I worked at the Waldenbooks for a while and was always in that Kmart. My manager would send me there to get supplies for our store: hand soap for the bathroom, stationary, and stuff like that.
I think the biggest mistake they made with that mall was changing it from the Gallery. They should have redid the Gallery, updated it, and really play on the uniqueness of the Gallery. They damn sure should not have messed with the food court. Everything that makes Philly, Philly, they are F’ing up and destroying. Now, there’s talks of redoing the Parkway and bring in commercial development. Can’t they just leave my city alone?!
Merry Christmas Captain! You are one of the ones who inspired me to make my videos. And be more of myself. Thanks to you my videos are getting better! Much love and respect! Go Phillies!
I'm so glad you've made this. I left Philly right before the "Fashion District" opened. I had so many memories in that Gallery, but I watched it die once already. Malls may be an outdated concept since I buy most of my stuff online.
The city is ALWAYS trying to do the next best thing and not planning it out! When the gallery came about on the heels of the area malls - people didn’t want to be bothered with its issues. Now they want to make a basketball arena, where do most of the people come from? They drive and the infrastructure can’t handle it… crazy!!
I remember getting a lot of Taco Bell at that food court in the basement. It always smells kinda weird down there, and I felt like it was always so damp.
Merry Christmas Philly Captain. The last time I was in the Gallery was maybe 2015 when I took the train in, shopped at Modells. There is a developement message board I read Skyscraper Forum. Market East is a dead zone from what I read in the Philly General Development Subforum, they post all of the construction going on in the city. Also they have forums on high rise and skyscrapers. I am for the arena, because that area there is nothing going on down there.
The problem for Chinatown is mostly due to gentrification. The arena is going to bring condo construction in the area and the prices are going to be ridiculous and will raise rents and real estate taxes and chase the current residents. That's the main reason that the neighborhood is against it. The businesses are mostly small businesses without a lot of parking available. The arena will make it even worse and affect their business. Because like you mentioned there is no way 40% of people are going to use Septa. I was thinking it would be better at the roundhouse site and build parking underneath. I think that would be a better option and not affect Chinatown as much
I truly miss The Gallery from the mid-late 80s into the 90s, especially at Christmas! Only visited this new Fashion District mall a few times since Spring 2023. I did find a few nice hoodies at that Nike Outlet super cheap!
I used to love the Musical Christmas Tree at the Gallery. It had a good food court also. The basketball stadium is a joke. It will cause intense congestion when it's in use, the rest of the time it's just more downtown dead space.
The new greyhound stop is on spring garden street right under the underpass that is connected to the train I know because I live in NYC and everytime I go to Philly I get dropped off there lol MERRY XMAS CAP!! Wishing you and your family another great year!!🎁🎄🎅
Great video. That Gallery mall is a real dud in its current form, and you correctly point out that a lot of the stores on Market Street are vacant as well. I agree that the new 76ers arena could help, bringing thousands of people into Center City every night. Anything would be better than what it is: dead mall and homeless encampment. Aren’t they supposed to also build affordable housing on top of the arena? The city really needs that too, and people in apartments would shop in the stores and restaurants I bet. My favorite part of the Gallery Mall is the trek from Jefferson Station to the Marriott Courtyard, up the escalators to where the Convention Center is. If nothing else, it’s a great way to stay indoors for a few blocks when the weather is bad and you’ve got to get uptown. Keep up the good work Philly Captain!
They pulled the affordable housing from the plan as soon as the mayor backed it. Like within two or three days they suddenly said "actually let's cut the affordable housing bit," and the mayor rolled over and thanked them. It also won't be every night, it'll be once or twice a week--thrice at maximum. The Fashion District is normally pretty full during weekend hours where the AMC and Round1 are. The thing is, rather than realizing people are going to the third floor for the experience (seriously it's busy pretty frequently in Round1 and AMC), and the lower level for the food court (I can almost never find seating), there really isn't anything else on that side of the mall. But the mall also closes at 7PM every night which is just stupid. The jobs the arena will be bringing in are for the most part minimum wage nonsense, which isn't going to help anyone in center city, especially since they'll be losing all the jobs from the Fashion District and likely cutting the hours of the workers at the Wells Fargo center. SEPTA will be expected to take on more than half of the transit in order to prevent gridlock in center city, but they aren't getting the funding necessary for it, so they just raised their prices and are looking at limiting service. The Sixers do not care, and will not be paying a dime to help SEPTA. The area will not be taxed, so we will be losing out on money for our schools that desperately need it--since property taxes are a major part of school funding. 60 million dollars over 30 years to multiple projects in center city, like keeping chinatown around (which is ALWAYS busy, try getting a seat at terakawa or luscious dumplings or dim sum garden or yakitori boy during dinner? you'll be waiting for an hour), keeping washington square west around, and the gayborhood, and you've suddenly got pennies helping these people. Chinatown ALONE was requesting 300 million in the face of the way this will negatively impact almost all of the businesses there. The arena is a terrible idea. Mayor Parker is licking the shoes of billionaires and we're calling her out on it because she's not just corrupt--she, and all of city council, are STUPID.
The Gallery had a great run. I was never fond of the new FD. The foot traffic is low, I think, because of online shopping and Covid. I'm not sure if a stadium is the answer, but I knew this would eventually be replaced with something.
One of the biggest f-ups with the gallery renovations before the fashion district was when they took out the direct access to the mall from ARAMARK tower. They literally made it more difficult for the thousands of office workers in the Tower to access the mall from inside
I believe that was done after an incident in 2011 that eventually led to Aramark moving to their current location on 24th from Market to Chestnut and Jefferson now having that tower. That incident I believe also led to the Gallery being re-done into The Fashion District because even though it was profitable, The Gallery was attracting "the wrong kind" and many racist types refused to shop there because of it.
@@WaltGekko That's possible. I was relocated from ARA Tower in 1994, and only visited periodically after that. When I worked there, it was an easy escalator ride down to Cinnabon and the gallery food court area. When they closed that off, it was some labyrinthine journey to get down there. it may or may not have changed people's habits, but it certainly was frustrating and more time -consuming when you were on lunch break and up against the clock.
When you see major stores leave and off brand stores take their place and lots of vacant stores, a clear sign the mall is on the decline. Fashion doesn't fall in that category as of yet...
Outrageous parking prices & ridiculous traffic makes me go to the burbs to other malls. I bit the bullet last year & went once to take my daughter to the Nike outlet & myself to Columbia for work boots. Nothing in either worth buying. No reason to ever go back
The architecture of the Gallery was way ahead of it's time. I miss the 2 ol faithful water fountains, and the overall past layout. Could have just used a major renovation, but not redesign. They lost money on this one, so the Sixers stadium is needed.
I wish they would put the Stadium where the other ones are. I have to go there before it's gone. I was born in Philadelphia but if it keeps on this way. Forget about it.
Investors spent $420 million to turn the Gallery into the Fashion District. I do go the movie theater there every once in awhile. I am always surprised at how dead the mall is despite the stores, theater and Winery. Seems like to me it's missing density. You never see big crowds there no matter what but that seems to be at all malls. Perhaps the mall as we used to know it anywhere is a dead concept. It also needed big spenders. I am talking about those with credit cards, etc. At this point it's worth it to try the arena idea. Not only would there be Sixers but also some concerts there. The Met seems to be doing well despite no parking. The folks in Boston and NYC take the trains to the game. Septa needs to get their act together. Lastly, I don't want to see the team play in Camden. That would be the worse outcome.
I definitely don’t think it’s a dead mall! It gets quite busy during the day! It could be even busier if the got creative with it. Host some cultural events there, like a school orchestra competition or a fashion show with high schoolers or college fashion majors.
They better not dare convert all of that real estate into an arena when they could just use the one we already have on the flip side here in Camden. I hope they reconsider it otherwise going to Philly will become more insufferable.
This isn't a dead mall. It looks like all of the retail spaces are occupied and the theater is running. Capitol City mall in Harrisburg only has 2 stores and the rest of the mall is vacant. In Lebanon PA half of that mall is empty. Malls are definitely on their way out.
It's a dead mall. Was built to try to bring people back into Center City because everyone was shopping at Malls outside of City. Old Gimbels building across the street was torn down ( such a shame) and brand new Gimbels built as an anchor store in Gallery. Using the name The Fashion District is a big joke. If these stores are considered fashion I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. Having a basketball arena in Center City is a bad idea. City needs to clean it up and find solution for homeless which is bringing down City
I can't wait for the new stadium downtown. I used to ride a line to work and the septa guy always said, "downtown, downtown " over and over. I can't say center city since.
The fake Gallery was dead on arrival, in comparison to the original iconic Gallery Mall of the 80’s, 90’s & early-mid 00’s . This new Gallery is trash . All my real Philly jawns know that’s why they shop at KOP!!
Here's the problem the streets are not wide enough on days whereas events are happening which leads to crazy traffic jams. Now you going to add an additional 10-15k people in this same area without addressing volume issues? Jefferson Hospital came out and said during games emergency crews would face mounting delays because of traffic jams. So go ahead and believe the crap they tell us is going to happen but I don't believe the mayor or the Sixers.
We don’t need or want an arena that will be used only a dozen or so times a year. Chinatown should be left alone. It has been under siege since the early 1970s. I’m old enough to recall the ramps controversy. What will really happen if the arena is built is alot of the area will be demolished to build parking garages,no one will take Septa. The arena will totally blight the area.
As long as the games and events take place after weekday business hours there should be no be no problem with parking. There are plenty of parking garages around the area and on nights and weekends should have plenty of open spaces. Even if they charge the high prices the captain quoted it is about the same they pay now to park at the existing arena without the ability to shop or eat before or after events now. Same thing on weekends. While their Ma be more people shopping there still should be plenty of parking spaces available. As for SEPTA being used you have to remember there is only the Broad Street Subway that serves the existing arena. Here you have the commuter rail, market Frankford el, PATCO as well as the possible use of the broad ridge spur line to 8th and market street if septa adds service to operate for sports or events held there. If some of the people already have SEPTA weekly or monthly passes it would be free for them to take SEPTA to events at the new arena. Also many people are less afraid to ride the commuter trains than the subway so it might be used more than some people think.
So their still trying to do this? Given all the deteriorating areas of this part of Philly they could clean up and put a stadium but why move any of it? It’s literally one of the easiest sports complexes to get to and out of and it’s all together in one place.
Another cookie cutter mall with the same stores as everywhere elsw. There, Deptford,Cherry Hill and Kop to name a handful. It may not be totally dead but never performed as expected. Just wasn't needed. If you look at other big cities they are all having vacancies issues. San Fran is doing really bad. And your totally right people go to the game then go home.Maybe a pregame drink.
One of the problems I had with both the Gallery and Fashion mall was its original floor plan. Unlike most malls even though it has three floors it does not flow well. Sometimes you have to go down a level and then cross over to get to a store you want. Also as you mentioned if you drive and park there the cost is too high. I remember when it was first built and the parking authority owned the garage they usually priced it so those first two hours were relatively cheep to encourage shoppers. The all day rate was higher to discourage all day parking.
Sixers will suck forever. Until the NBA goes back to physical paint game, it is groundhog play. I would never go to Downtown Philly for a crowded venue. Grew up here. Go to the Palestra before I hit that sport trap. $$$
i don't know why when i was in high school people said they liked g. love & special sauce but i downloaded whatever mp3s i could somebody had a jack johnson cd this is music for depressed teenage girls like 20-25 years ago

I worked at the Waldenbooks for a while and was always in that Kmart. My manager would send me there to get supplies for our store: hand soap for the bathroom, stationary, and stuff like that.
The Gallery was Popping in the 90s best place to skip school 😂
They ban kids once they get out of school for the day.

Your very knowledgeable on what's going on in the City., lol I didn't know the Gallery changed its name. I haven't been to the Gallery since the 80's.
My earliest Christmas shopping memories is of 69th Street in Upper Darby. The decorations, Santa in a small cabin, the big Sears near the El.
I remember that sears soon as you crossed 63rd and market
Do you guys remember pantry pride super Market a block away from sears?
Merry Christmas Captain! You are one of the ones who inspired me to make my videos. And be more of myself. Thanks to you my videos are getting better! Much love and respect! Go Phillies!
It's NOT A DEAD MALL. Unfortunately this mall reopened during COVID as well as in the shadows of Online Shopping.
It's spooky in there....Make it happen
Sorry, not going to happen :)

Yes, it's big mistake putting it there. Not just about Chinatown. But traffic and Septa.
City planners and officials do not implement projects that will benefit the interest of the community but what will benefit them and their wallets.
Gallery in the 90s was how a mall should be packed as sardines everyday. Was almost impossible to get a seat in the food court and it was huge
I remember getting a lot of Taco Bell at that food court in the basement. It always smells kinda weird down there, and I felt like it was always so damp.
When you were on the ulta beauty level and blatantly walked by the showtime, put me in tears😂😂😂😂😂"vacant". Man you are true and thorough 👍🏿
Merry Christmas, Philly Captain! Love your videos. I’m far away from Philly now (Washington state) but your videos take me back home.
Life always changes in the city
Wow, happy Christmas Eve to you and your family and friends
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and your family it was nice meeting you In person earlier this year at wawa hoagiefest
Round 1 is a cool spot ....we went inside that last year after we were at the sneaker show at the convention center
Merry Christmas Captain to you and your family !
Hey Philly Captain, great mall video of the Fashion District formerly The Gallery-Center City Phila..Merry Christmas from me Bobby B..

I remember merry go round store, footlocker etc & I believe the bar in there was called the news stand of course this was in early 80’s
nice video tour
Enjoy your Christmas
Hope to see you again, esp on NYD with the Mummers
Merry Christmas Captain and family Have a great day
have a happy week capt.
The FD is very boring. I’m glad for the memories of the Gallery 🥰

Closer to Callowhill and Spring Garden, gentrification started a long time ago...back in the 2000s.
Doesn't matter what we think. This BS arena will happen where the Captain is in this video.
I agree
I truly miss The Gallery from the mid-late 80s into the 90s, especially at Christmas! Only visited this new Fashion District mall a few times since Spring 2023. I did find a few nice hoodies at that Nike Outlet super cheap!
We were on a school trip and I once got lost in the gallery with some classmate and made the bus late!!
Merry Christmas everybody!
Been here a bunch of times since the pandemic. I buy most of my clothes here. Though I’ve yet to go upstairs. I stick to the bottom two floors.
I used to love the Musical Christmas Tree at the Gallery. It had a good food court also. The basketball stadium is a joke. It will cause intense congestion when it's in use, the rest of the time it's just more downtown dead space.

Needs better stores and the food court sucks
With the sixers being there in the future the traffic is going to be catastrophic
That issue is part of what all the protests were about.

Remember the bus terminal and gallery mall, walked from Chinatown
Merrray Christmas.
I wonder is there still a 10:00 curfew for teens to be out of center city? Remember those flash robs of the stores they used to do?
merry Christmas Captain...hope you found the Wicked book at Target1
I was there opening day for the gallery 1977. I think it was August 10 20 ft from the door.
To be fair, how many malls are really active now that online shopping is in full effect
I wonder what's going to happen to the City Winery.
The architecture of the Gallery was way ahead of it's time. I miss the 2 ol faithful water fountains, and the overall past layout. Could have just used a major renovation, but not redesign. They lost money on this one, so the Sixers stadium is needed.
The Gallery had a book store it was a B Dalton or Walden?
Walden it was near suncoast
@@Mikeshik Yes so they had two there was another on the other side closer to the train station so that one was BDalton

You know Kensington Eddie? 😃
Usually, I like to go to the Fashion district to purchase some Nike brand hoodies or jersey, like Sixers or Eagles! :)
Yeah Market St is a ghost town now and the Heirloom Giant on 9th is closing down on December 28th
That is crazy because people live on Chestnut in the 1100 block. I guess they are Jeff people.
Someone is going to get voted out of office because they approved this stadium.
And they will get a job with a union that pays more
The city sold out their own people the people of Chinatown are going to lose their neighborhood it sucks I liked the fashion district

Nobody goes there anymore anyway
This area has always sucked. Underdeveloped. Hope the new arena helps.
