I'm absolutely dying at the Godskin Albenauric in the background. Like one got so fed up with everything it learnt Godslayer Incantations to go kill those responsible for it's suffering.
"Lord of the Erdtree....Lord of Marika...You too deserve to face the reckoning." The vitriol that drips off his tongue in that moment, man. The voice actor for Hornsent is a standout even among an incredibly well--directed cast. "O Miquella...please redeem our clan." It's sad - in that ending, he even comes to terms with Miquella's promise, decides that redemption for his people can come hand in hand with accepting one of Marika's progeny as a new god. Perhaps the fading out of his vengeance had him cling onto newfound purpose, which unfortunately you snuff out with the rest of Leda's seekers.
All the way back in DeS we can find that there's a crunch to some lines that stand out in an unusual way. The tone and even the volume of some of the lines are just not what you commonly see elsewhere.
The Hornsent man, for all his hatred of her, is all too much like Marika. Marika, whose people were slaughtered, tortured and butchered by the Hornsent, extracted vengeance without discrimination, condemning all who used and were associated with the crucible. And now the Hornsent, after killing Messmer, continues down his vengeful path, wanting all denizens of the Erdtree to pay, even when ironically one such denizen was the reason he got his vengeance in the first place.
Interesting how horns seem to be manifest more messily on Omens vs. Hornsent. Especially when comparing the curseblades vs. the bog standard sewer Omen.
The suffering endured by the Omen in the Age of the Erdtree actually enhances their spiritual power, that power being achieved by pain (self-inflicted or otherwise)
I think the Omen are a literal curse in ways too, there tormented by spirits those of the dead Hornscent I’d imagine which causes them to sprout horns everywhere and this also explains how the Dungeater quest works
@@Grimsly3736 yeah im also of belief that the omens really are a curse inflicted on not just marika but also of her people by the hornsent or at least from the grandan.
If you study the old lady's hair and garb headgear, it does seem akin to Nanaya's - the veil of the eyes section too. I wouldn't say it's so farfetched that Nanaya was a hornsent by origin.
Nice spot! This could be very possible - the King rarely answering anyone's summons would fit the Divine Birds seldom taking to human companionship. Plus, the Divine Beast Lion is characterised by storms and all that. Thank you for pointing this out!
I really hate how a lot of people didn't understand the hornsent at all, and genuinely see the story as "Hornsent bad guys, messmer good guys". The cycle of violence between the shamans, hornsent, and messmers army are meant to be that - a cycle. It is a trail of revenge and religious ferver that causes atrocity after atrocity until theres nothing left but vengeful people to make more atrocities. The point was never that hornsent are inherently evil, but that those at large did evil things and every single hornsent got punished for it. It's a lesson in total violence and 'scorched earth' philosophies. The hornsent had evil practices and did terrible things, yet it is a tragedy that their entire people is near extinct due to a mass slaughter by a foreign army. Both the shamans and the hornsent are a tragedy, despite one slaughtering the other. And just the same if another group rised and slaughtered every golden order citizen, that would still be a tragedy as well. The cycle of violence is awful, no matter who it is directed at. THATS the point, not "Hornsent kill shamans, we kill hornsent, good ending" But all of that to say - thank you Miss Chalice.
It's also a more nuanced portrayal than most. This isn't the typical case where "leaders/systems bad, innocent people good." Even the innocent Hornsent were racist as fuck towards the Shamans, and we're led to believe most seemingly condoned the actions their nation took. That doesn't mean they deserve to be slaughtered for being racist, just that being innocent and being good are not the same thing per se. Irl, it's very reminiscent of modern events. Israeli people are hugely racist and dehumanizing towards Palestinians, and many many innocent Palestinians support Hamas. None of those racist, genocide-supporting Israeli citizens or terrorist-sympathizer Palestinians deserve to die for their opinions, but them being innocence does not necessarily mean they have no faults.
I don't think anyone remotely sane saw Messmer and the good guy. He's called "The Impaler" everyone everywhere talks about how he just murdered his way across the lands of shadow.
@@CaptainSkylocke Nah I vibe with Messmer giving one back to the Hornsent after what they did to Marika/Shamans, like Leda says the Hornsent weren't saints either just that they were on the losing side of a war. Messmer ain't good but he's the lesser of two evils by a long shot and he's shown to have a lot of other qualities. Inspiring genuine loyalty and devotion with his troops, helping the jar folks, preserving Hornsent culture in a section of Shadow Keep.
I do love how unique the tower and it's culture are, it's really unlike any other location I've seen. BTW your Rellena cosplay was awesome I don't know how long that must of taken to make but it looks cool as hell.
This filled in a lot of gaps for me - when I played through the DLC I think I did a few important things in the wrong order and missed out on all the hornsent content and the grandnam wouldn't talk to me even with the head! Good to finally understand what was going on.
One difference between the Omens and the Hornsent (the NPCs and enemies, anyway) is that the Omens have a monstrous physique as well as horns, while the Hornsent are mostly human looking. Omens look more like a mashup up the hornsent and the blood fiends, which is perhaps related to the "curse" of omenism, and the association between the Formless Mother and cursed blood. The hornsent seem to gain their horns through physical proximity and connection to the "crucible currents", while Omens seem born at random throughout the population (Mohg and Morgott maybe weren't so random, though). The Formless Mother also apparently revealed herself to the blood fiends through one of the hornsent tutelary deities, although the blood fiends themselves don't show horns. I don't know exactly what the connection is, but seems like something is up there.
Lions + Storm = Representations of Godfreys Power. I wonder if he was a Northerner that took up the traditions of the Hornsent, becoming a Divine Beast warrior (he does the stomps), and took on Godfrey as his name so he could be accepted to properly be shipped with their upcoming Saint Marika. They are shipped, and Godfrey takes his closest buds to be his Crucible Knights. Godfrey takes on Serosh like Radan does Miquella. And we know he had no shortage of horned lions. I keep wondering if Serosh was the Storm Lord.
doubt it as we know godfrey just lost his grace and soon banished after beating the storm lord and we know serosh was put on him so he could hold back his violent nature whilst elden lord.
@@ChanceClubs Yeah probably. Just the association with storms being Lions with Horns in this DLC. And no Hawks having any wind-like abilities at all in the game other than being called storm hawks.
I don't think that the Omen are the same people as the Hornsent. The living Hornsent we see in game seem to only have horns sprouting from their heads, while the Omen's entire bodies are covered in an obtrusive layer of twisting horns. The Omen are also said to be taunted by horned spirits in their frightful dreams. The Omen seem more like the result of a curse put upon Marika and her lineage by the Hornsent.
Another thing to note when talking about spirals. The Gloam-Eyed Queens Godslayer Greatsword is decorated as a spiral, possibly because of her being an Empyrean. What is even more strange, however is that Vargram also has the Greatsword. It brings to question what relationship spirals had to the shadow beasts he wanted to emulate. Maybe even Maliketh and Serosh could have been on the level of the divine beasts?
When you talked about the Hornsent statues that pour out spirit dust, it reminded me of a miracle that takes place in Orthodox Christian Churches. Icon's of Saint's will sometimes be caught streaming Myrrh from the paintings. There are videos and pics of this happening. And, like the statues, it's believed the Saints are still alive, and that the Icons are representation of the prototypes they are based on (the Saints themselves) thus allowing communication through prayer to the Saints.

From Software lore videos are one of my favorite RUclips genres. Love this video! This DLC has us players questioning our assumed goodness as protagonists of the story, which is always a great thing when done right. Also previous FS games are all about breaking or restarting cycles, and I think Shadow of the Erdtree kinda brought back this theme with the shaman-hornsent conflict. It's an unending cycle of revenge, misery and suffering. And IRL violence is pretty much cyclical, like the ouroboros, a serpent that endlessly feeds on itself. To me, the DLC makes the base game ending better, since it allows for some roleplay ¿Will you end the cycle upon taking the throne (or marrying Ranni) or will you replace it with another? Or maybe you're a nihilistic edgelord and just burn it all with the flame of frenzy since there's no possible redemption.
saw a reddit post today that the lamenter boss, locked away in one of the dungeons, is quite likely a divine hornsent. It has aspects of every thing, horns, black flame, red hair. But it was shunned, because the hornsent were so stuck with what the idea should be, rather than the reality in front of them
Your cosplays are Top Notch. Creating these must take you many days. Thanks for the hard work. You're British voice, pitch perfect and your Lore is Rich!
Ok so there is an aspect of the cursed blade cirque that I don't hear mention of. The blades are designed to stab into the user's wrists. The item description mentions this as self fladgulation but people seem to miss that its literal. When using these weapons they damage the user, not in a gameplay sense but in a lore sense. I don't fully understand why they are this way. The curse blades themselves don't seem like failures to me, they are of greater importance than the average hornsent. Maybe they are being punished for coming so close to divine status? While ultimately falling just short. Idk, but i wanted to add that lil thing about the wrist stabbing thorn on the weapon themselves

this is one of the best videos on this subject you did such a wonderful job of delving into the culture of the hornsent I cant wait to see what the next half looks like!
Great video! It's crazy how you can run across and read all these Lord s and know them to be true in your head, but you don't really put it together until somebody painstakingly comes along and makes a video explaining it. Thank you
When you think about it, the furnace golems might’ve been designed to be Marika and Messmer’s “jars” for the Hornsent: A massive, animated entity powered by living beings stuffed inside it to keep it active.
I love your videos and have been excited for you to dive into the DLC more. But I hope you've been able to take your time and enjoy the game and the world for yourself too!
Both you and the previous reply are idiots. There's no concrete evidence that the Hornsent had anything to do with the whole jar thing. He very well could have just found the mask and decided to wear it symbolically. Alternatively, he may have been the Potentate mentioned in the cookbook who was disgusted by the practices of his kin. Also, his entire family was brutally slaughtered, so no shit he's pissed off.
My only disagreement would be that omens are hornsent. Well no, they appeared when the erdtree was dying. As an omen. Moreover, they look and behave very differently from hornsent if we look at their attacks and how rudimentary their tools are They really do seem to be a curse however.
Great loreplay, Chalice. As always a really enjoyed every aspect of it. And I'll be expecting the next one because Marika is one of me favorite characters.

I would love to pick your brain on other things I've come across in game if you have a more public discord. Regardless, thank you and keep up the awesome job ^^
I thought I’d post a few lore thoughts here, which I havn’t seen discussed (though I might have missed it) Since I don’t have the actual game these things might be silly or obvious to all) “Kind Miquella spoke of the beginning” - ergo, someone told him, and only one person could have told him, Merika. Maybe as a warning (she didn’t want to be a bad mom) or to put him on the path (if you think she’s a pure monster?). Or, depending on how powerful Miquella is, she might have told him out of “tainted” love. “Of the seduction and betrayal” Is the Elden gate/god portal grafted? Looks like it on RUclips anyways. Seducing your people into being crafted into it and then leaving would be kinda be a betrayal. Or she could have seduced the hornsent into building it from her people and then betragtes them by using it herself. The flesh pots are called Saints right? Saints performance godly miracels, enough of them mushed together might get you close enough to god to grasp it (this last bit was just me spitballing and trying to get it down in writing)
Thank you for the new video. I just recently stumbled across your channel, and I honestly love the way you put the lore together, tell it to us, and edit your videos. I can't stop watch them. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Brazil. :)
A little late to getting to watch another one of you amazing lore-plays! You deserve a million views with the amount of love amd effort you put into your videos! :)
I dont think the omen are the same as hornsent I think Omen are the result of Messmer crusade, The hornsent wrath sending a curse towards Marika and her Golden order That's why the omen grow horns in ways that hurt them like Mohg growing horns in his eye socket and also why the Omen have visions of their Kin in their nightmares they are the Call of the hornsent crying out burning in the embrace of Messmer's Flame
One important detail you forgot to mention is the Black Keep. It is implied that the Specimen Storage room belonged to a scientific organization involved in researching and conducting archaeological work on ancient Rauth. Messmer appears to have worked closely with them, as his emblem features their symbol alongside his flame. This organization seemingly dispatched the horned warriors on field missions into Rauth, with the findings brought back to the Black Keep for study. Messmer's betrayal resulted in the massacre of the Hornsent researchers in the Black Keep, though the Fire Knights chose not to destroy the building, recognizing the value of the knowledge stored within. The implication here is that some of the Hornsent's cultural practices or their understanding of the Crucible may have been discovered in collaboration with Marika. Given that we find the same tablets in Marika's bedchamber and the prophecy of Miquella’s plans in the storage room, it seems Marika may have butchered the Hornsent not only out of revenge but also because of knowledge she uncovered in Rauth. Rauth, on the other hand, appears to be the civilization responsible for creating the Divine Towers, linking them both to the Elden Ring and the Crucible.
I like it how you mention the Hornsent and Omen and discuss their perception. Of course the Omen are Hornsent. Marika may have been successful at pretty much wiping them out but as you can see, the cruicible's influence persists and so even in Marika's order that has shunned the Hornsent, keeps giving birth to new ones. It is merely Marika's past that has twisted the term Hornsent into Omen. That's probably also why their souls don't return to the Erdtree. Not because they don't have any or because they are vile - Marika explicitely prevents that from happening. Making sure that they keep perishing.

Great video deserves more views for the effort you put in them especially with the cosplays
THANK YOU so much for mentioning the Omen in relation to the Hornsent. I saw almost no one saying anything about the twos connection. Truely Lovely stuff
Awesome video and very underated perspectives that you have that must be looked at by more people to get a great appreciation for the game.
Grandam calling Marika a strumpet gets me every time lol. Your videos are always so well researched, I truly appreciate your observations.
This channel reminds me of mrballen for video games. Such good narratives and background music so immersive.
I adore your videos. Your voice carries a peacefulness beyond measure
Love the content. Honestly from the first second of the video you feel an engagement not common in most videos. Ty for the cosplays, i love them lol
These videos always educate me and help me sleep, you are the GOAT lore god
this is one of the best videos on this subject you did such a wonderful job of delving into the culture of the hornsent I cant wait to see what the next half looks like!
I love your narrations and lore breakdowns.
Just want to say thank you for your videos! I have to watch them at least twice: once for the lore, and once to fall asleep to 😴
My favorite lore channel and has been for a while now! You are fantastic and your videos are amazing! Thank you for all your hard work!
It’s a new video my favorite Elden Ring channel! What a good start of a day!
18:02 the curse of the omen spoken of by the grandam is another iteration on the curse of kos from the fishing hamlet in bloodborne
Nice to see a video detailing the lore of the Hornsent without diving into "Total Hornsent Death".
Also, this is the voice of an angel.
the ascetic's set kinda looks like morgott's robe
My absolute favorite lore vids to enter St.Trinas realm to. Albinauric is amazing 👏
I’m new to this channel but I’ve come to love these lore videos and the cosplay. Thank you for making them 👏🏾
Lovely lingering shot on the minor erdtree for the cliffhanger so to speak. Another tremendous video overall for that matter.
Thank you as always for the amazing lore analysis video, just in time for ne to finish the channel's catalogue
Every time I hear the Hornsent get all pissy all I can think is "awwwww did your actions have consequences? Poor baby! Now eff off"
Exactly!! Play messed up games, get messed up prizes
I don't want to be weird but I really like how your voice sounds. It calming and I'll put your videos on in the background when I can't sleep
Sometimes she sounds like a somber fromsoft NPC, and it gives me chills!
Ah yes, a new video to watch while working out and re-watching for the next 3 weeks. Thanks Chalice!
Love your content. And that voice. Damn! Subscribed!
I wanted to give the grandam a hug ;u; especially after she gives you that stew.
I only want to kill her
Great loreplay, Chalice. As always a really enjoyed every aspect of it. And I'll be expecting the next one because Marika is one of me favorite characters.
Have been waiting for you to cover the hornsent lore!!!
Love your videos, I'm so happy I found your channel. The way you talk about the lore of my all time favorite game is enchanting. Keep it up :)
You and SmoughTown help me keep track of all this lore and I think you so much for this amazing work 💜💜 this playlist also helps me sleep, you have such a soothing voice I love it 💜
It is suitable that the cat decided to make an appearance in the video discussing Divine Beasts. It thought the video was about itself.
Even though the Hornsent are out to strike me down as I look around the place.... if Grandam gives me food and tells me stories, she earns my loyalty and protection. Simple as that. 😭❤
You have a lovely voice for narration, and your cosplays are very endearing.
In short. Good work! Keep it up! We beleive in you!
I love your videos Chalice. On top of a mesmerizingly hypnotic voice, all the lore, time and effort put into the videos is so greatly appreciated. Your ability to hold the smallest details in memory to create the subtlest connections in game is unparalleled. I mean it when I say I love these videos. I would love to pick your brain on other things I've come across in game if you have a more public discord. Regardless, thank you and keep up the awesome job ^^
I thought I’d post a few lore thoughts here, which I havn’t seen discussed (though I might have missed it)
Since I don’t have the actual game these things might be silly or obvious to all)
“Kind Miquella spoke of the beginning” - ergo, someone told him, and only one person could have told him, Merika.
Maybe as a warning (she didn’t want to be a bad mom) or to put him on the path (if you think she’s a pure monster?). Or, depending on how powerful Miquella is, she might have told him out of “tainted” love.
“Of the seduction and betrayal”
Is the Elden gate/god portal grafted?
I spent the vast majority of my time doing invasions in the sewers, so I love the omens. I'm glad they were fleshed out in the dlc.
Miss Chalice sounds like a Dark Souls character it really enriches her vids ngl 11/10 Based and Sunpilled would summon again
Absolutely love the horns! Great touch for this lore
A little late to getting to watch another one of you amazing lore-plays! You deserve a million views with the amount of love amd effort you put into your videos! :)
omg the kitty making a guest appearance :D
I dont think the omen are the same as hornsent
I think Omen are the result of Messmer crusade, The hornsent wrath sending a curse towards Marika and her Golden order
That's why the omen grow horns in ways that hurt them like Mohg growing horns in his eye socket and also why the Omen have visions of their Kin in their nightmares they are the Call of the hornsent crying out burning in the embrace of Messmer's Flame
Very nice video, once again. And a very cute kitten, you have there XD
8:53 wow that's an interesting item description.
I wouldn't know before this video because I CAN'T GET THEM TO DROP.
Awesome video as always, Chalice :)
Mooooooommm the best lore creator just dropped another banger
You've earned a subscriber and then some, Ms. Chalice :) Keep making amazing content. You have a very calming, distinguished, and soothing voice.
The Favourite Lore channel out there. 🤗
a really fun thing about the scadutree is how its crooked, kinda like looking at a tree's shadow on the ground when a light source shines on it.
I discovered this channel after the DLC and Im glad we are finally getting soft voiced DLC review content.
My Tarnished : "Hurt people! Hurt people!"
