That's not a D-ring you have attached to the float, it's actually called a carabiner and those particular ones aren't very strong or durable and should really only be used to hold your keys. I would strongly recommend getting some spring link snap hooks in either a stainless steel or zinc plated carbon steel. Last a lot long and are much more secure. That overhand loop is okay-ish, but I would use it in a cow hitch set up to keep it in the proper orientation or use a triple fisherman's knot.
