Thank you for not editting out that mistake with the branch. I am very new to bonsai and so terrified to make mistake. I watch other people excute so "flawlessly", it hard to imagine me being so right all the time. Thank you for being real. :)

Don't be afraid to make mistakes! It is how you learn. No need to worry because broken branches can always grow back and there are always other ways to improve your design. Best of luck to you!

Excellent demonstration of how to deal with unexpected events, such as breakage. So glad you simply did not edited it out, truly a great teacher; you handled an upsetting incident with grace and composure.

I sincerely love this tree better with that branch removed. Playing on the “less is more” theme- the bottom structure now looks very ancient, as if it’s been around for a thousand years, and the top takes a modest form, sitting in “the shoulders of giants” as they say. I really love the new look.

It is a shame you broke that branch but it happens to all of us. I believe the top branch will do a nice comeback. Thank you for making us beginner's not fear breaking branches

Yes, I believe so too! Don't be afraid to make drastic moves to improve your bonsai. If a branch breaks, it will always grow back :)

Haha Actually, I like the after broken one. Now we see the beautiful trunk , before it was blocked by the broken branch.

I personally believe you will have a better tree when the branch to take its place grows as you say the tree has more balance without the broken branch, took make an observation about the branch just still attached I would have used super glue and clamp the two parts and it will heal, I have done this a few times on branches that are still just attached and the branch has recovered, it will be a branch later that may be a bit weak at the point mended so that needs be taken into account when working the tree, I mentioned before I love the idea of covering the whole of the inside of the pot when repotting with some sort of mesh screening to keep the roots from growing too long, will try this method in the spring with a couple of my trees and see the results over time, thank you for showing the branch breaking we all have done the same thing but not admitted it to anyone.

Thank you for showing us the work Milton. I suppose that in your climate the elm cork trees (and similar) do not lose all their leaves, but in my climate they do, so we usually wait until they lose all their leaves before repotting and redesigning.

If that works for you, then that's great! And thank you for sharing. Hopefully, your tips help others who live in the same climate as you. :)

In my eye, the tree looks better without the branch that was broken off. As you reflected it is a brittle tree and part of the trees life can tell the story that high winds have upon its life.

Extremely useful to watch this !
I think mistakes are at least as important for learning process, as are successes.
    Thank you !

At the beginning of the video I was thinking I didn’t really like that branch. Looked too straight before it branched out. I think the tree will look better in the long run without it.

Thank you for the video, It's important for newbies to know that it may happen. Anyway, I really do like the tree more after the branch is being removed. When I have to make severe bends in such thick branches, I prefer to saw the branch in a few key points, in order to create a soft curve.

Hi Milton, do you follow bonsai guidelines regarding branch structure pattern? Like if first branch is left, the second has to be right, then third is back and repeat. Or you just follow whatever makes the tree looks good?

Hi there! I like my bonsai to emulate nature and nature doesn't follow any strict rules, so no!

We’re all been here, but admittedly my plants are no where near as developed as this tree. 🍋
