Wonderful Review! It was honest, transparent, in-depth, calm and 'sober', and had a nice variety of playing examples. Thank you so much, I'm now almost more in love with your video than with the guitar :D
The $900 Squier Bass VI's are from 2012 to 2017 when they used rosewood fretboards and now everyone wants them. I was lucky enough to get one used for $350 in 2016. People are selling the new 2018 - 2022 ones on the used market for $600-$1000 having no idea why the older ones went up in value 😂 I still play mine to this day and I never thought it would be worth more than I paid for it, lol. Great instrument though. I wanted to try the HB but it was out of stock.
Man that's absolutely wild but it makes a lot of sense. There are quite a few guitars that if they were still rosewood instead of PF I'd have a bit of interest in from Fender, just looks wrong without the RW 🤣
I think a huge reason is the band Loathe blew up when they released their album “I Let it in and it Took Everything” in 2020 (it’s a masterpiece btw). They use an extremely downtuned EAEADF# tuning on the guitars on most of the songs, famously using a Squier Jazzmaster Baritone, which is discontinued. Of course, because their album became huge, a lot of players had to have a baritone guitar (just like how much I want one now lol), which skyrocketed the price of that particular guitar and other similar ones. They may not be the only reason, but from what I’ve seen on people’s opinion of it, they are a huge one.
@@trolologuy02 That band might be a reason they got more popular. Before 2020 it seemed like no one wanted or cared for the bass 6 except for me 😂 I used it for playing chords in my band while the guitar player was doing solos but it became totally part of our sound. The bass 6 was not popular at all during 2012-2017 and the fact they used rosewood in those years when no one wanted them combined with Loathe making them more popular surely has had an affect on the market.
Great video man! Great playing, hitting multiple genres and showing clean as well as dirt. Super appreciated the review on this as I’ve been wanting a bari. Ill check out more content for sure after seeing this one, great stuff
Quite possible yea, I assume the success of their MR Baritone definitely gave them the push to go through with something more recognizable with the scale length
Thanks for another comprehensive, clear and direct review. This guitar will most likely be my next pickup, although I feel my collection of Harley Bentons' is starting to get a bit too heavy. Oh I'd buy other guitars on the market (and one day I'll buy that Rickenbacker 4003 Bass, although when I first tried one years ago, I found it to be the most uncomfortable playing experience I've ever had on a Bass. Or a guitar. It was just wrong! But I still think I want one. When I sell my hip for science, I'll get it.) I got a Harley Benton HB JA-60SB recently, so I'm assuming this Baritone is in keeping with that design. And if it is, it'll be ANOTHER guitar they've made that stays in its case. Because if I take that thing out, it will absolutely be the only guitar I use for recording. It is absolutely one of the best sounding guitars I've ever had, and so damn easy to play. It's punchy and direct, but when you wash it in effects or re-EQ it, it "floats", and I cannot describe that any better than that. It has clarity, but becomes another thing when you fiddle around. A great guitar, whose bridge pickup got marked up by a plectrum I was using on the first day of ownership. But it was £140, so I knew what I was getting. Now I had a blue stained Harley Benton HB JA-60SB bridge pickup. But when I played it through an effects processor, jeeeeeeeez. I loved everything that came out of it. It blended with FX comfortably. You can hear it, clear as day, but whatever you put over it, just kind of melds with it. Doesn't drown it. I would use it on every recording. I purposefully keep it in its case so I use other guitars I own. I don't usually advertise my own work on other channels, and I genuinely just mean the link for you, of a cover I'm doing of "Parasite" by KISS. Which is in my uploads, or just search for the KISS playlist, or the Dr.Tomoculus playlist on my channel. The guitar used for that cover was the Harley Benton HB JA-60SB. I haven't even changed the strings on it yet from the factory. I see what is on my Christmas list. Thanks for your review and opinion. It definitely helps with me making a choice, and I hope others.
Whats that chord you hit after the E Major in the clean tone? What would be the tabbed diagram for it? An E Major would be 022100 if my explanation didnt make sense. Thanks!
this thing sounds nuts on that high gain. i can hear the kind of riffing i'd be doing with it already! definitely going to keep my eyes on it for my next big purchase. i was thinking of saving for one of those squier baritone JMs but this is winning me over quick - seems like a great modding platform as well, put a les trem II on there or something and you've opened a whole new world. great review!
Considering how fast these sold out, I can't help but feel like Squier left a lot of money on the table. That could've been their sales if they were paying attention.
Forgive me for sounding a little critical but I would have thought you would be better off playing a baritone guitar through a full range amp, surely guitar amps struggle with the lower notes?
I don't think it's critical at all, when I had ordered this amp my plan was to use the MusicMan 212HD amp to do record it through - but it was damaged beyond repair in the hurricane. So in a pinch I used the plug in, but I will be making more videos with this guitar using the Victory V40 deluxe which also has a LOT of headroom and I'm curious as well to see how it does with the low frequencies as well through that.
I can’t say that i have any definitive answer but I’m planning to buy a baritone guitar soon. I’m an ambient player so I’ve come to the view that mine should have humbuckers rather than single coils because I think they will resonate more agreeably but I’d ideally like one with a whammy too. To be honest I’ve yet to find an affordable one that has both but the Eastcoast T1 @£200 from Andertons (UK) seems to be my best option. When I started looking I compared the frequency range of baritone guitars with that of my amps and concluded that my PA would be far better suited. I don’t use computers so I have absolutely no knowledge of that side of things and I should also mention that my amps are 1980s Peaveys and one Fender, maybe yours go lower; none of mine can process a thing under 80Hz or so and (I’d probably have to refer to the frequency charts to be accurate) I’m pretty sure baritones produces frequencies below that. By the way, I plan to tune down to A, rather than B, I quite like the notion of that extra full tone.
Please don't forget to mention what you are playing the guitar through, even if it is a modeler for example tell us the amp model and IR you are using , I find that is very useful information. Thank you.
