  • Howdy, folks.
    I spent the last month with the Kobo Sage and Kobo Libra. Needless to say, I did a lot of reading. But I also did a deep dive into what separates these two eReaders.
    Including whether they can go in the shower...

    Great comparison, A+ for being so thorough and honest about the pros and cons. It's those little details like the mentioned necessary eye movements and reading distance adjustment that made the difference for me, thank you.

    I've only started researching ereaders in the last few days but have watched a fair few videos. Yours has been hands down the best and most comprehensive review and has changed my opinion of the libra 2 from thinking its too expensive and premium for my meagre needs to thinking that it's a bargain and incredible value. Cheers

      @John Smith Great to hear another glowing review of the Libra!
      The biggest things for me are having a top notch display that is larger than 6" and being waterproof. And I had been recommended the PaperWhite by my boss, but then I realised that the Australian libraries have staggering amounts of books in epub format. Good to hear that you and many others feel that the Kobo is superior in almost everyway as a few days ago I was almost begrudging about the idea of having to spend more to get access to epub files however I now realise that is going to save me a lot of money in the long run. I just hope that the user experience is as enjoyable for me as others find it and I get a good few years out of the device.

      @@mobilesyrup I went with the libra 2. Incredibly easy to use with sideloading and overdrive. I'm really loving the asymmetric design which makes it very pleasant to hold, even with the sleepover on. Also the 7" screen I feel is a great size' better than a 6 at mimicking the size and experience of a book whilst not sacrificing much on portability. I've also been reading more too, though I've only had the device a week, that's what it's all about. Thanks again for helping me come to an informed decision!!

    Have both. In fact I got the Sage despite its (manageable!) limitations: the battery needs to be recharged more often, I get about 15 hours reading time rather than 20-25 on the Libra 2. But the screen is bigger and I often takes notes while reading for my job.
    The Libra 2 (in white) is just a little bit smaller. I got it for my wife who has better eyesight than me and don’t take notes.
    At the beach I had to stop reading because the black finish makes the reader hot real fast while the white Libra 2 has not heat issue il under the sun.
    Moral of story: next time I’ll get the Sage again in white! 😜

    You can regulate the margins in your Kobo devices, so just make them wider, so the reading surface is smaller, if that is more comfortable. Not a big con. For note taking, it is more convenient to have 8 inches (or more), so it is a nice middle ground to be able to do both: note-taking and e-reading.

    Paperback books are actually over 10" in size. The issue isn't the size of the Sage, the issue is the size of the bezels and the incorrect aspect ratio of the display itself, and the fact that you cannot hold the Sage's page margins like you do with a real book. What I'm actually looking for is a 10.1" trade paperback sized e-ink reader with the same aspect ratio as those real books... and here's the kicker: no bezels.
    If there was an e-ink reader on the market that size with no bezels and where you in fact hold onto the page itself people would love it. It would mirror the experience of reading a real book. That's the experience I'm after. And there are ways to add page turning such as swipes and pressure sensitive squeeze gesture along the margin of the page to turn the page. That's the product I want. Mirror the real reading experience as close as possible.

    I got the Kobo Libra 2 as my first e-reader ever recently and can still return it if I want. I am really content with it so far, but I am considering returning it to get the Sage. Note-taking and dropbox support are nice features but no necessity, and shorter battery life is not a problem for me.
    What I really wonder about is whether the bigger screen makes a big impact on the eyes while reading. I am on my phone quite a bit and so I was wondering if having a larger screen to read on, might be easier and less straining on the eyes. Does the screen size matter when it comes to ease of reading, or is the distance to the face and letter size really more important in this regard? Anyone's input would be appreciated.

    • @mobilesyrup
      @mobilesyrup  Год назад +1

      Sorry for the late reply! Glad you're liking the Libra 2 so far. The extra screen space is great on the Sage, but because you can change the text size and spacing on both the Libra and Sage, it's really up to personal preference. If you're going to be using it for taking notes though, that would be a reason to jump up to the Sage. Otherwise, the Libra 2 is just as comfortable for reading! - Chris

    I bought the Kobo sage for the 8" screen size and LOVE it. I wish there was more options for 8" e ink readers. The smaller screens require more page turns and seems to jolt me out of my reading trance which is why I'm no longer on my paperwhite or oasis. The weight on the Sage is fine and not an issue. The battery life is good and with the USB C, I can easily charge up if I need to. I use my Sage for reading and not note-taking (since I can do that on an iPad or phone) so there is no noticeable battery decline and after a day of use, I'm still around 75%. I know I'm not going to get the kindle battery life of six weeks, but don't need that since I always have a USB C available to top it off.

    as for the "too big for books" issue - i usually set my margins quite big when reading a book on my forma - but for manga and pdfs, having 8 inches is perfect.
    Also, I use KOReader for the vastly improved UI and options.
    It's a BIT of a compromise, but in turn you get the best of both worlds - usable for novels as well as pdf and manga, while not being a huge 11 inch honker.
    Also, with being able to remove 'dead areas' from PDFs with KOReader, the actual content is not that much smaller than in 'real life' - even with most A4 sized books.

    Sage has powerful Quad Core Processor which makes general interactions smooth and responsive, Wi-Fi 5GHz which is much faster & consistent than regular 2.4ghz, note taking layer which can come handy and Dropbox support for easy file sharing. Yes, these all features drain down the smaller battery faster but you get far better overall usage experience than libra2. I haven't used a e-reader before and I'm not sure if this is enough storage.

    • @mobilesyrup
      @mobilesyrup  Год назад +1

      Hey! 32GB should be more than enough. Ebooks rarely go beyond 2-3MB, so if you're just reading, you won't ever have to worry about storage.
      Graphic novels will be a little larger, but you can always delete them and download them again if needed. Your info, such as which page you are on, will be saved to the cloud.
      If you'll be using your Kobo to listen to audio books, then you might eventually run out of space, depending on how many you want on the device at any one time.
      For most people though, 32GB is plenty of storage! I hope this helps. - Chris

    How does the Libra 2 handle manga?
    I’m looking at getting a Kobo as I struggle to hold larger manga (like hardcovers and omnibus) and it would be great to be able to take them with me without the extra weight and risk of damaging pages during travel.
    The weight of the Sage and the poor battery life aren’t ideal so I’m wondering if the Libra 2 is still a good choice for manga despite being a little smaller?
    Do you have any issues reading manga on it? Are there any downsides other than it being a little smaller than the ideal size?

    • @mobilesyrup
      @mobilesyrup  3 месяца назад +1

      Great question! I use the Libra 2 for reading manga all the time, so it's definitely a good device for it. There are some downsides though.
      Small text and details can be difficult to read if looking at a full page, so you'll probably need to zoom in occasionally. And depending on the format of the manga (epub, PDF, etc) the quality and ease of use can vary.
      With that being said, aside from the more detailed images and ease of zooming on a phone, I'd much rather read manga in my Libra than a smartphone. It feels more natural and it looks great. Not to mention there are plenty of great manga resources out there for e-readers! Check out the Internet Archive (archive dot org) for plenty of light novels and manga.
      It won't replace the feeling of reading manga on the page, but to me, it's the next best thing! Hope this helps! - Chris

      I have a libra 1 and I'm tempted to buy a libra 2 on the side as a backup and also I think the upgrade will be worth it. Libra 2 has faster page turns, and better contrast than the libra 1. It's also more responsibr. On my libra 1 annotations / highlights work OK but it's often slower than I'd like. I don't think it will make a massive difference on libra 2 vut still..libra 2 also supports audio books but I'd never use that tbh..
      That said 8" is actually the perfect home size to me. It would be comparable to a decent size book page. When the libra 1/2 are slightly smaller than a medium size book.
      I'd take the libra with me and have the sage at home. Only problem is that the sage has horrendous battery life apparently. Otherwise I'd buy it without a second thought

    I think audible access is probably not necessary? I think people these days all have smartphones and tablets? I am guessing that it is rare that people will have an ereader only and nothing else. I use my iPad for my audibles. Only thing I can think of is if you read a lot outdoors then an ereader may be good due to no glare BUT ipads have a better screen now where glare is not much of an issue anymore. I have first generation Libre and the Sage as well as Kindle Paperwhite Special Edition and the Oasis. I also have the new pink B&N reader. I have oddly large hands for a woman so I think the Sage is a good size for me also if you want a good note taking experience 8" seems to be better option ( more scribble room). The battery on the Sage lasts longer if you only read and do normal highlights. It seems writing with a stylus is the big battery drainer. Its not a deal breaker for I am charging my tablets and watches all the time anyways, might as well charge this. Over all The Sage is the nicest ereader I own. I always wanted an 8" and got tired of waiting on Kindle to come out with one. I also have the 7.8" Nook but The Sage just has a much better screen, better lighting.
