    I purchased the Rode recorder mic and cable as you recommended in this video, along with the M6 Mk ii you recommended in a different video - the hiss is savage. I've tried reducing the volume on the camera settings but then it's too quiet. What am I doing wrong and why is the hiss hugely present at all volume settings?

    I realise this comment is very late. I appreciate the evaluation of the various microphones and you make some very valid points which have helped me to decide on which factors to look out for when choosing a "reporters" microphone, but I cannot express how annoying the sound effect you use for your visual prompts on screen is, I find It interrupts your vocal to a quite alarming extent. I respectfully ask you to either loose the sound effect completely, or at least turn it down by 20dB or so.

    Too much denoiser starting at 5:18, if you didn't do it then your 70D is doing some weird and horrible things with the noise. It makes it sound like 64kbps mp3. Nice video regardless, thanks for putting in the time and effor to put this together.

  • @SMGJohn

    Røde mic has like -56 gain which everyone fails to mention, this can be a severe deal breaker for most people because they do not have equipment enough to boost that

    • @SMGJohn
      @SMGJohn 2 года назад

      @Savannah Finnessey
      It means the Røde mic is pretty awfully unsensitive and needs to be boosted heavily to obtain normal level. Preferably -7 or -3 audio levels.

    • @SMGJohn
      @SMGJohn 2 года назад

      @Savannah Finnessey
      What are you connecting it to? The mic needs phantom power and the boost means for example any device with XLR input that has a dial allowing you to make the microphone "louder" if you will.
      If you do not make the mic "louder" in the XLR device, you get a very quiet sound, but if you boost it in post (in software) you get a lot of noise in the background.

    • @SMGJohn
      @SMGJohn 2 года назад

      @Savannah Finnessey
      Its not gonna do the job, you need XLR input with ability to boost the mic.

    I most often use the Zoom h1. Allthough you have to get the Wind cover for it (included in the accessories kit) otherwise you might experience swosh noises if the interviewer moves the recorder too rapidly..
    I am considering upgrading the setup further with a Røde Reporter or similar and then using a xlr to 3.5 mm adapter cable to connect it to the H1

    I have all three mikes you have suggested but have never used the Zoom Mike in the field. It seemed too small too cheap and just not good enough should quality. The Sein... however you spell it was our main mike for years until the Reporter came along and it is just the best fit for us when fitted with a good cable of course and phantom power. I have a question for you all. Why are you pissing around with DSLRs and Zoom recorders. Wouldn't it be much better and cheaper to just get a proper high end professional Video or Cinema Camera? Try JVC for one If it is good enough for the BBC it should be good enough for you. Panasonic and even Sony do a reasonable job with sound and there is not the issues that you will have with Zoom recorders batteries, switches and set ups. So tell me how I am wrong or am I missing something here.

    Hello and greetings from Ireland. Have just done a sound quality test on four of my microphones... The Rode reporter, the Ixm yellowtec recording microphone, the Shure SM58 and the Rode Procaster. I would rate the Ixm and the procaster as joint number 1. Not far behind the Shure Sm 58 and last the Rode reporter. The Ixm yellowtec is pretty expensive at 750 euro but so easy to use.. Just a mic, no cables or recorders. The procaster is definitely not a handheld but what sound quality. However eventhough cheapest of them all at 110 euro the Shure SM58 is definitely the old dog for the hard road... Beautiful sound fromm a simple old mic. The Rode Reporter I found was very treble.
    Stay safe
    John

    What would you recommend for a video camera that is 100-200 dollars that will allow someone to make reasonable b-roll footage doing product reviews that has an external mic for using a shotgun mic for secent audio. DSLR is out of the budget just starting out. I often see budget vlogging cameras reviewed but never do they say if they have an external mic nor do they say if it would be good for something like tech reviews and/or fairly decent B-roll footage, it being able to live stream as a webcam would also be a great feature.

      i just used a Sony IDC - UX533 in my pocket set at medium level to record my now deceased brother in law from 10 feet away. No one was aware of this but, i thought it would be liked sometime in the future. i've used it at a podium stuck there with gaffers tape and it did a wonderful job of picking up the speaker person. I also have a Roland R-05 for doing he same. both are great recorders. I presume the one he's using is also good.

    I've been waiting for the Rode Reporter and transmitter duo. Meanwhile, I've used a Sony and Canon small mic the size of a Chapstick, with electrical tape around it and a $25 Karaoke microphone from Target to make it look like a professional reporter's mic. The Sony and Canon mics, which are nearly identical, are amazing, but I do want to step up to either the Sennheiser or Rode Reporter mic. I'm hoping the Rode Reporter mic and its transmitter just out will work with my Rode FilmMaker Kit to save having to buy a complete set of the transmitter and receiver pair to make the mic wireless. You would do well to comment on this. I've been happy thus far with other Rode mics that I've bought that include the NTG2 shotgun, and their PIN MIC that camouflages the mic on most all clothing and makes any videographer appear to be a real professional.

    Id really like a mic 🎤 that is wireless & handheld that is cheap. Like $50 or less no more than $100. Mainly for the interviews when I go in public it will look better than those who use their iPhones 📲. Also I thought about just using my boom mic 🎙 some of my cameras 🎥 came with them haven’t really done a lot of outside recording mostly in door in front of my green screen.

    Do you have any suggestion for classical music videos ? especially for microphones ? I have a zoom q3hd but the sound quality , especially for the violin , is not very good .

    So do you have to record audio seperately and then put it on the video using editing software?

    thanks a lot, very good suggestions. im going with the rode reporter with the DSLR cable and foam wind-breaker ball bundle on amazon thanks to your suggestion. eventually i will look into a wireless mic for the more hectic situations.

    Can't find the Sescom cable for sale anywhere atm, do you know of any alternate brands or what I should be looking for? I want to go for a wired option

    Does anyone know if I can use the RODE reporter with my iPhone XR? I am just starting and don't want to drop a bunch of money!

    We use a RØDE lavelier mic under the shirt for our vids... But as you said in the video.. the editing gets a lil more tricky! Awesome video as always Sean! For voiceover we use a Snowball Ice ;)

    Hello Sean-Diddy, informative even years later. Over the past 4 years there have been half-a-dozen XLR transmitters (Rode, Senn, Deity, etc...) I'm sure we'd love to hear your take on the sound quality and/or features (like the Deity record to card & transmit at the same time). I'm sure you're at no loss for content to create but please add that one to the list for 2022. ;) Thx for all the amazing content!
