The thing I've noticed with sound alerts is they have to be used very VERY sparingly to be valuable. If you have a noise for every cast you'll tune it out and like you said you can't think. However sfx for something like a tank buster or a group fear (things that only happen maybe a handful of times throughout the key) are super useful to just reactively hit a button when you hear the sound.
One can also just enable sound and do that, and maintain some level of focus while playing so situational awareness can be maintained. I think it's funny, and fascinating, how hard our brains are working to avoid doing any work whatsoever.
@@gandalf8216 its not about avoiding work. Its managing mental bandwidth. While humans are fantastic multitasking creatures, there is a pretty hard limit. And high level m+ really pushes how much mental bandwidth you have and where to direct it. All mechanics are easy in isolation, its when youre tracking 10 of them and watching your, buffs / debuffs the team calling shots, that something goes overlooked or missed, because we are only human. Thats where they come in. Youll never find high m+ players with weakauras for every mechanic. If they have a weakaura tracking something its almost always the case of them dying over and over and after watching vod review deciding that, "im unable to see this clear enough or its not apparent enough to me with all the rest going on so i need something more"

I mean I'd really appreciate a party member who can cover up for my own stupid mistake tbh, that's actually a really cool party member. However, I did healthstone to save myself either way :P So I corrected the mistake I made myself still. It was a self-caused close-call and this time I clutched it :P
when you make an addon noise that promotes an action it is very beneficial. like making a noise for 4-5 combos points or however many you want and it alerts you to use a finisher even if youre not paying close attn is nice I think, esp nowadays when the fights are so complicated you might die from watching combo points over watching mechanics.
This Jaedenar quest is no joke. The NPC will literally rush towards groups of mobs like she's on meth. I remember doing it with a pala buddy as a pala combo, aoe tank and healer, and we had no real issues but only because we were overleveled and slight overgeared, otherwise we would have died.

@11:50 to reply to the addons thing. I have one WeakAura that has a sound that I couldn't do without. It's a small bleep whenever my Feign Death resists (which is easy to miss without sound). I would agree with you that addons with sound are annoying, but there are really some exceptions.
That's what almost every wipe ever has been. Now it's just incentivized to publicize and highlight said moments that lead to wipes (solo or otherwise), where none was before. Nobody advertised them dying in WoW before.

All my alerts, that involve sounds are set for very specific things. This allows me to focus my thinking, and react passively by sound memory.
The amount of paladins I see press bubble and then not immediately hearth out....
