I'm so glad I'm not the only one. So many videos of people painting furniture, then when it looks great they attack it with sandpaper to make it look beat up & worn out. Kills me.
My best tip: customer reviews! They are your friend! They provide non staged photos in normal lighting, they tell you if it breaks in a week, they're essential
My personal rule is if it doesn't have a rating of 4.6/5 or higher, I don't consider it. And only buy products that have at least a couple dozen reviews (and at least a few reviews with photos).
Yes the reviews are so important, especially ones with pictures. Gotta love a good review with actual useful info! Not the ones that are like "I should have gotten the cream color instead of the green cuz it would match more better...ONE STAR" hahah
Just a note: Wishbone chairs are a Scandinavian take on a Ming Dynasty chair. I mention it because while Japanese influence in decor is often acknowledged, Chinese is often muted.
I didn’t know that! And the Glinda Chair in this video is a rip-off of the Mulan Chair by 12H, a Chinese design company that also incorporated traditional Chinese woodworking techniques into it. Their other products are also really interesting and could pass for Scandinavian designs. I’d love to see a video on Chinese interior design!

It seems to me that your viewers value your honesty and constructive criticism and maybe that type of series would help us find/refine our style ;)
We just purchased a tv console table from Wayfair. Be aware that when they say real wood and the item needs assembly, they’re often using very soft wood. Ours was pine and damages very easily. Also, when Wayfair says assembly read the reviews and get a true picture of just how much assembly is required. Ignore the girl who says oh my boyfriend assembled it in 1 hour because the guy had to have been a carpenter. I wish I could show you a picture of our piece pre-assembly, because it was literally a pile of sticks. About 8 hours later we had a piece of furniture. It does look nice, and is sturdy, but there is no room for error in assembly.

I've bought from Wayfair for years. The biggest tip from me is that if you see something there, look for it elsewhere. They have never had the lowest price on anything I have been able to find elsewhere. Also - do not accept broken things! Return them! I am amazed at the number of 5 star reviews that start with... one corner came broken, but I just put that facing the wall. No! You paid for all corners to be unbroken. Call them out on this. Despite price and damage issues, I have bought some decent rugs from them. I also bought a Kelly Clarkson wall mirror from them that is one of my favorite furniture/decor buys in recent years.
@@Lily-pf8bd First - remove the name of the item. For example..Fairfield textured ceramic lamps...drop the Fairfield. It was just added by the seller. ui, that black and cream rug didn't do it for me. i probably agreed with everything else you said in this video, but that rug would be waaay too loud for me (even if the rest of the furniture is muted, like - that rug would make me spend my days outside of the house LOL) but the other rug didn't do it for me, either the coffee table - despite fitting nowhere in my home - is GLORIOUS!!!
You're right Nick, not surprised that you didn't like the manufactured distressed furniture. It's just bad! Yes! I bought one of those abstract rugs. When my daughter came back from Design school, she told me to burn it! I did take it back to the store.
I have a square glass coffee table with silver detailing. I adore it and I got a side table which is extremely similar from Wayfair...sorry it's lovely and I'm not getting rid of it....lol.

I agree - I cannot stand manufactured distressed shabby wood items. I don't mind a great vintage find with some hard earned marks of use. But I will pass on the fake stuff every time.
I recently saw a 12-in slice of agate mineral (cut like a round plate) on a brass holder that would look perfect on your TV buffet piece. A couple of sapphire blue small rectangular lumbar pillows would look good on your couch. Your room needs some punches of blue
I wish they would get better at shipping, product quality aside. every time i've ordered from them we've had major shipping issues. last time we wanted to send something back and couldnt because i'm pretty sure the box was mauled by a t-rex.
The last big thing that I ordered from Wayfair was delivered by Mattress Firm. And not a Mattress Firm sub. The wrapped truck with the guys in the official polos. They were great.
I've found several things on Wayfair that I absolutely love but I also feel like they're priced too high sometimes and I can dupe some of their furniture and decor myself for much less. Plus I really enjoy thrifting and flipping as opposed to buying new, or a mix of old and new. I love timeless pieces, as well as vintage. But I also adore a new sofa or some stunning mid century modern chairs. 😍
Always enjoy your videos. I've learned a lot from you. What I especially like about "Buy This Not That" is you point out many pros and cons with alternative suggestions. Thank you Nick :)
Hey Nick! Another fun video. You do an excellent job at keeping the flow of the video smooth. We got a upright freezer from Wayfair awhile back. Showed up dented as heck, they ended up giving it to us for free. Still works, just banged up. Gonna chalk paint it! Have a great week and thanks for the fun videos. You make them very watchable. Same with Lisa Holt. Very watchable and fun content. Cheers, Ivy.
This shankle geometric rug looks like something people put in their homes in the 90s in living blocks in Poland. People throw that stuff away now. The pretor upholstered chair is also something waaay from the past, it's a repellant for me (especially when I see it at restaurants), it makes spaces look really cheap. The cate coffee table is something you'd have in a waiting room at the doctor's. Nope. But I love the mirrored drawer from the thumbnail, it's really gorgeous but you'd need to place it so that it doesn't blind you when reflecting the light from outside.
9:20 when I was 2 years old, on the day my brother was born, I ran face-first into my aunt’s glass coffee table and sliced my face open. Nearly gouged one of my eyes-I’ve got a gorgeous scar coming down from my left eye. Yeah, glass coffee tables are a pretty big hazard.
How do you fit a surround sound system in your space Nick? I absolutely DON'T want the small black speakers hanging on my walls. You inspired me to redo my small space, the whole living room GONE. My space is only 930 sq ft, a two bedroom place, and I bought furniture with storage in each new piece I bought. But those speakers will ruin the work I've put in, eye sores. Any suggestions? Anyone have any ideas? I love music, sitting down and enjoying an album is important to me thus the speaker system. Just don't know how to hide the satellite speakers. I'm a renter just fyi
Oh no, that coffee table is giving me major (nightmarish) flashbacks. My boyfriend actually picked that out as an option for a coffee table, in addition to every other bizarre monstrosity they sold on there. We spent many hours arguing over it, but fortunately my design style won the battle!
My partner had questionable taste but over the 9 years we have been together he has learned to let me have final choice. Our home gets compliments and he takes credit but I don't care. It looks the way I want it to. Ha
The landlord of my current (furnished) apartment clearly loves glass tables (coffee and dinner table both glass). After being here for a few years I hate them even more. Moving out soon and can’t wait to be rid of horrible furniture 😂
Ouch! I bought the similar coffee table but just inverted where the top is solid and the bottom is broken up… What did you end up getting? I mainly made the choice because I was focusing more on something that would not look too big as I can only have a small coffee table…
wishing for your video on using antique or vintage furniture, especially that piece you fell in love with that maybe doesn't fit the styles you discussed (boho, scandi, etc.) Like a mid 1800's corner cabinet? Or a wild early 50's piece that is not quite midcentury modern?
Also - they have recently added the option to sort by things that are actually deliverable in a few days. That helps a lot. It is funny to watch the number of blue chairs that match your filtered search drop from 12,752 to 4 when you add in the deliverable in 2-5 days filter.
Hi Nick, I wonder if you would talk about working with a designer to decorate a home or a condo. I've read that normally designer fees are about 20% of the cost of materials, and it's worth it because designer would pick proper materials on the first attempt. Also, I don't trust myself enough with my taste and with my eye for proportions, and I think that a designer would create something way more interesting than I.
Now that's funny! I just bought a blue-grey/beige/tan version of the Shankle rug on Amazon by another manufacturer for my home office. It's half the price of Wayfair.
I bought a "distressed wood piece with the different colored doors in the polls a couple years ago. And then I just painted the outside and left the doors in the various colors it looks great. But yeah distress can really look like it ran through a sawmill.
Nick, which cost effective furniture websites do you recommend? I am finishing up a home remodel, so I need to begin shopping for my living room & bedroom. Thank you for sharing 🌻
I'm not Nick and I dislike Facebook, but there are some deals on marketplace. I am moving and have bought over $12,000 in essentially new furniture on there for $4,000. You gotta look for a while and avoid sketchy neighborhoods....but the deals are there. I also bring my future son-in-law - he has a truck and is licensed for concealed carry. That's how we shop in Texas.
I love that you’re providing this information but I’m not clear on whether you’ve actually seen these products or you’re just looking at them on the website? Makes a big difference whether you’ve seen them in person in terms of quality, durability, and how they were made.

They are legit and have good stuff, but mind you, they sometimes overcharge for things. Better to search their inventory and compare the same item you are looking for at other retailers for price comparison. I had found out many times the item they have is cheaper at another retailer.

ui, that black and cream rug didn't do it for me. i probably agreed with everything else you said in this video, but that rug would be waaay too loud for me (even if the rest of the furniture is muted, like - that rug would make me spend my days outside of the house LOL) but the other rug didn't do it for me, either
the coffee table - despite fitting nowhere in my home - is GLORIOUS!!!
You're right Nick, not surprised that you didn't like the manufactured distressed furniture. It's just bad!
Yes! I bought one of those abstract rugs. When my daughter came back from Design school, she told me to burn it! I did take it back to the store.
Fake aging - the pre-ripped jeans of the interior design world
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have a square glass coffee table with silver detailing. I adore it and I got a side table which is extremely similar from Wayfair...sorry it's lovely and I'm not getting rid of it....lol.
“You have a couple of videos to catch up on” - as if we haven’t already binge-watched your whole channel. :D
Hey you! Did you just discover Nick’s channel?
One piece of advice: pace yourself with watching Nick’s videos, bc they will run out to soon (bc they are so great!)
Just found the channel and I'm in love. Such a good personality and good advice.
Honestly moving into my first apartment and I’ve been watching your videos religiously. Thanks for taking some of the stress off!
I agree - I cannot stand manufactured distressed shabby wood items. I don't mind a great vintage find with some hard earned marks of use. But I will pass on the fake stuff every time.
Please continue this series 👍🏼
I recently saw a 12-in slice of agate mineral (cut like a round plate) on a brass holder that would look perfect on your TV buffet piece. A couple of sapphire blue small rectangular lumbar pillows would look good on your couch. Your room needs some punches of blue
I love buy this not that vid, can't wait to see other stores!!
That shankle rug looks like something from Home Depot
I would really love that mirrored sideboard if it were glass doors instead! I feel like that’s really what that piece is trying to go for.
Glass doors are beautiful if you want to display the contents, but not if you want to hide your clutter. Always something I consider before shopping.
@@theresa78201 very true! That’s probably how this mirror trend got started. Get that glass look without showing clutter.
Always enjoy your videos. I've learned a lot from you. What I especially like about "Buy This Not That" is you point out many pros and cons with alternative suggestions. Thank you Nick :)
6:22 I looove jute rugs. Simple yet very welcoming. It's so perfect for my japandi style home
Every time I see a glass coffee table I think of Anthony Michael Hall.
LOVE Sixteen Candles!!
I wish I could afford your style 😂. I love it but it’s not plausible.
I got a free solid wood tv stand today, I’m happy with that for now 🤪
You are spot on!!! Loving your selections
Gawd yes...mirrored furniture is the worst but a close second is the distressed junk.
Awhile back I posted that I was in rug hell. Thanks Nick, for now showing everyone those embarrassing geometric rugs. I’m replacing them tomorrow.☹️
That warm toned rug gave me serious wall mural at Starbucks energy😂
Mid-century modern and Scandinavian are my jam!
Awesome! Yes I had a dented propane tank cover and they sent a new one and told me to keep the old one. I've heard this from several people!
Your design style and presentation are spot on always.
Ouch! I bought the similar coffee table but just inverted where the top is solid and the bottom is broken up…
What did you end up getting? I mainly made the choice because I was focusing more on something that would not look too big as I can only have a small coffee table…
Love your video, lots of great advice when I purchased my new home.THANK YOU
Nick, your and my tastes are polar opposites, but I still love you!
wishing for your video on using antique or vintage furniture, especially that piece you fell in love with that maybe doesn't fit the styles you discussed (boho, scandi, etc.) Like a mid 1800's corner cabinet? Or a wild early 50's piece that is not quite midcentury modern?
Also - they have recently added the option to sort by things that are actually deliverable in a few days. That helps a lot. It is funny to watch the number of blue chairs that match your filtered search drop from 12,752 to 4 when you add in the deliverable in 2-5 days filter.
Would you mind sharing the color of the dark cabinet in the background and the white wall color? Very pretty
Hello how are you doing 👋👋👋👋
Now that's funny! I just bought a blue-grey/beige/tan version of the Shankle rug on Amazon by another manufacturer for my home office. It's half the price of Wayfair.
Like I said, Wayfair is nice but it is a bit overpriced on some items. Better to buy when they are on sale.
I would agree with the leather/faux leather. I've never had one last a long time.
That high-contrast black & green rug looks like a quilt pattern to me. I can’t see it as anything else.
I feel proud of myself because I’m planning on buying one of the rustic alternative cabinets you showed to the tacky shabby chic ones 😊
I bought a "distressed wood piece with the different colored doors in the polls a couple years ago. And then I just painted the outside and left the doors in the various colors it looks great. But yeah distress can really look like it ran through a sawmill.
This video was definitely needed!!! Great advice as always!
Btw, love the wooden wall beside the blue behind you... wish to see more detail... planning to do a two tone kitchen using those colors❣️
I DETEST those padded faux leather dining room chairs 🙈 I would love nothing more than you designing my interiors. I love your style so much.
Yes bought distressed wood piece of ick. But Ipainfed them and gorgeous.
Wayfair Renovo Ottoman with my Ikea strandmon green velvet chairs. Waiting on my House of Hackney cushions. 🤩
I love that you’re providing this information but I’m not clear on whether you’ve actually seen these products or you’re just looking at them on the website? Makes a big difference whether you’ve seen them in person in terms of quality, durability, and how they were made.
I have always been reluctant to buy from Wayfair (for the longest time I didn’t know if it was legit). This video was really helpful. As always I love your content.
They are legit and have good stuff, but mind you, they sometimes overcharge for things. Better to search their inventory and compare the same item you are looking for at other retailers for price comparison. I had found out many times the item they have is cheaper at another retailer.
Hi Nick. Please make a video on living room furnitures for small condo living. Thank you.
A lot of these things look like things I would find at a friend's parents house in like 2007
😂 oh 2007 is sooo long ago!
Hard to hear about the glass coffee tables since I've been saving up for a Noguchi Table 🙈
Those are gorgeous 🤩
You do you.
That's an iconic design, so I think it's exempted. 😉. Just stock up on glass cleaner..
How come I found this video on a blog while searching for nightstands...and the exact look I was going for was the "chippy/washed/shabby-chic" look. I feel like you just roasted me..now I'm rethinking my plan 😂😂
I feel seen when you mention items I have in my home that you approve of. Haha 😄
