Having seen these guys live a few times, I can say that the experience of two drummers = more than just twice the drumming. The relentless drive that they create as a through line compliments the space that the rest of the band creates. It just wouldn’t be as powerful with two sticks and two feet.
I've noticed as a long time fan of Osees that they've become much more rhythmically sophisticated since adding an extra percussionist. It seems to complicate and progressivize their sound; they take their influences (punk, metal and especially motorik beat Krautrock) and blend them into something truly mind blowing. Check out their recent Levitation Sessions to see what I mean.
Well they're both clearly not playing the same thing in this song. One hand you get multiple rhythms overlaying eachother, and on the other hand you get more energy and volume.
Only selfless playing can create room for another drummer in the band. And in this case, The Oh Sees are pretty much perfecting the two drummer thing they've been doing
What I like about the Oh Sees and the 2 drummers is the energy and there is an interesting interplay between them. In their studio cuts you can hear how each drummer accents their songs in unique ways, one is more top or cymbal snare based player and the other is more bottom, kick and toms. But they both come together at points as well. The first time I listened to them I couldn’t figure out how one drummer was doing so much, how’d he have a flam and snare accent or have the ride and Tom fill together? When I realized it was 2 drummers and not doubling down on tracks in the studio I wanted to listen more to the drummers interplay. Anyway thanks again and happy belated Easter
Watching Paul and Dan drum live is out of this world. Hardly have seen two drummers as perfectly timed playing together to make a larger sound than both parts is incredible.
One of my favorite bands since the Carrion Crawler days and i FINALLY got to see them live in September. And let's just say my neck still hasn't recovered. Your Patreon subscribers know what they're doing clearly.
Crumbling Castle by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard live on KEXP would be another great example of a two drummer set up, with more of a prog feel :)
You should check out “Melvin’s” with their 2 drummer setup. Dale Grover and Cody Willis. Ones right handed the other left handed. Their kits mirror each other but with different size complimenting drum sizes and they share a couple of cymbals. It’s like one huge kit with players on the same kit. Check it out and it’ll answer your question as to “why 2 drummers”.
I'm always fond of the sonic quality of two drummers, and the Melvins with Dale and Cody is amongst my favorites. The live show of the full Houdini album seems as though it was straight up mixed for the drums. OSees 2-drummer line ups are next level, the best live show money can buy.
Why have 2 drummers? Because I love drums...and that's double the amount of regular drums...and double is better than half of that which is the regular amount of drums. My college roommate and I were percussion majors, we rented a house together, and we played the same band which had 2 drummers (us), and it was AWESOME! We did it because it was awesome.
After having seen them live quite a few times now I really think it adds hugely to the stage presence, after all, they’ve been put up front centre stage and it’s just amazing to watch them pound through all those heavy songs, whether it makes a difference in sound I have no idea but Ive gone deaf for a week after one of their gigs and now I wear earplugs when I see them.
They have two drummers because they can, because it's fun, because the dynamic is INSANE. Go and see them live and you will understand how SONICALLY it sounds with 2 drums. (AND ALSO IT'S FUCKING ROCK'N'ROLL!)
Texture, broader dynamic range, syncopation, polyrhythms, presence/energy(in a live setting, such as this, it will rip your face off). Also, it's just fun as hell. Oh Sees are obviously on one end of the spectrum. If one were seeking a more nuanced approach to double drumming, I would suggest some post rock, like Tortoise "TNT", or "Reitschule" by Do Make Say Think. Somewhat ironic I'm watching this right after the Turner/Lang drumgasm, which provides its own answers to your inquiry :) Love your channel Andrew, keep it up, we are the 7%!!!
The Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, and Doobie Brothers had dual drummers during at least part of their history that I think usually played in unison. I wonder if it started before drum kits were routinely mic’d, in order to give the drums more presence.
You kinda got the same thing with King Gizz and the Lizz Wizz....... I think we're one sitting, or standing/dancing rather, in the audience I think it would make more sense. Probabaly adds more power to the sound and energy to the vibe and the bands stage presence. I don't know.........that was pretty commanding, pretty godly even. For like a garage rock type band I gotta say that could probably get a mosh pit started.
Because two are more than one. But in all seriousness, this band does not fuck around. Their shows are a full blast sonic pummeling, and those drummers are front and center leading the charge. It's not for everyone, but as a fan I can't say I've seen another band quite as powerful.
Just saw this guys in London, must say I like how the drummers are fully in the front and you can see so well the stuff they're playing. Also managed to have a beer and a chat with Paul after the gig and he was really nice and took the time to talk with me for a while. They have incomparable energy live, I think you gotta actually see it to understand what I mean.
The two drummers is a key part of this band to me. Before I knew they had two, I would try to play along and wonder “how tf are they doing that” lmao. Creates awesome drum parts and a full and almost “sloppier” sound in the best way possible.
Right I get this. 2 drummers. I think the band is heavily influenced by an 80s punk band called RudimentaryPeni who have the same vibe and also late 60s rock like Led Zep or something like. Listen to ‘ Crazy Chain’ by Rudimentary Peni the drums aren’t backing music it’s front centre along side the singer.
I don't know but I'd guess you can come up with some unique arrangements. One dude keeps a steady beat and the other goes off the plantation so to speak.
Thee Oh Sees used to have one drummer, two guitars and no bass player and a female background vocalist who pretty much played the tambourine and sang...wonderfully. I've seen them twice in the old school lineup and have been a longtime fan of the band through the name changes....now Oh Sees. Mmmmmmm....i don't understand the two drums thing either. John, the founder and principle for the band, is an interesting guy....and I reckon that's just the way he wants the drums.
Listen to this performance again and really focus on the drums. They play different things, like a rhythm and lead guitarist. It creates more interesting and complex drumming
If you want a straight forward answer as to why 2 drummers are superior, check out this quick video of them performing "Voice in the mirror" ruclips.net/video/QP3fUOV8uos/видео.html
Ok, so how have we not seen a Slipknot drum video? I just realized that we haven't had one yet after watching this video lol. Guys....... Can the #RooneyWarriors come together and get Andrew to watch one? Let's get 100 likes on this comment
In this video I didn‘t see any benefit. They were playing nearly exactly the same stuff and not really adding more to the song than one drummer would and they have to be careful not to get in each others way. I ususally see more then one drummer when it‘s drums only and they want to show how synchronized they can play or want lots of different rhythms entwhined with each other, or someone does a basic groove and others solo over it. I don‘t understand it here. yes it‘s loud... that‘s it?
Two drummers... I guess it's just a trend, it doesn't bring nothing special to the music (which is good). It would be like having two bassists playing the same thing, ou two guitarists or two whatever.
A trend? ever heard of King Crimson or The Allman bros, James Brown, Grateful dead etc? they all had two drummers and they go way back to the 60s. And if you actually watch and listen they aren't playing the same thing. they sync up, and split up when it matters for the song. the same way a lead guitarist does with the rhythm guitartist
Dwyer's response to why he has two drummers: cause I want two drummers
FAIR ENOUGH!
Having seen these guys live a few times, I can say that the experience of two drummers = more than just twice the drumming. The relentless drive that they create as a through line compliments the space that the rest of the band creates. It just wouldn’t be as powerful with two sticks and two feet.
Oh Sees still slayed with just one drummer though
@@totalgarbage2053 True dat!
They're absolutely huge in any room. I agree completely
Exactly. No RUclips video can convey the wall of noise and energy that smacks you at a live gig. They are simply incredible live.
I was at this gig and you couldn't have said it better!
This went right over this dudes head 🤣
Yeah man big time haha!!!
I love how his old ears just didn't get it 😂
Ooooh, man. Great answer. He just don't get it. What a fucking noob.
I have 50 year old ears and fucking love it!

I listen to those Levitation sessions regularly, oh sees at peak performance for sure
YES
Well they're both clearly not playing the same thing in this song. One hand you get multiple rhythms overlaying eachother, and on the other hand you get more energy and volume.
The drums are mabye the main Instruments in this band newer catalog
They are diggin derper into that

Yeah I need to revisit this band!

My thoughts exactly!

As a female drummer, this is my pornography. : D
(also have seen them live three times)

My guys a drummer, and the only thing he had to say was "Why do they have 2 drummers". Did u not listen to them play together
did you not hear them ? that’s why they have 2 drummers
The Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, and Doobie Brothers had dual drummers during at least part of their history that I think usually played in unison. I wonder if it started before drum kits were routinely mic’d, in order to give the drums more presence.
Wow that's a really interesting idea on it! Love it
James Brown had 2 drummers that played differently from one another making a cool layered drum sound
Why have two guitarists?
Lead drummer and rythym drummer.

It just Sounds so much better
playing together is something
If you ever get a chance to see them, do yourself a favor and go!
I will Reid!!

the holy is a finnish band with 2 drummers
Same reason you have 2 guitarists
Why have two drummers? Were you not paying attention to the song? Both drummers played different things. Also, bigger sound.....duuhhhh
Yeah, I don't get that question. These guys are awesome together.
Fact. You’d think a drummer teacher would be able to hear that
use to be one ,and now there is two ! that why they have two drummer ! njoylife
LOL. Fair call
They look awesome, is like a mirror or some kind of machine. I dont know if it matters at all, but im a visual artist
Insightful analysis!!
Thanks Josh!
The Airplane! clip killed me🤣🤣
Is he a drummer ?
2 Drummmers = more energy
NICE!
Lead singers fave band is Can. Can's drummer Jaki Liebezeit. Say no more.
This guy even drum?
Playing up high doesn't make you "likeTom Morello." : )

3 in sync drummers would be cool af
RUclips “Oh Sees three drummers” lmao
It's as though you, a self-proclaimed drum teacher, are now the student. Do you seriously not know why some bands choose 2 drummers?
I’m a student till the day I die.
Only foor the cool of it.

MORE NOISE! Literally, that's all I got. Perhaps one can drum solo while other is keeping the beat. It beats me.
Nope. No thanks. I've never liked the idea of two drummers and find it gimmicky.
Why is it a gimmick? It’s awesome!
how old are you?
It creates awesome sound. Why wouldn’t you want that
