"Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" and the old "Peanuts" cartoons were my very first exposures to jazz music. I must have been four or five, and I just fell in love with it. Indeed, I owe my love of the genre to two of the absolute best: Johnny Costa and Vince Guaraldi. :)
I'm over 60 and he's definitely Mr Rogers to me. I was 8 when the show began so I'm an original 1st generation neighbor! Mr Costa's playing kept me going on piano and guitar because of being teased. No one teases me today when I play.
Johnny was one of the finest musicians I ever worked with. He knew how to make me sound and feel good. He also was a wonderful 'tease'!!! Rehearsals may have been about 'business' but he and several of our peers were 'closet comedians!!!!' I wish I could have video-taped the 'entire' sessions and published them now. They were more adult than for children--funny nevertheless!!!!RIP Johnny!!! Officer Francois S. Clemmons!!!!
I used to wonder at the beautiful technique and sound and thought this has to be good for young kids to hear and enjoy. I know our daughter did, and she was only 4 . She later took up the piano herself and plays pretty well.. thanks to Johnny, largely..
My mother and I used to sing this together before she put me to bed at night. To this day, I sing it to myself on nights I can't fall asleep. Now, I'm studying to become a teacher's assistant and I hope I make a difference in a child's life the way Mister Rogers touched so many young lives
I"m 50! I too, no matter how old I get it will always like Mr. Rogers. I.play his music for my students in the morning as they enter the classroom. It affects the climate and sets the tone for the day. I hear my students singing it to themselves. It is so soothing.
Mr. Costa was pure genius. Due to my schedule and three children, I was able to watch hundreds of shows and baring reruns Mr. Costa never played the themes the same way twice.
@Christopher Crepon That's because this is the solo version. 1:03 On the show, he was playing it with his trio. Therefore, the music wasn't being played with a piano.
More than "Unforgettable"-- irreplaceable. I was very fortunate to hear his stylings; often my favorite part of Mr. Rogers' wonderful show. Kids need people like him in whatever their area of interest is--math, science, sports. They show kids what heights can be achieved.
This song will get into my head tommorow and i will screaming to the good neighbours saying how sad Mr Rogers he's dead and why the world is different without him
Mr. Rogers was one of the kindest, gentlest people on TV. He and Bob Ross were such good people and great roll models. Thanks for sharing this. Did you know all the music was played/sung and recorded live for each episode?
@@QToon92801 In case you never followed up, Bob Ross was a public television painter who hosted a show called 'The Joy of Painting' where he would paint a picture for the audience. He was known for being a very calm, quiet and polite man with a beard and large afro haircut. Despite the fact he was actually pretty cutthroat behind the scenes of the show (he stole the concept from his teacher, painted a much higher detail picture for the show and copied it off screen and wanted to push his brand as far as he could), he is known for being a compassionate and calm individual on screen that audiences connected with.
Actually a lot of that does sound like Tatum, Costa's style perhaps was a little more bravado and less succint than Tatum but that in no way undermines Costa it just means that that was the way he did it and I love it man. It just goes to show if there are two people out there doing similar stuff then Tatum wasn't a lonely man. Very strange how they should both have met. I think Tatum himself described Costa as 'The white Tatum'. Yeh!! ...
What I love is that calling someone "the white Tatum" is such an absurd thing to say. You hear Tatum play and it seems ridiculous to think there could be another of him, whether white, Egyptian, 19th-century woman, or breakdancing vegan kidney donor. If it hadn't been Tatum who said it, he could never have gotten away with it.
So, so little attention is given Johnny Costa and his importance to the Neighborhood and Fred Rogers. It's Fundamental understanding to those that get the connection. It's actually in plain sight. Fred would not have been the Fred we know without Johnny Costa. We look up to Fred and rightly so, but who did Fred look up to? Johnny Costa. Explore this as you like.
My hubby plays like that and can't read a note to save his life. He tells people he's an "Idiot savant, just leave off the savant part." Oh yeah, he's hilarious too.
Picolas Cage , I’m supposing you could get a transcription made, but it would be difficult to create and near-impossible to capture the subtleties. Ask a brilliant pianist 😉
Fred allowed Johnny to play in his own style. That was the selling point to him staying on a children's show. These days, such creativity is extremely limited by tv productions and instead would have been entirely dictated to what could be allowed and what cannot.
To Chris (the uploader), this was released in 1986, according to The Neighborhood Archive website. "Let's Think of Something To Do While We're Waiting" was introduced in Episode # 1501 from 1982.
+Jon Whittaker I meant 'Massive milk bottle chord players'. I called them milk bottle chords after hearing Fats Waller play my very good friend the milkman and Tatum playing chords that sounded seemingly impossible. But, I suppose that they're really just my jocular way of describing any right hand octave being crashed upon with a slap except stretching an extra note which thankfully I can do. Hope that's helpful. Doosh...
Didn't they call him "Magic Fingers" or was that an album he had? I can't remember. Love him. He looks like my great uncle Zygmunt, from Natrona Heights, PA.

Why is the CD version of this a slightly higher pitch? I'm genuinely puzzled when I find these differences because it's not even a half step difference.
There are transcriptions of it on the net. There's also software that automatically notes mp3 files and notates it into music. What a time to be alive. It doesn't also seem that hard to notate his improvisational work seeing as its fixed and not live (obviously)

I always felt the same way too. Anytime I hear cool jazz or bebop that’s all I can think of is Mister Rogers :)
Also Jim Lang for fans of _Hey Arnold_ too.

He was a great musician, I'll bet there are millions and millions of people who first heard jazz with his trio on Mr. Roger's Neighborhood.
Yes!!! Probably my first exposure to jazz! It was love at first listen!
Well, don't forget; there's also the Vince Guaraldi Trio who started doing music for The Peanuts 3 years before Mr. Rogers came out.

Sorry to pop your bubble, but there never once was a "Mr. Roger" on this show.
I am one.
It wasn’t till I got a tad older that I realized this was some of the world’s best piano playing, if not an example of the best itself.
Listening to this music makes me teary eyed because it reminds me of a better time in the life me and my children.
I talked to the son of the bass player for the show, and he had told me that his dad still plays bass and is in his mid 80's.
The bassist is Carl McVicker, Jr.
