Jason's plan to convert the entire yard into a garden is about halfway done - some see what is in the middle of the garden.

The brassicas might really surprise you, plus, those are nice sized plants that will get well established before the days get really short. I am assuming you do not get the severe cold we get here in WI. Some type of a row cover might really help keep them going if it drops in the 20'sF.
Plant it, and they will come, damn cabbage butterflies!
Last winter I had some Brussel sprouts and spinach make it without even trying out in the garden. We did get a lot of snow that insulated everything from the really cold temps.
Nice soil prep! Stay Well my friends!!!

Weed free gardening sounds great, but they could have left you with some soil. Suprising how much money they would make from selling the soil as grass doesn't need many nutrients.

It’s going to be so interesting to see what happens! I’m in Zone 5b and find that more can survive with mulching, deep planting, and /or protection from wind, and/or protection from too much soggy winter wetness, than a hardiness zone indicates. I’m growing bulbs, corms, and tubers for flowers, but most Zone 7 gladiolus come back for me, and dahlias with a good black tarp over them will often do the same. With your brassicas - have you thought about putting a temporary cold frame over a few? Like, putting some cinder blocks down around a couple and laying an old junked window on top? Just cuz you guys are wonderfully nuts? 😁😎

Didn’t take long for that butterfly to find them. Defiantly check your brassicas for eggs and caterpillars. Then get them netted.
I wouldn’t really call anything mulch unless it is at least an inch deep preferably two. Anything less is just a top dressing.
Dry grass mulch will suppress weeds it will also stop your seeds from germinating. Either wait till seeds have germinated then weed as needed and mulch around the young plants. Or I find easier start seeds in pots, then separate the mulch dig a hole in the soil to plant your new plant start.
How cold and for how long is the usual winter where you are.
