I first wanted to thank you for sharing a part of your life with us. And I am so so sorry about the tremendous loss in your life. Sometime when I feel like my life is really shitty, it really does make me feel better to hear that other people are struggling as much as I am or even worse off. You seem like a really lovely person, outside and in. I'm sending you much love and care.

I feel you. My perfume obsession started when my dad died. Then my aunt died and my father in law and my uncle just passed two weeks ago. All this in a year. I just need to be distracted. And have something to look forward too. My father in law was such a shock. We were really close he does right before it was a year after losing my dad. He died two days before my 20th anniversary. And right before his 55. I'm so sad

Thank you for being so vulnerable with us. Listening to you talk I just wanted to give you a hug… I’m so sorry for your losses. I also buy perfume when I’m sad or stressed, and then they remind me of the sadness and I get overwhelmed by the huge task of decluttering, regret having wasted money, wonder what kind of activity I do instead of shopping for perfume. I paint but I have a hard time making myself paint when sad (although that seems counterintuitive). Love and hugs to you- thank you for sharing your life with us.

Courage and faith Laura. I lost my mom as well on this exact date, one year ago and i can really understand and feel for you. You might be smiling, but deep inside, only you know how much pain you are dealing with. We do tend to buy things when we suffer, to brighten us up, however you know, this will not take our pain away. I admire your strength, and thanks for sharing this with us. Many many hugs to you 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💝💝💝💝

I don't have stuff either. I hate clutter. I loved this at first and now sometimes I'm so overwhelmed. Never know what to wear. But I have so many friends because of this. When my dad passed last July I had no one. No friends and had lost almost all of my family. My husband has never been someone you can talk to about emotional things. So I was completely with myself

I totally understand and I’m happy it’s brought you connection and community. We all need that ❤️‍🩹 And, also, this is just my experience and where I’m at currently but it doesn’t mean having a large collection of perfumes is bad…just not right for me.

@@LauraSparkles_ For sure. I don't feel like you're saying that. I look at my collection and it makes me sad. I'm decluttering all the time. I definitely need something manageable. I just see those bottles as a visual representation of my sadness. I do get overwhelmed by them. It's definitely a love hate.

Laura, with every bottle you sell, you are moving forward. Please be proud of yourself, as I’m sure your entire audience is. You have great courage to recognize where you may have gone off the trail, and have worked so hard to get yourself on a better path. And it appears you are doing this alone - no easy feat. Take a deep breath, and as you exhale, remember that there are happier times ahead. Put one foot in front of the other and proudly walk out of the forest of grief into sunny skies and beautiful, fragrant air. You will soon be in safe surroundings with new friends and all the joy you deserve.

My perfume addiction started when my mom passed away. I first went in search of her old signature scent, and then the obsession commenced. It’s been over two years, and though I generally think of any addiction as a bad thing, I was desperate for a little comfort. I wasn’t deferring pain, it came at me full force every day; for a while I’d find myself unable to breathe any time I was alone with my thoughts. I needed something. It’s been less than a week since I broke down in front of a total stranger. I’ve lost two other relationships within the past couple weeks. My in laws, who hate everyone, have made it clear they hate me too. I knew it was a probability, and though they can’t feel enough to care at all about the loss of our relationship , I can’t help but allow them to hurt me. Seems unfair.
I’m not doing great, but well enough that it’s time to let go and try moving forward.
I cried when you shared your story because I totally understand. Time helps, but even more knowing I’ll see my mom again one day. I hope you are comforted by that too. ❤

I feel and understand you Laura. My perfume obsession started when my husband died in July 2019. And then my father nine months later. I was so sad and needed a distraction. I went from 5 bottles to almost 300. I'm trying to reduce on my purchases and I have been giving away to friends and family. I'm now at 91 bottles. Hoping to go below 50 bottles before the end of the year. Sending hugs ❤

You are not alone love. Dealing with grief and loss takes time to heal. People develop this compulsive behaviour I guess which is not in itself healthy as you find it can be overwhelming, but recognising it and making slow steps to reducing this compulsiveness is a positive way forward. One step at a time. I believe in replacing bad habits with new positive ones is a good way of tackling obsessive, compulsive behaviours. Just being grateful for the simple things in life, appreciate these moments and understand that we don't need all this stuff to be happy as these materialistic things are passive short term gratifications, which ultimately do not lead to a healthy mental wellbeing.

  • @Jenn_N

    Hi Laura,
thanks for sharing your process with us. It's hard to admit to an addiction and then address it. It can be any habit or thing being used to cope with social and emotional challenges in our lives. It's quite easy to fall into the habit of overspending, with online shopping making it so very easy. I think the pandemic caused a lot of people to do this.
I hope you get more enjoyment out of what you choose to keep. If your things feel like a burden, or make you feel bad then letting them go makes sense. So long as it doesn't trigger a new cycle of buying and purging things.
Many people who focus on 'decluttering' seem to use it as a reason to keep buying and then again declutter. It's still a wasteful cycle. I think deep down, it reflects that someone wants to change or is still unhappy. It temporarily makes the person feel a sense of being productive. But, it's kind of a false thing because it doesn't bring genuine meaning or purpose to their life, it's still just stuff.
I have a ridiculous number of cookbooks. It's as though I think having these cookbooks will give me the motivation to cook more, or be more creative... But... I still ultimately need the energy and time to purchase and cook the food. The money for the often hard to find ingredients. The books don't cook for me. 😆And, I can feel overwhelmed at some point with too many choices.
I think sometimes we learn more from our mistakes, so long as we stop repeating them. 😉
I hope to hear more about what you are enjoying wearing from your collection, as long as you enjoy making the videos. I hope making videos make you feel happy, not bad. 💕🙃
    Take care 😊🌸💛

You are brave and wonderful and remind me so much of my big sister Jenn. She passed away at 50 just two years ago and my dad this year at 73. Grief hits us all differently. I definitely have a hoarding tendency even though it doesn’t get insane. I so so feel you on this. Thank you for putting yourself out there and sharing your journey. It inspires me. A book that helped me a lot and shared so many different people’s ways in it is titled “Stuff: Cumpulsive Hoarding and The Meaning of Things.” You will feel seen and not crazy. You are a wonderful person and it is always hard to let go of things we attach meaning to. I do it too and each day is a journey towards freedom.
