Last year I set up a portable garage like yours. It was screwed in the ground but two days of high winds blew it into a barb wire fence, bent alot of the tubing. I'm hoping to get it up this fall now that it's cooling down.
Glad you got it turned upright and you're safe and sound. Put the tarp over the garden sites yo kill weeds.

You guys are so awesome! It's been pretty cool watching Gina get more and more involved in the homestead and videos. I pray my family and I can soon start a homestead of our own. It's been my dream for a long time. Watching you two tackle all these tasks together, is very inspiring to me! I pray that God continues to bless your beautiful family.

You look refreshed and fulfilled since leaving your 9-5. Happy Wednesday & Happy Homesteading!

Yes , that wind was a few nights ago..it was VERY strong..and the rains were plentiful..surprised we didn't lose power..I think the only thing that saved our hoop house from blowing away or toppling over was that we sand bagged it around the bottom..that was a good test for sturdiness..

I had a two car wide cover it shed. I framed the tubes with metal studs and sided it with vinyl siding. Kept a tent roof. Had double barn doors with gate legs and interior locking hardware. Had an exterior man door in it. We.lived on the cliff at the Sound in CT. I anchored the entire shed with large ground auger anchors at least three feet deep. Shed stood 17 years until I sold. It withstood many head on hurricanes. Replaced the roof every 5 years. Excellent storage shed for us.

We had the same weather last night. The wind was not supposed to whip up until around two-ish in the morning but surprised us at around 7. As I look at the sunrise, there are far fewer leaves on the tree tops this morning. Fortunately, yesterday was demo day in a small, spare room in preparation for a new well.

Hi, Al. We had our quansit hut land clear across the property in a high windstorm. One of my husband's co-workers told us that if we fill each of the legs with sand, it remains anchored in high winds. We followed his suggestion when we rebuilt. That was 2012. There have been zero problems since then... and we have had winds as high as 55 mph during the intervening time period. Hope Bob's suggestion helps you, as well! Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA - 10/22/2019.

Al look into buying shade cloth or shade netting to put on that frame then you can use it for shade in the garden or pasture for the pigs. Cut it in half use half attached to the PPM and the other half as garden bed shade. You can buy 4 pieces of square 1" tubing to use as the legs and buy a nice welder to weld the new shades and any other farm projects that come your way.

Gina>Baking Tip-Breads are finicky about the weather & humidity. Never add all your liquids in at one time. Sometimes you'll need it all like in dry weather, sometimes you'll need less like in rainy weather. Adding more flour if your dough is too wet will make your dough tough.
I learned that trick from an elderly lady with 50 years baking experience. I'm 66 & have been using that trick for a while.

Just sell it or give it away and create good karma. It s great for a Startup temporary solution, some young kid starting out until decent sheds can be built. Go aluminium-free..a soft material that is not sturdy but has the advantage of not rusting and that's about all.

I have one of those. I put down pressure-treated half-lapped 2 by 10s for a foundation. Anchored the 2 by 10's to the ground with rebar driven vertically into the ground. Covered that with a large heavy-duty silver tarp from HFT. This provides a dry floor with a raised rim around it, so water draining past it passes harmlessly under the floor and continues downhill without getting inside. I then erected the shelter on top. I anchored the bottom of the shelter frame to the 2 by 10s with lags through the bottom rail and tarp. Each frame joint was reinforced with a pop rivet to prevent heavy winds and shaking causing the joints to come apart. Used four HFT orange ratchet straps to maintain tension from side to side at the header. Installed velcro tape around the outside edge of the tarp-covered plank at the bottom to prevent wind getting beneath. Threw a large camouflage HFT tarp over the top to use as a rain fly and anchored it with rope and tent pegs. It's withstood 70mph winds and remained dry inside. I'm sure it could sustain much higher winds because it is rock solid and doesn't distort when the wind hits it.
It's been up for two years and looks like new because the rain fly absorbs most of the UV. The rainfly does deteriorate from the UV and needs to be replaced annually ($45) but the shelter remains unaffected and dry.
It's too bad you cut it up. Every soft spot/tear could have been patched with PVC cement using pieces from a cheap HFT tarp.

Well, I have purchased several Harbor Freight 10' X 10' portable sheds that look a lot like your shed. I have anchored them down with 2' long cement stakes. Seems to work so far. I have one left to assemble and am going to use your method of lining it with hay bales for some chickens. That is why my hubby made a pressure treated 4x4 sill plate on the 3 sides. Not the front. And secured the 4x4 down really well to the ground. Then put the shelter secured to the 4x4 and then we set up the shelter on the 4x4 foundation. Hubby had seen to many made into pretzels. Ours will withstand a hurricane. We made my greenhouse out of the same framework. And secured it the same way. Used plastic corrugated panels on the green house. Plan to put wood on the shelter next late spring that we just put up. Cheap permanent shelter.

Hi, I will give you a tasty recipe from Poland for patties, very tasty and quick to prepare, worth trying, you will certainly like it
    Cake
    50 dkg of flour
    3 dkg of yeast
    A heaped teaspoon of sugar
    Half a glass of milk
    Half a glass of water
    2 yolks
    1 egg
    salt
6 dkg of fat (I used melted butter)
We make a yeast, milk and sugar solution. Milk should be lukewarm. When the yeast starts, add it to the flour and salt and mix together. Then add egg and yolks and knead, watering as needed. Finally, we put in fat. The dough should be smooth and pull away nicely from the hand. Before we can make patties, we have to leave them to rise (they should double in volume).
    Meat stuffing
Half a kilo of ground pork or beef and pork
    1 large onion
Dry roll + hot broth to wet it
    Egg
    Spices (salt, pepper, garlic, marjoram)
Fry the meat together with chopped onion and spices in a small amount of oil and stew for several minutes. We dip the roll in the broth. We leave everything to cool, then grind together and add the egg.
    Cheese and mushroom stuffing
    5 large mushrooms
Volume of grated yellow cheese as much as the volume of stewed mushrooms
    Salt and pepper
    egg
Chop the mushrooms finely and stew until tender with spices and a little butter. When they cool down, mix them with cheese and egg.
    Execution
Divide the grown dough into 12 equal pieces. We form oval fritters, on which we put the stuffing in the middle. We wrap, carefully gluing the edges. Joining is a bit visible, so we serve joining down;) Fry in a deep fryer in hot oil until gold. Serve with beetroot beetroot soup
Greetings from POLAND and TASTY :-)
PS.My english is not very good but I am still learning :-)

If you take the frame of that shelter and get green house poly vinyl you can make yourself a small high tunnel.

We have a shelter like this in one of our wooded pastures and I found it slightly tipped over the other day.... this makes me nervous for winter!

  • @sandrat5971
    @sandrat5971 4 года назад

You should build a kaboda carport around the tent frame like the first goat barn. In spring it could be a goat nursery and in winter a kuboda house. You probably have most of the lumber and stuff you need. Then Gina could her carport.

A trick I found to get a few more eggs as Winter comes on is to get a solar path light for the coup. When shopping for it, get one of the kind that has a little remote solar panel. Some, most, have the panel built into the lid or top, but a few have a small arm linked to the panel that can be taken off by a screw or two, and some are just two pieces to begin with. You just need one that the panel can be mounted outside, and the light inside. You can usually find these on sale in the Fall in the $10 range. They are not that bright and obnoxious, and most lose some of their battery capacity after being used a while. Depending how sunny it was, a new one may give you a light for 4-6 hours, but after a few months, may only last a couple of hours. A few hours is plenty. I prefer that to them lasting too long. They are lightweight, cheap, and don't need cords, but give you just enough light to gather eggs after dark (like you, I'm far enough North, that it'll soon be dark by 5:00 pm, and I'm not home from work yet), and it still is just enough light too to trick the chickens that the days aren't quite as short.

Gina, excellent suggestion to use the Kubota to drag the portable shed! That was quite the wind storm we got, not surprised that the shed toppled over, despite being anchored down! Soooooo many big trees were blown over around the area, too!

High winds are notorious for tearing roofs off buildings and uprooting trees (both which are anchored)...glad your quonset hut didn't make it any further that it did, if the fence hadn't been there - things could have been worse. • @andreewert1142

Yes, maybe cover the top with planks, anchor it well by tying it to some rocks and enclose one side to cut the wind for hem goats...put it where you want them to graze.I went camping in Mattalah in Greece and it is was so windy that I held my tent in place on the sand by attaching each corner to big rocks. Same idea. It's only quality is its Mobility. Maybe , put a skid under it , a 2x4 platform on skids or wheels to give the thing some stability. That way, you can move it where you want.
