True story. My ex-best friend lived in a very nice apartment Uptown. Her rent was $17 (seventeen dollars) per month. She was on Section 8. At the time she had 2 children. Only stipulation was she couldn't have anyone living with her. She moved her children's father in the apartment. HUD came by and did a surprise inspection and could tell a man lived there. She told HUD she can have whoever she wanted to live with her. She was evicted. Clearly one of the dumbest decisions of her life.

It happened to me years ago, landlady wanted me gone for reporting her to housing code enforcement and started an eviction. Yes the are. My friend just moved out of a complex because they raised her rent to $1,500 for a one br and started accepting Section 8. The apartment isn’t nice enough for market rate tenants to be willing to pay that much but the Section 8 tenants don’t pay the full amount. The government pays it. The owner is making a bunch more money. I had a similar experience at an apartment complex years ago. Once the owner started accepting Section 8, it became very difficult for the rest of us to live there. But they weren’t evicting the problematic people. Before long most of the prior tenants had moved out.

There are people who have been abusing the system forever. The real and PRIMARY reason landlords are refusing program rent at higher rates now is because of housing market demand: higher demand means you can charge more and you have more potential tenants to choose from. Programs like Sect 8 put a cap on how much rent u can charge. It's more profitable to NOT participate.

I worked for Section 8 and if you sub lease or have anyone other than the lease holder living with you or illegal drug activities you are subject to lose your voucher!!!

It’s not a section 8 apartment, it’s rent controlled. Probably one of the last rent controlled apartments in NYC. She’s been there 20 yrs. I used to live in a tent stabilized apartment which are getting harder to find as well here. You can sublet your rent controlled/ rent stabilized apartment but I believe there is a cap on how much you can charge someone.

    • @DarkPhoenixSaga

She wasn't in section 8. She had a regular apartment with Rent Control. Rent control was available in NYC in the 70s to keep the landlord for raising the rent too much. She probably inherited the apartment from her parents since Rent control is not available to any new tenants for a long time. Those who had Rent control can keep the apartment until they die or their kids can inherit it.

I understand it's illegal, however he is just as guilty to me because it sounds like he knew it was illegal and took advantage also. I think that because she says he could stay until he found another apartment. He was getting a good deal even though she was making money off it.

    • @CraiiZeD

the only reason he found such affordable rent was because it had been rent controlled for 20 years! People today do not get the same opportunities as they did in the past, and they have to do what they can to find an affordable home.

@CraiiZeD oh yeah agree 100%. He should have not $h!t on her though. To me he (and the other girl she rented the room to) wanted to get her in trouble because their meal ticket was pulled and wanting to come back home. Again i know it's illegal, but what would anyone do? They benefited also, they only got mad when they could not benefit anymore. Yep, good old judge judy holding up the laws of the land 🙄. Idk, I'm torn on this case.
