Also been imaging with the Antlia 5nm Ha/Oiii and Sii/Hb filter set. The Sii/Hb is great...it opens a ton of new doors for us OSC guys.

I have the double filter Antilia combination of HA/O3 and S2/HB. I am waiting for the skies to clear so I can actually use them. Getting the right mix to get the SHO look in Pixinsight appears to be quite a challenge. Thank you for tackling this challenge and giving ideas of how to get the best processing effect.
It’s definitely easier with two filters since it brings out more of the 03 and S2. I’d like to get my hands on the Antlia set since they went a slightly different route
@@darkrangersinc Yes, it would be great to be able to compare results of the different filter approaches. A while back I watched a RUclips by James Lamb who also owns the Antilia filter duo. There I was surprised to find that the Hb signal captures a somewhat similar color as the O3 filter. So, the Hb and O3 capture the blue/green range and the Ha and S2 capture the red signal. The confusion to me is how these colors should mix in Pixinsight to give the best SHO combination. There are several approaches that I’ve seen taken, and it’s not a simple road to the finish line.
I have the Antlia filters for HaO3/S2Hb and they work fine for me. Great results with a OSC camera.

@@darkrangersinc Yes indeed! What is great about this is that an imager can now choose Mono versus OSC on the basis of their typical weather patterns, how unpredictable their weather tends to be, the quality of their local sky conditions, how much free time they can devote to the hobby, and how many objects they want to image per season....then make the best choice with the knowledge that either method can produce impressive results. Everybody wins! 👍👍

@@turbo80lxcoupe very cool, those are pretty rare right?! I was into cars for a long time BMWs for track and Mustangs for straight line. Last one was a 2018 with built motor and turbo. Lots of fun but even more $$ and issues lol. I’m sure you know.
@darkrangersinc they were never sold in the usa.i had imported about 7 years ago. Thats awesome. Ive taken a break from the car hobby for now.still own it. Previously had a twin turbo 4th gen fbody and a few turbo notchback foxes

Started watching you a few weeks ago , just found you and like your content. I do OSC I do not think I will ever go to mono, its hard enough trying to get good sky with OSC. Anyway I may have to try these filter looks like they do a good job. The only thing I dont want to do is pixel math , NO IDEA how to use it , seems like a lot of work. I am sure there is a way to do it without the math..... Thanks for the videos
@@Steve_The_Ignorant_Astronomer probably the biggest misconception in the hobby is that mono is actually slower. You’re picking up so much more more signal for every minute of imaging. If you’re trying to do SHO with OSC vs mono you’ll get a better image faster with monochrome. Even if it’s just 1 night and 2 hours per filter. But if you want to stay OSC that’s totally understandable. I just don’t want people to do it because they think it’s a time savings.
With pixel, I only use a couple equations that I have saved and that way you don’t really have to understand it you just copy and paste. I feel the same way. I try to avoid it whenever possible 😂. I do have a second one of these with Antlia filters if you want to check that out as well it does have a quick Pm formula but it’s super simple
@@darkrangersinc Well one of the reasons I don't want to go mono is cost... I have spent so much money that a set of filters and a filter wheel and then a mono cam , yikes.. I have a sky shed pod EQ6rPro 2 scopes man it gets expensive ,plus weather so osc is for me. It is cool that you got the Hubble image.. I was checking out the filters and did did know they have the C1 and C2 and then the D1 and D2. Big price difference so have to look into that...But love the look.......

Another great video Ryan! I really really like the way you’ve done this! Considerably more simple than the way I’ve done it. Though I wonder if doing it this way does not allow the separate details of the Ha and Sii to shine through individually.
I’ll have to give this a shot once I’m done with my upcoming Soul Nebula, I’ve got 19 hours and 35 minutes through that askar D2 filter and after I gather more data tonight I’ll start on Ha Oiii.
Yeah separating the channels is still an option as well as other ways to combine the filters. Since the Ha and Sii are usually so prominent I wasn’t really worried about it. There was plenty of data to work with I could have added more saturation if I wanted the data was there for sure.
Very informative video. I have the L-Ultimate filter and was wondering what would your opinion be to using it with the Askar sulphur filter? I am pretty new with using narrow band filters.
Great workflow, something to attempt when I can get the so filter from Askar. As for the differences I reckon with more acquisition time it should be even closer to the mono with more subs.
Yeah I typically go with 15-20 hours total for SHO basically one full night per filter. So I would do the same. Just double whatever you’re doing with a single filter. With monochrome there is no overlap between the filters, but you’re also getting the entire pixel so I would just treat the overlap as bonus and compensating for the color sensor if it were me.
There are definitely other ways to combine the two filters, it’ll be fun for you to experiment with and try. For this target I just chose HOO because it seemed to make the most sense given NGC7000 is so Blue in Mono and the D2 filter was rich with Oxygen.
I’ve also seen where you can get really complicated with it and split the channels of each filter so you have six total and start combining the different channels between the filters but I knew I didn’t need to do all that to get the look I wanted.

Great video, Ryan! Could you have just moved the red histogram in GHS to the left by selecting Red and using the Linear option in GHS, rather than stretching initially to equalize the curves? Also, don't know if you use them but Bill Blanshan has a ton of 'one-click' stretch scripts, e.g., GHStretch, HTStretch (Linked and Unlinked). Might be an easier way to do this (without waiting for the great developers at PI to do it). I'm using the Antlia combination of 5nm dual narrowband OSC filters, i.e., Ha/OIII and SII/Hb, but I kind of like the idea of the extra OIII being duplicated in both Askar D filter set, though. This was terrific and very instructional. Thanks!
Thanks! I was just quickly showing why we didn’t want to do it manually in GHS when we could do a simple unlinked stretch.
I do have Bills Tools but in an effort to make it as easy to follow for everyone just doing it with the STF is only one extra step I was just giving Pixinsight a hard time by saying to do in one click.
I try to only use the plug-ins that I have another video explaining otherwise, I have to essentially stop and show people how to go find the script and install it or a beginner can’t follow along. Also when it comes to stretching for the final result I prefer to do it myself vs a script for a simulated GHS stretch. But in this case using one for the unliked stretch and then go in and finalize yourself would be 👍🏼
Every other plug-in that I used I have a video out on: Narrowband Normalization, GHS, and Star Screen. That show you how to install if needed and use.
I know somebody like you who has the tool will just use it… And so it’s a balance of making it easier for myself versus trying to make it easy for the audience to follow along and so you’ll notice I don’t use a lot of icons either I tend to manually go in, and Grab each process to show folks how to. I have a separate work space that I use just for videos that’s essentially a blank canvas.
The one I’m using when I edit has all of the icons already laid out ready to go. it seems second nature to us to do all that but I want total beginners all the way up to folks that are fairly advanced to be able to get some out of the videos so that’s why I sometimes go about things a little bit more “manually” than I do when I edit on my own.
I was a little disappointed to see Antlia go with that second filter I noticed that when I was researching for the video. I think Hb isn’t as great a choice as a second O3.
In theory, it makes more sense, but when you see it in practice, and how much more of the oxygen signal becomes visible, I kind of like the way, Askar did it.
I do have their Quad Band on the way which also has Hb so I’m going to test it versus the Tri band I already own and see if that Hb makes a difference
Who knows after using it we might realize how important that Hb signal is 🤷🏻♂️. It’s an ever changing landscape these days. A lot of the stuff that comes out is pretty gimmicky and to be frank I thought these would be but after using the data I think it’s work the buy if you’re not going mono.
Folks that have a monochrome camera I would keep your color camera, mostly for broadband and using a filter like the Tri/Quad at most or go to dark skies and shoot filter free.

Appreciate the feedback, and I just tested it out. I think you’re right using the linear would be a little bit faster than dragging the symmetry to get the red channel over so good call 💪🏼.
