That last Scotsman is actually an A3 as she has the protruding superheater header covers. This is the main, functional part of the A3 upgrade done in 1947. She didn't actually recive her banjo dome untill 1954 when the conversion from left to right hand drive was also done.
Beautiful collection you have there John. i have quite the collection of Scotsmans. did a video on them a while ago. but ive got another since. all mine are hornby. bit of history, the flying scotsman only had a corridor tender from 1928-1936. so she never had a corridor in the BR days. when she was converted to A3, she was also converted to left hand drive, thus the vacuum pipe changes side. your blue one has a historically innacurate tender, i know there was a hornby set that was in BR express blue, but it had the non corridor larger tender, i wonder if yours has been swapped over, of if it is possibly an earlier model that was made with the wrong tender. from what i remember she never actually had 2 numbers at once. in january 1946 she was renumbered to 502, in may 1946 she was again renumbered to 103. the model captures her as she was in 2011, in the great hall in NRM York. that is one of my cherished models! speaking of numbers she was built in 1923 with the number 1472. It wasnt until 1924 that she received her name and the number 4472. then in 1946 she has 502 then 103. then, BR took over and renumbered all lner locos with a prefix of '60'. shes a stunning loco, she truly is, and you have a brilliant collection there. its rare to see a collection of flying scotsmans that rivals my own! fantastic!
A nice collection of the FS loco's and the little history lesson John. I have the two FS twin tender loco packs, a FS set variant from the early 2000's, and another one that I got 2nd hand. The only loco's I have as a large collection of is the A4s. I have the 2nd TGG set of six, the 4x Silver Jubilees, the 3x Bachmann wooden box set, the mid 2000 super detail Mallard, the 2000 BR Green Silver Fox, A spare Golden Fleece loco body that needs a chassis. Out of all the A Class variants I have, A1 x3, A2 x1 CotN, A3 x2 and A4 x15. So as you can gather the A Class is my most fave steamers and would like to have the Royal Train and also the Blue Peter to add to my A list.
I want to correct you at 2:50 in terms of the livery as that isn't actually BR Blue, it's actually BR Experimental Purple, as it has red lining, instead of black and white.
I think its worth pointing out Sir William was not bankrupted. The engine was in a dreadful state when he and Pete Waterman sold it to Tony Marchington. My uncle fired it just prior to the firebox failure that put it out of action and he was not impressed. They simply had had enough of it.
You haven't got Flying Scotsman in her appearance as a British Railways engine (her current livery). This being with the smoke and double chimney. Great video by the way.
She started life as an A1 and was rebuilt to A3 spec as far I know from book I have been reading on her from trip took she hauled two years ago still not got hole way through the book only read in parts will ready hole book one
So I finally get a scotsman to add to my inherited trains and now youtube tells my ocd that not only are there several different styles but several different colours too? My wallet ain't gonna like this new information at all 🤣
Fantastic collection 👌! Great video John!
