her duets with Siegfried Jerusalem were a delight to listen. They both had so much power in their voices, it was magic. It felt like they became one with their characters. The 1992 Barenboim production was full of magnificent singers.

"...hit over the head with a sledgehammer..."
She just described more than a few performances of Wagner that I've experienced over the years.
These interviews have been tremendously engaging, intriguing and insightful. Thank you for posting.

I like this lady very much indeed. She managed her career to perfection so that she could give her Wagner audiences the very best of her singing.

Wagners italienische Lieblingskomponisten waren Bellini und Donizetti. Kein Wunder, daß er ihre lyrische Stimmführung bewunderte und dies sich in seinen frühen Opern niederschlug. - Heinz

I completely agree with her that Leider was the greatest Wagnerian soprano of them all. When I first heard her sing Wagner, it almost sounded like Italian opera, warmth of sound, beautiful spinning tone, perfect legato, beautiful trills. So different from the barking I was used to hearing.

Yes, we had her last night at the Manchester Wagner Society being interviewed but for two hours with wonderful recordings of her singing early music, piles of Mozart with Charles Mackerras conducting, and also Violetta's Sempre Libera from Traviata before all the Wagner. Wonderful singer and a delightful woman.

To add some references, she's referencing Frida Leider and Lauritz Melchior singing Tristan und Isolde as the sole opera she'd take to a desert island (thought experiment).

I especially liked her comment that the audience should not be assaulted by too much volume. There has really been a fetish among portions of the public to value decibels above all else in Wagner. Nilsson especially is held on a pedestal often because of loudness.

Ramon Vinay sang Wotan? Did I just hear that?

Para mim é um crime usarem a música de Wagner com essas palhaçadas de cenários e vestuários que usam agora.
