  • Growing up on a Navajo reservation in rural Arizona, Derrick Begay always dreamt of making it as a professional cowboy. But the idea of someone from his tribe hitting the big time seemed out of reach-though folks, including his own father, had tried to do it, no Navajo had ever managed to.
After years of hard work, Begay finally succeeded, becoming one of the first Navajo cowboys to qualify for the national finals-and he’s gone on to compete there six more times.

I am not Native but grew up in a town with a reservation and have gone to school with Natives. Those kids have a lot more obsticles to over come in life to accomplish what this man has done. Much respect.

That’s all JB really pays attention to is the cowboys no matter what style BEFORE him. He loves to learn and he’s passionate about cows and he could rope and I bet win a ton if he didn’t ride bulls. He does it all day almost everyday at home. Watched it. One reason he’s so away at being a bull rider is he’s a great horseman and TRUST ME TO RIDE HORSES AND COLTS all the time IS HARD!!!!!! I personally know many a great bull rider who won’t ride one. They are even tricker. I trained colts for a great bull rider. I hope I can meet both of these guys 1 day.

At 9:50 is see Derrick's heart and who he really is inside. Huge compliment from Mauney and Murray as well. A home without running water, electricity, dirt floors, no TV, etc. That was how it was when I would visit my dad's parents in Arizona in a place called Harshaw. Old mining community in the mountains. Had a blast as a child with my cousins catching scorpions, tarantula's, snakes, skinning the snakes and riding our horses to a all in one market/post office/gas station where we'd sell the owner the skins for candy and soda. We thought we got the better deal. Simple life!
