It was also necessary. If you ever heard and saw Louis in person, his sound would have dominated. Recall the first time , in the 'old tin shed' (Sydney Stadium, Rushcutters Bay) in Sydney when he walked onto the stage playing. I looked and asked myself - where does he hide the microphone? He did not need one. If you read about his 'Hot Five' and 'Hot Seven' recordings, he had to stay way behind the band since there was only one mike.
There isn't more sexier musicians than the bassists, and no more sexier musical instrument than bass... What a powerful and gentle sound at the same time...
Arvell was a great bassist.Loved Louis, stayed with the All Stars until Satch became too I'll to go on..He had tears in his eyes when he told of the day Louis came to say he 'could not go any further.'.they had toured together 300 plus days per year since the 1950s..
There maybe the Christian McBride's, the Marcus Miller's, Gary Karr, & John clayton Jr.'s and a host of others of those floor waxers out there, but who waxed a floor as the great marvel shaw from the Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington era? Just clearly peep his hands, homeschool doesn't have to change the water much time get that miracle shine on the 'floor', an acrylic finish fa sho!!!
If I were a stand-up bass player, I would now want to slit my wrists. This brilliant bass-playing musician, Arvel Shaw, should always be mentioned in the same conversation with Slam Stewart, Milt Hinton, Ray Brown, Paul Chambers, Ron Carter, Stanley Clarke, and Marshall Wood. Addendum: I've listened to this performance at least half a dozen times over the last half a dozen years, and I only just noticed the musical pun in the intro: "Moon Over Miami" is used as an intro for "How High the Moon." Clever.
tuxguys Absolutely agree.I saw Arvel several times. Not only a brilliant bass player but a very nice man as well. Don't forget the great Trigger Alpert in that list.
Maaan if this band only could make a collab with Andrzej Zaucha, who nailed How High The Moon, despite he was from Poland and didn't know too much English. He was a genius. They would sound so good together.
How High the Moon; une version servie à la moderne et extraordinairement jouée et chantée s'avère celle de Jeff Beck & Imelda May en 2010 ... à entendre absolument pour les amoureux de cette grandiose pièce musicale astrale.
Yessss! And he is my Uncle! Rest in peace ❤🙏🏽
Yesss bravo !
Your Uncle was a tremendous talent!
I am another N here and he is brilliant.
I love his sound
I knew him in Long Island .I was back when I was a kid
I played string bass for 14 years, or thought I did. After watching this video I think
I might have well been playing marbles !!!
Observe how Louis Armstrong stayed behind even when playing again...respect !
Exceptionnel !!!!
Tremendous. He really was THE king of jazz.

yesssssssss
Quite possibly the greatest bass solo in the history of live music!
I count myself very fortunate to have been in the audience in the Sydney Stadium (an old boxing venue) at the age of 20, for Louis' performance.

I can only imagen how difficult that must have been for both Satch and Arvell
This is a trio, no doubt! How nice to see Booker and Collins on the same set. Public service!
best double bass performance on youtube I found to date. I was clapping and cheering in front of the screen like a nutter from a nuthouse. Wowzer!

Check out NHØP with Joe Pass doing 'donna lee'.

The most fantastic - and under celebrated piece of Bass playing - anywhere....
