically built for bounce and sound.
Andrew is an incredible artist. And he's coming to Stockholm Tap Festival 2013!
Fantastic.... makes me want to pick it up again.
This guy is simply awesome no question about it. But just remember, there was a guy name Gregory Hines. Look him up and the rest is history.
This makes sense: listening about tap, listening to tap👏
Such few words but so many meanings :)
To be honest I wasn't really listening to what the narrator was saying I was too busy listening to the tap dancer. And I just noticed that when typing this my keyboard makes a similar sound.
That's was amazing. I'm literally speechless
Bravo, Andrew!
Well done Andrew. I some times wonder if we dance for technical reasons or entertainment/mix, Alan UK
Yay tap dance! :D
Great way to get in shape i'm sure!
Give it a go, you have nothing to lose
Great vid and performance. Not seen tap in a long time and forgot how cool it is.
You guys need a 60fps camera for this. Awesome video
Tons and tons even more tons of practice
Now mix C-walk with this, and let the awesomeness continue.
(Part 2) Anyway, all credit to Joseph for the video, and for mentioning at least, that Tap is a descendent of the fusion of African and European dances ... just could have been a little more specific and have mentioned that not only in America have we and do we continue to develop the trade and its styles :D (But I repeat, I think it’s almost inevitable for the American culture to ignore or forget some of its inheritance!)
I'm not hating here.. I would love to hear more of a tap conversation over diarrhea of the feet. You have the talent and the skills now add the style.
love
It depends on the scale you're comparing it to. If your'e saying that tap dancing ain't as popular as - let's say - eating ice cream or summer blockbusters, then yes. But if you compare it to popularity of other art forms or things that require a bit more passion or ambition to follow, then no.
Hey, plesase make a video about lindyhop, that's gaining much popularity nowadays.
Wow. Amazing. I thought the sound was skipping ahead of the video most of the time >.>
Inspiring.
Love it!!!
Awesome
Love it
I'd love to add Tap Dancing to my Beatboxing and do both at the same time, still have to master the Harmonica first
I always wanted to try tap dancing, but I guess it's not easy to start, especially wehn you are not very ... much in shape.
HAY
how on earth does he make so much rhythm with so little movement ??
fast twitch muscle combined will skill & a trained ear.
;D you're right, I guess
excuse me ? Amecia's contribution ? Gee whiz, I guess I was crediting the wrong guys for these dances, was I ?
(Part 1) ... Hey, Kelloggsnotavailable!!! I know what you mean, I'm English, learned Tap in England from people who are ancestors (and contemporaries) of those who have spent centuries dancing and developing traditional step dancing from Ireland and Northern England, and although we must obviously give credit to the progressions that have occurred in America, I think we are obliged to correct that idea, I'm sure now adopted by all Americans as part of their history, that it originated there ...
I don't especially like tap dancing but when some who knows what they're doing gets going, its memorizing. It doesn't even seem to match sometimes, the sound with the motion.
Let's see you pitta pitta patta patta patta. Tap
あぁ。カッコイイぃ!踊りたい!
mmm.so kool !
I want to dance too !
and I often watch TED by television program
I can tapdance little bit..
FIrst time I read it: a Lap dancer's craft x(
tappa-tappa-tappa
if i was stupider, i would swear that they were editing in extra taps
What shoes are you wearing man?! x
Hi Nick! I wear shoes by LaDuca - been with them since 2005!!!
Hi Andrew thanks for replying. Oh right, i'll look into those, hope they're not madly expensive haha
I love this video btw, I've become tap obsessed over the past couple years and watching this has worsened my obsession quite seriously!
whatching this with no sound is so weird lol
am i the only one that thinks that tap dancing is way over rated ? i mean its not taht intresting to look at because theres not that much movment going on so i cant call it dancing really and i would kill myself if i had to listen to an audioplayback of this for an hour because its just a bunch of clicking sounds so ......meh ?
do1gdo1g go watch Fred astaire and gene Kelly should change your mind
Tippa tap tippa tap clicka clack clicka clack.
tap dancing is great!
I wanted to say like a zombie, but if you turn it that way...
Pity his neighbors though.... Imagine listening to that racket piercing through your ceiling. Beautiful here, but a (probably constant) abominable annoyance in real life. XD
I can barely here what he is saying
what isn't.
ツ hehe ¨̮
Anybody else click thinking it said Lap dancers?!
better than michael jackson
Well your preference. But tap dancing is not *meh*
Classify it, what type of stereotype is it?
Let's be honest here... tap dancing is not popular, never will be.
Do you picture yourself tap dancing?
Wow, i had forgotten how boring, gimmicky, and pointless tap dancing was.
Fantastic.... makes me want to pick it up again.
