I have all the parts such as motors, ball screws and electronics for the upgrade and as soon as the mechanical design is completed, then I will start making the plates, brackets and other parts for the assembly. Currently designing the X axis (cross slide) way covers. Hence why I came across your vid by googling way covers.
Just started today adding black fabric way covers (bought @Ali) to my Opti D 650. Was looking good "so far", bolted them down to some angled Aluminium brackets, mounted with some cheap Magnets to the bed carriage... Until your video popped up lol, now it's just another way cover I guess. Really nice one you got there! Now powdercoat it in RAL 7035 :).
Nice work. As I watch chips fall on the cover, it reminds me of way wipers for my lathe's ways. They are a medium rubber cut with a bevel. The thickness of the rubber sets the springiness of the wiper and the chamfer sets the friction. The chamfer faces inward so the seal has a square edge to push chips away rather than funneling bits under the seal. The UHMW you are using will be durable but I think it will not seal well. Lots of little chips will get dragged around, scratching up the top of those covers. Also, the magnets would not work in my shop. Perhaps you do not work with ferrous metals often but I've come to hate permanent magnets because they are festooned with chips and resist all manner of cleaning.
Everything you mention is correct. My set up is not perfect but it does a reasonable job at keeping the ways clean. Yes, I mainly play with aluminium:)
Nice project. One thing though, you should never let a loose piece of material go free between the blade and fence. You are seriously lucky it chose to fly straight back rather than getting raised and flung at you or somebody else.

That's similar to JB weld in that it's an epoxy resin based repair product.
