can you run an air compressor with a power inverter from your truck / car?

short answer yes, but the air compressor must be 1 hp or less if you're using a 2000w inverter. it will run for a while with just the car battery, but I would recommend leaving your truck running.

If you guys want to calculate your wattage, multiply the volts times the amps which equals wattage. That number is running what it's not the starting wattage so you would typically double that number for Peak watts. For example of my 4 1/2 gallon husky 1.5 horsepower air compressor is 120 volts * 8.1 amps which equals 972 watts. You would double the Watts for the unit to start

@michaellassic6274 yes sir. I fitted my shed out completely with solar and it's not attached to my line voltage coming from my house anymore. I have a 2000 watt pure sine wave inverter that powers the eight Outlets I have inside of the shed, the two exterior lights, one is on a switch one is on a motion sensor for my dogs. I have all of my ego Lawn Care battery tools in there, most of my DeWalt tools are in there, the battery tender for my harley. I can pretty much plug any tool I have into that shed and it will run no problem. You have to be realistic with your power usage because I'm not going to be running 2 compressors, all of my lights and charging all of my batteries at the same time which would definitely max out the current system I have.
I only have three 100 W panels on top of my shed roof that go into a 30 amp charge controller with Breakers in between that thing get wired to the battery and then to the inverter which is hardwired to all of my shed Outlets and lights

There are some ways to do this depending on application and needs. They have 12v dc compressors with a tank that you can buy.

I don’t think that would matter unless you’re doing a bunch of sanding or using the blower continuously. Filling tires should work fine.
