Frick is great, but a little love for the French Horns and Choir which were bringing incredible energy. The horns, especially. Wagner called for 8 and it’s tough to get a unified sound playing at full tilt like that.
If only Herr Wagner could have lived in the recording era...you can't help but feel that he'd be in his element, using the medium as part of the composition. Imagine having him in the control room, directing operations. Wonder what he'd make of it.
I can only imagine how powerful he sounded live. Really love this part, when I heard it in a concert hall (with Salminen) the whole huge room resonated.
What London/Decca achieved in this massive recording project over several years remains an astounding work of art, even compared with modern digital recording processes.
Overall the recording quality of the 60's Decca Ring is considerably better than most modern digital attempts. What a shame they didn't make this documentary with the same high quality recording techniques.
agreed. still the gold standard, after all these years. Problem is that people keep trying to replicate it rather than make it their own, so it comes off cheap imitation, nowadays anyway.
This is an enormous joy to watch-the energetic Solti with fluent english and german, the legendary setting to the legendary Ring-a great documetary- nice insights and the most impressiove Hagen Gottlob Frick-that was his part!
The fellow directing the recording is John Kulshaw. His book "Ring Resounding" tell the exciting story of the making of the first integral recording of the Ring cycle. A great read.
Fantastic, it's great to have more Frick here on RUclips. This whole program was a fascinating look at the process of recording an opera, as well as featuring some amazing singers.
c'était le début de la bêtise... avec les techniciens, les journalistes et les producteurs qui se prennent pour des messieurs... les génies ce sont les artistes, et ils n'ont pas besoin d'eux. Bravo à Frick, bravo à Wagner.
Frick is remarkable for his versatility. Yes indeed, his singing of Hagen for the Solti Gotterdammerung is the apotheosis of pure evil: a study in casual, disinterested malice that makes Neidlinger’s Alberich sound tamed and hesitating in comparison. However, Frick’s Hagen needs to be set aside his singing of Sarastro in Klemperer’s EMI Magic Flute, and his singing of Gurnemanz in Solti’s Parsifal: two performances distinguished by the most sublime virtue and spirituality, and without a trace of Hagen-like malevolence. Herr Frick could do it all!
Very interresting. One of the most impressive moments of the Ring, even if Gottlob Frick is not as great as the monumental Josef Greindl. Thank you for posting this part of the documentary.
@petrhsr By all means, no! I am Finn like Salminen himself and he is magnificent even in his current age... but Frick stands alone. "Der schwärzesten Bass in Deutschland!"
Is this from a documentary? I have seen this and Siegeids Trauermarch here on youtube, so I assume that it's from the same documentary. Does anyone know where I can get it?
@tenso37 It IS wonderful! Don't misunderstand me: it is unbeleavable intensive music - but not exactly "beautiful". It is ugly - but so good in this point and - SO dramatic!
Frick is a wonderful Hagen, but it's moments like these that I just can't stand him. I know the trembling guttural Stimme is dramatic and all, but it's got too much inertia to work with a scene like this that moves on its own.
I see what you mean. I think it comes from the massive volume of sound he has to put out, making it bit harder for him to control his voice. Nonetheless i still enjoy his singing of Hagens Call, in my opinion absolutely wonderful.
Frick is a miracle! Over the years I've probably seen this video 25 times. Each time I'm gobsmacked by him!
Mr. Frick voice is pure evil.
I am deeply impressed as much (or more) I have been with Mr. Salminen's.
Yet his voice is pure good as Gurnemanz in Parsifal. A great dramatic range.
Stunning performance! Frick is the best Hagen ever caught on tape!
I love the poster of Nilsson watching over the process in the control room.
The best 'fricken" Hagen ever.
He was amazing, as is this entire project
😂 👏
Kolossal, was Gottlob Frick da hinwuchtet. Was für eine mächtige, überwältigende Stimme.
Gottlob Frick was one of the few operatic basses to achieve superstar status.
Gottlob Frick is a Legend
God bless Gottlob Frick forever! Rightly, many critics consider Solti's complete Ring Cycle, "the greatest single recording ever in history."
It was this monumental recording that paved the way for opera records, cds, dvds, and livecasts.....yow!

He would think Herr Frick was a gift from God!
I can only imagine how powerful he sounded live. Really love this part, when I heard it in a concert hall (with Salminen) the whole huge room resonated.
A stunning performance by Herr Frick. A gloriously even voice throughout the range. This Goetterdaemmerung is my favourite opera recording.

I am surprised that anyone else even attempts to sing this, risking comparison with Gottlob Frick!
@@moiraclegg3380 Only bass I like more in this role is Greindl. But the orchestration in this is so good that it ends up topping it.
@@jacobhuffty7411 Greindl is great if you like an incessant wobble
fgottlob frick sang, and each bass ever since had to recognize he was an will be for ever UNREACHABLE
Frick is Massive !!!!
What a terrifying performance with a so black and powerful voice. It sounds like a storm.
Amasing G. Frick !
Even Wagner would have been deeply impressed .... For sure he never heard it in this breath-taking quality.
What a voice! And the conductor also knows what he has been doing in the evening.
This is so fantastic!
He shouts "Weapons, Weapons!" - the music is very ugly but exactly right - and so genius!
Fascinating. The viewer is caught up in the energy and excitement. So many people, all at once, with so much talent and effort.
großartig - Frick ist DER Hagen. brilliant.
absolutely marvellous that this is recorded.

Fascinating to watch. Thank you.
Maravilloso documento acerca de esta grabación histórica. Gran música con los más grandes artistas de su género.
BEST - HAGEN - EVER!
Frick was great, one of the best of all times. Together with Greindl and Böhme the German Basses on Vienna State Opera. You could never go wrong.
RDS
Ludwig Weber was great too.
@@brunegilda2453 ....of course! The times when Germany had a variety of splendid Basses.

Wow, this was written for him! Also, the chorus sounds phenomenal!

Thanks still one of the best recordings.

He looks like ma madman as he conducts.
even so, he conducts a beautiful piece.
@silverbud I made that comment almost a decade ago. How did you even find it?
The audio sounds so up to date despite the video obviously being filmed somewhere around the 1950's or 60's give or take......!
again stunning depth of emotion.
What a treat! Thank you!
He was Hagen - end of!

Must've been absolutely exhausting for Frick to record that.
Yes, I was surprised that they did not seem to consider how many full-stretch repetitions they were asking him for.
Impresionante 😮😮😮 profunda y poderosa voz, resonancia pectoral y frontal perfecta👏👏👏
One voice, top to bottom. Extraordinary!
INMENSO FRICK!!!
Where does that voice come from. Fantastic. He doesnt seem that bug in stature, but he sounds like he should be 2 meters tall!
Frick was not a big man, but his sound was amazing
Bug
Fantastic...!
@Jextxadore I think so to. He cracks a couple of times in the last take before the tea-brake. To sing this over and over again is simply crazy.
I wish they showed more concern for Frick! There were basses who would not risk their voices on Hagen!
