    Don't use the sponge, I heard that the sponge will annoy your fish. One of the worst was this Sponge that lived in a pineapple under the sea.

    I love mechanical filtration more cuz I have goldfish and they create alot of poop. I call them the pooperino's.
    Thanks Jill for yet another nice video. They're very relaxing to watch.

    I’ve run both, and it depends on the bio load of your tank and how ‘clean’ you want the substrate…
    I’ve run HOB on most of my tanks to the point I just considered them normal tank equipment, I like the AquaClear line for its customizability, I use them for mechanical and biological filtration, the downside is the current they create can be detrimental to fish/invertebrates that prefer calmer water
    I’ve recently switched my 20 Long cherry shrimp tank to a sponge filter to protect the shrimplets (the shrimp haven’t bred yet, but I want to be ready when it happens) and immediately I noticed the shrimp became more active and explore the tank more as they didn’t have to fight the current from the HOB
    Right now, I have two active tanks, a 28 Bowfront stuffed with guppy grass and one extremely happy female betta, and the 20 Long shrimp tank mentioned earlier
    At some point I’m going to upgrade one of them to a 40 Breeder with a corner matten filter I got for free on marketplace, I’m leaning towards the 40 breeder, for some reason, the thought of a 40 breeder with a thriving colony of cherry shrimp just makes me smile…

    It depends how many tanks you have. One...get a HOB. More than one, go with sponge filters.
    Also, make sure it's Aquarium Co-op brand. 👍 Much better than the rest.

      That was the same for me too :)! I had all HOBs or internal HO filters and I actually liked them a lot. I think it was when I got the AquaClear 110 that I realized how loud they were and did the switch 😄 I dont mind small HOBs though.
      Thank you Donnie for the support! Looking forward to seeing you around 🙂

    I prefer sponge filters. I use sponges filters in my community take and in my breeding tanks. I a hang on back filter for my cichlids and a sponge filter in case hang on back filter fails. I was having the some problem in my community tank. My Cory cats and guppy’s kept dying then everything got better all of the sudden.

    How do you cycle a tank with a sponge filter? Does it also need 3-4 weeks before the denitrification works?

    • @JillsFishRoom
      @JillsFishRoom  3 года назад +1

      Hiii Kwiks 😄 You can cycle a tank with a sponge filter the same as you would with a HOB. But thinking about it now, it would probably be faster to do it with a sponge filter since they do promote the nitrification process 🤔 Idk thoooo.

    • @donniebrazis
      @donniebrazis 3 года назад +2

      Just drop in the sponge, if it’s coming from an established tank that’s cycled. Use something like Seachem Prime, Stability, and Pristine to keep it going. That’s a good starter

      @@mkat8505 It might look funny but that's why I have random sponges just sitting around in my Betta tanks :) in case I want to start a new cycle on the fly. It only took me a week to cycle a new tank with an old sponge filter! Love em 😍😍

    Sponge filter all the way.
    I have lots of RCS shrimp and they are ideal
    I used to have a hang on filter on my (now deceased, rip Lancelot) betta fish's tank because it wouldn't disturb the water surface as much

      That was my dilemma as well, CJ 🙁 I was always so stressed out to find when mine stuffed up after a power outage, because of the darn fragile motors. And since I had a planted tank, the leaf debris would clog it fast. 😵

    Sponge filters all the way in smaller tanks, although you can get some really big sponge filters that will work on larger tanks, beyond smaller tanks external filters work well with the different filtering media (sponges, ceramic medai). I ised sponge filters in all my smaller tanks as the young fish also feed off them l. Great content btw, how'd the betta breeding coming along?

    • @JillsFishRoom
      @JillsFishRoom  3 года назад +1

      I'm testing out a few large sponge filters in my big boy tank so I'll have to report back to you on that 😄 But I can already say that sponges are better for keeping small tanks looking clear than bigger ones 😭
      And I've been waiting for the perfect moment to induce their spawning! I can see my female's egg spot, but she doesnt have breeding stripes yet so I'm trying to be patient.
      She squeezes between the moss divider and the glass so she can see her boyfriend, which is cute but I'm afraid I'm she's having too much visual exposure to him? I guess that can make her not produce eggs? Idk 😭 I'll def be uploading a vid soon about that endeavour.

    Love your videos👍 looking forward to big tank update. If you haven't introduced anything new to your, I'm not sure what your country does to your city water but I know in the u.s. spring and fall they pump more chlorine in the water and suddenly fish start dying , that's my first guess🤷

    • @JillsFishRoom
      @JillsFishRoom  3 года назад +1

      ..... 😨 YOU..... could be onto something. I have to investigate that stat. And no new fish in months.
      It's really sucky because the sickness is seemingly only affecting my Gold Laser corydoras. I've have two of the smallest ones die, so I'm assuming it's only getting my weakest?
      Legit, its so weird. They still eat, they don't have any sores or ich, they just get paler and paler and die after like 4 days. I'm being SUPER careful to not cross contaminate tanks.
      But the real sucky thing is whatever it is, in Australia it's really hard to import antibiotics so all I've been able to find is general cure 🙁🙁🙁 kms.

      @@JillsFishRoom a master breeder of Cory catfish said that some Cory cats when spooked release toxins into the water as a self-defense. happens more when you get them from the store, chasing them around relentlessly when bagging them up. Some Corey release more of this toxin then others. Probably not your problem but something to consider. Thinking more about it if it's your water probably all your fish would be struggling. The toxins that Cory cats release would probably kill all the little baby Corey's first unless they have different sensitivities to it from species to species. But most fish with pale color and the rest okay in my experience has always been something internal🤷 I know Cory lasers are expensive and I really hope you figure it out and not lose any more🙏
