    Appreciate your honesty, break them in and try other amps. I've owned the M5HP's for just over a month. My second pair is Maggie LRS, matched with Schiit Freya+ and Bryston 3B. I bought the Axiom for the times I want to play the music loud. Will keep both, love having two pairs both made in North America. I will admit that I haven't connected the LRS's back up since the M5HP's. I will some day, but the M5HP's are doing a great job so far. Good honest review, might need to update your review after break in and trying other amps. Thanks.

      I too have a pair of the M5HP and found that they are a very revealing speaker. If paired up with a lower powered amplifier then they will not perform nearly as well as with a much higher grade unit. When I connected mine to an older Pioneer I bought at futureshop years back they sounded awful. Like in the review, it felt like the sound coming out was hollow and without any presence. The bass was thin and it sound stage left you feeling like it was only one dimensional.
      But I later hooked it up to a much more powerful and better built Arcam AV receiver that was giving it a more true 150watts of power and the sound was phenomenal. The bass really dug down into the range where a sub woofer wasn't really required any more. The mids and tweeters really blended and all the harshness tinny sound was gone. The sound stage just blew my mind. it was very immersive and with spectacular detail like you could feel the musician was standing right in front of you.
      You really do need to do yourself a favour and use a decent setup to get the most out of these speakers. Axiom are actually the manufacturer now for most of the much coveted Bryston products. They make their speakers for them, and I believe they are doing much of the manufacturing of their amplifiers. I know they handle all the repairs and refurbishment for Bryston. Axiom is a company on the move and providing quite the top end line of products.

    I own a pair of the older Axiom M22SE. My pair sound amazing... They are a neutral speakers and sound as they were designed to be. Your not going to get excited treble, mids, or bass...What you are going to get is exactly what is recorded... Your not going to get rumble out of a 6.5 inch speaker even being ported and like I said they aren't designed to do that. If you play audiophile music through them, well recorded and mastered, they are an absolute pleasure to listen to. Home theater sounds amazing. I run a SVS sealed sub so I cross mine at 80Hz and they do awesome with what they are designed to do... My theater room is fully treated, floor to ceiling bass traps, heavy curtains on the one window in the room, acoustic ceiling, and 8 pound pad under heavy commercial carpeting... In the right room these speakers are truly amazing for the price I paid for the pair years ago. I've owned PSB towers, Martin Logan towers, sound tested a pair of Revels in the same room, and also had KEFs in this same room. The only pair remaining are the Axiom because price to performance your not going to beat them. Can you spend thousands more for a better performance...You sure can but I'm not paying that price for a slight upgrade in performance. Axiom speakers tuned in an anechoic chamber and deliver exactly what is recorded when positioned and set up correctly...By the way the rear port looks weird because it's design to disperse the air flow to quiet the port down...

      I'm happy to hear you like your Axiom speakers. Unfortunately, in my case they fell flat. I don't mean flat in frequency response, which they are, and I did state in the video. I mean they are flat in their sound, as if they are sort of veiled and not transparent. FYI, in case you missed it in the video, when I was discussing bass, I was comparing it to other bookshelf speakers ;). Of course I don't expect a bookshelf to shake a room or provide tower speaker type bass.
      I think you may have missed some important points made in the video. I also covered that the shape of the port is there to help reduce port noise. I do disagree with your point on the price vs performance, but that is my opinion and I recognize that audio is subjective and that you may feel differently. Because audio is subjective, that means that neither of us are wrong in our opinions of the speaker.
      If these speakers have made a happy customer out of you, I am glad to hear that. After all, this hobby is about enjoying the music/movies with the gear we have...cheers.

    I have a set of m5hp, plus about 15~20 other pair of speakers. They follow Dr Toole's speaker building principals and are almost light giant monitors. Very revealing of the master recording and less forgiving of poorly produced music, because they are very accurate at reproducing fidelity. This is both their strength and flaw.
    So it depends on the type of music you listen to.
    Hence they can sound bright and harsh at times.
    In addition, what's holding these speakers back is that they aren't that cheap new (used prices are reasonable)... But the real thing holding them back is you need a quality amp that has a lot of power to help these run to their potential. Amps on the area of 2~3k to really get these to play well.
    I feel most newbies don't have that type of dime to drop into this hobby when they are starting out... So they say this speaker doesn't sound as good as the LS50 or elac dbr-62. In some ways they are right because you can get away with 700 amps running the 2 latter speakers. Most people won't be able to set up these to their potential... Herein lies the main issue.
    North Americas don't like German beer because it doesn't taste as good, but Germans know that German beer is the most pure, healthiest and less perverted form of beer.
    The popular sounds (beer) isn't always the most accurate.... But most would describe whats popular as musical.
    We live in an odd world.
    Thank you doing this review.

      I do have a few different amps to try that are fantastic amps, but if you NEED a 3k amp for these to sound good, I don't think that is a good thing. I agree, their prices have gone up so much that these speakers seem overpriced for their performance. I will see how they sound with my Tonewinner AD1PA amp, but so far they seem pretty unoriginal and lacklustre. I hope they win me over in some way after more time with them.

      Aesthetically they haven't changed at all. Otherwise everything has been redesigned after they hired Andrew Welker. Having owned a few generations of them, I can say they've improved significantly, and it's not like I hated them to begin with. I have 4 M5HPs as my surrounds, so I've never stress tested them as mains, but they've more than satisfied in their roles.

    • @innovationsinm
      @innovationsinm 2 года назад +1

      Actually there has been quite a bit of new developments in their line. Gone from the old TI line, to V2, V3 and now V4. The crossovers have changed totally. The tweeter is a new design. The woofers have a new housing to allow far more power and efficiency. But also a big change is they make just about everything in Canada at their Dwight facility. The price has gone up but so has what you get. They dropped the vinyl wrap and have gone to a real wood veneer.
      I looked at Paradigm speakers before choosing Axiom. they come out with a new model every 2 years but the sound of them never really seamed to improve year over year. it was like they just changed the look to make it seem like they were doing something different and plugged in the marketing talk to sound good. I would rather have a speaker that is actually double bind tested to verify improvements in design before releasing, than a company who will just stick something new out knowing it will sell just for being a new model.

So much for that "Canadian bias" I mentioned in a previous comment. 🤷‍♂ I've used the Axiom VP150 center and QS8 surrounds for many years now and find them both to be pretty decent for the price. My VP150 now serves as a backup. I'm actually using it now while I [still] wait for my Legacy Marquis XD and the QS8's have been in my system for probably 10 years straight now. They [obviously] can't keep up with the Focus SE's but that was expected. I've never used any of their floor standers or bookshelves, so I appreciate your feedback. I much prefer the PSA speakers. I enjoyed my axioms(i had m80's), but they require a lot of power to reach their potential. And at louder volumes I found them a tad bright.

    After more listening, your ears or your brain will get used to the sound and you will like it more. Not necessarily that the speaker will sound better after more use. So I’m sure your final review of this speaker will be better. But I think the initial impression is more important.

    I do not consider myself an audiophile, but I know more about audio engineering and hifi than many people I know who do call themselves audiophiles, so take that for what it's worth. I bought a full 5.1 set of Axiom gear back in 2011, and I'm still using it in my living room to this day. And - honestly? It hurts me to say, but - I've never really been happy it. It's just uninteresting. Underwhelming. Yes, it's neutral and uncolored, but it also sounds like there are things just missing. No engagement. I have two of the big towers with double 6-1/2" woofers for mains, a center with 5 drivers in it, the funky OS8 surrounds with the woofers in the top and bottom (which I actually think are great), and a 12-inch sub (that I have never been pleased with). Matched the passives to a "big boy" Emotiva XPA-5 amp (that weighs like 100 lbs) and an Emotiva Pre/Pro. Mid-bass and sub-bass are incredibly underwhelming, and that's with the 12" sub; even the big towers are just anemic on the low end w/o the sub. They're built likes tanks, look first-rate. Heavy as hell. Axiom has *great* customer service. Look, feel and read for all the world like they ought to punch all your audio love buttons, but they just don't. Kind of sounds like they aren't even trying very hard. Tried moving things around, EQ, even turned the whole living room 90° hoping room acoustics was the problem. Love everything about them except the entire experience where the rubber meets the road. I have wondered many times why Axiom does not offer the multitude of hifi review channels to review their speakers. I don't want to say out loud the conclusion I've come to. :(

    • @SpecOfTech
      @SpecOfTech  10 месяцев назад

      Sorry to hear that you have been pleased with them. You're right though, they do have excellent build quality. It's a shame that their sound is so underwhelming and uneventful. They seem to be too flat, no their frequency response, but more so in their lack of dynamics and liveliness.
