  • THUD! Billed as the "most important game in Villa's recent history" by the man who who would be sent off, the hosts opened the door to their fellow Champions League chasers. John McGinn's expulsion not only ended any realistic chance to get something from the game, but the subsequent 3 match ban has also put his team in a tough spot with big games on the horizon. A glum Pete the Canadian Villa fanatic shares his views and insights from a gloomy day in B6. Also, Pete is busting over a special announcement!

    Aston Villa have been the bane of my existence all season. I wouldn't usually be on Aston Villa content but the algorithm threw this video up. We're two teams that have played really exciting fun to watch football this season. We shared our available six points. The race for 4th is on, may the best team win 😏

    Great analysis as usual Pete. I think I was the only one in my Aston Villa fanatical family that predicted we would lose this game (I predicted 0 - 3) I just had a feeling that it wasn't gonna be our day. However, I pointed out that we are still 2 points above Spurs, we didn't lose a position in the league (yes we could have strengthened it with a win) and there's no guarantee that Spurs will win their next game just because they beat us. The REAL KICK in the goolies was the loss of McGinn for three games, as you pointed out. That's what annoyed me more than the result. Anyway, onwards and upwards UTMV!!!!

    Like my fellow Spurs fan below I'm very impressed with this show, the host is eloquent with punchy delivery and good insights into the game. I wish some of the Spurs fan shows were a tenth as slick and professional as this content. Before the game I was hopeful but not fully confident of taking something from the game after Villa mugged us at The Lane. While we played really well it could have been very different if Emery had not been so conservative tactically, maybe he went safety first due to Villa's Euro away day (and they did look tired especially Watkins). Love John McGinn but his indiscipline broke Villa and for the first time in a dog's age I was able to relax while watching a game end without my heart in my mouth. Anyway good luck to Villa in your Euro campaign, not so much in the league.

    Spurs fan here. I think your analysis is really accurate. One thing I noticed and might be corrected is, Micky van de Van is not that good with aerials. It might be surprising to know considering he’s one the finest centerbacks in the EPL. This is shown in the draw we had in Goodison Park. The opponent attacked with set pieces and we conceded the final drawing goal. The only centerback that we have that’s actually supposed to be good with aerials is Dragusin, along with Romero, who is a master in aerial duels.

    I do not care whatever was going through Mcginns head....you DO NOT go into a tackle with the express idea of taking a player out with that much force, that could have possibly broken his leg, and knowing full well you are getting banned for 3 games. teams have figured out how to beat us tactically, an aggressive and suffocating press, then attack down the wings. the big teams have the ability to implement this plan to effect shown by results vs man u, newcastle, chelsea, ajax and now spurs. emery needs to come up with a new plan to counter this because villa are exposed right now and it's the worst time for it to be happening.

    • @leftmono1016

      Even Luton caused us problems with the high press.
      Inviting the press is fine if you’re able to play through it, but we struggle.

    • @thesubliminalhorizon
      @thesubliminalhorizon 2 месяца назад

      I think more so than us being "figured out" is we just aren't executing playing through the press like we were in the first half of the season because of players we've lost and fatigue. First half seemed okay, we just really knocked the piss out of ourselves when the fist goal went in. Matty has never looked great playing a pseudo-winger, but also I wonder if the threats of revenge the spurs fans were laying on him on social media impacted his mentality. Hopefully not, but I do wonder about that. Anywho, UTV!

    • @theostanway1628
      @theostanway1628 3 месяца назад +2

      I am sure that was a contributing factor in the red card as Mcginn was out of desperation finding anything to work to give us a chance to get back into the game the tackle mainly came out of frustration and annoyance that his teammates weren't putting it in as much as him mainly due to legginess from playing more than Mcginn against Ajax. So I think Mcginn committed to smash the ball into the stands and send Udogie down like a sack of potatoes even though there wasn't a dangerous attack to stop and we had the numbers to win the ball back. Unfortunately the red midst descended he had too much anger and pride in the moment to pull out when he realised he wasn't getting the ball and the same intent as what Tarkowski had when he went into Moreno didn't work in Mcginns favour, because Goodison was just as quiet as villa park was on minute 64 when that happened to raise the volume in Goodison and give the fans some false sense of injustice because "he got the ball ref"

    • @theostanway1628
      @theostanway1628 3 месяца назад

      Also Tarkowskis intent was actually much worse than Mcginns as he could have broken Morenos leg easily going in like that whilst the maximum danger to an opponents safety and well being Mcginns challenge could've caused was a rolled ankle and a maximum 3 week long time on the sidelines so we shouldn't have any nonsense about Mcginn being a thug or that type of player

    I think we’re falling into the trap of believing CL is this magic wand that fixes our financial problems and gets us firing to the next level. Leicester were in it and competed regularly for it and look at how that’s panned out for them. We’ve got to be more sustainably run. We buy low and sell high. I think it’s time for us to cash in on a few now and reset our goals for next season accordingly. I never want to go through 2011 - 2015 ever again. That’s more important than CL for me. We gotta go all out for the conference league too because ..come on! It’s a trophy!

    Great analysis as usual, Pete. I hope I’m wrong but this felt like a sliding doors moment to me. Our chance of catching up with the ‘Big 6’ falling away before our eyes. An unmitigated disaster. I’m not too fussed about the Europa Conference, but we must go out to win on Thursday. Lose against Ajax and I think the players heads will go down good and proper. As others have said, I thought the atmosphere was very poor on Sunday bar the appreciation for Chris Nicholl before kick off. HEITS. A few songs that seemed to fizzle out and then the mass walkout before full time. I have been a Villa fan for 46 years and have never walked out on the team. I took a Palace supporting mate of mine on Sunday and he said he had never seen a stadium empty so much before the final whistle. He also had a few comments about the efficiency of the catering staff in the Upper Trinity. Embarrassing all round, I’m afraid. Best part of the day was the pie……when we eventually got it! UTV VTID

    Great show Pete, I really think that the formation had a huge bearing on the outcome on this game I know you think otherwise and to be fair you have excellent stats to back your theory up but stats don't show weather or not a players mentality is positive or negative and I think that's exactly what we began this game with and that was a negative mentality through the whole team I think its one of the worst performances I've seen since Unai took over and I hate to say this but at the moment we're a team that cannot handle the pressure of playing big games and we certainly didn't back ourselves to beat Tottenham no way did any player cross that white line with any confidence of winning that game after 20 minutes I really could only see one winner and it wasn't us I honestly didn't see a 0 - 4 goal trashing but what I am saying is if you approach a game in a negative manner than don't be surprised if its a negative outcome we were the home team we should have said let's go for it we have nothing to loose and if we went and attacked them.the way spurs have being conceding goals had we got the first goal and got villa Park rocking it might have been a totally different game I honestly thought it would have been a 2- 2 game or maybe a 3-2 but when I saw the team news I said we're in trouble here it was so negative it would even had drained the battery's on a Telsa after one lap around villa Park. You get back what you give out in this life and we certainly got what we deserved which was a slap in the face.. love the show. UTV

    The things that stood out for me
    1)The decision making was terrible, both choice of passes and runs, especially going forward.
    2) Taking too long on the ball, and nobody seemed able to take a decent first touch, we never seemed capable of controlling the ball.
    3).Our defending for the 1st and especially the 3rd and 4th goals was very poor, and 2nd was the footballing equivalence of committing suicide.

    The weather, the flat performance, the atmosphere inside VP, the defensive defeatist team selection and set up all pointed to and produced a really bad day in the office. Home PL losses to Newcastle, Man Utd, and now Spurs really have sucked. We would have 9 extra points IF we had won those games. But we are still in 4th place in the PL and have an opportunity on Thursday to make the QF in the Europa Conference League. We will also be playing another tired and leggy team next Sunday in London. Missed Kamara & Ramsey in this game. Sell Cash at the end of the season. Need a better right back. Finishing 4th or 5th in the circumstances and with all the injury woes would still be amazing. This is where Unai has to find a way to, when we’re are not 100% his plan is to near the knuckle and the better teams have our number. When you look at successful seasons for any team they have a small group of players that play every game then the next who play 80% then 60% down to the 40% and below. You cannot lose those ever presents for long and do as well, since Xmas that has been the story.

    It looks like much of those loses are for investments that we can write off. Some estimates of the routky 180 million in loses over the last 3 seasons are that after write-offs the figure is closer to 80 or 90 million. We'll be fine. And those sustainability rules may wrll be gone soon. The majority of clubs are well aware of how unhelpful those rules are to their plans for growth!

    A tough loss indeed Pete, and I agree the tactics were not to blame. The opening goals came from individual mistakes and not caused by the tactics. Those goals completely changed the game including revving up John McGinn to a frenzy and to his badly timed tackle and the sending off. So sad for our brave and wonderful captain, he was showing tremendous leadership, playing like two men in an attempt to galvanize our flagging team, he just got unlucky with that tackle (hope we appeal the decision). So the loss was disappointing but it is only one game, the important thing now is how we react. Unai Emery has seen it all, in Unai we trust. Very pleased to hear you are coming to B6 soon. Thank you Pete. UTMV!

    Kick in the balls as it is, let's not get too downbeat. I wrote us off first day of the season with Mings ACL and getting thumped by Newcastle. I'd have taken 5th or 6th place start of the season. Thing is now, like most of us probably, I'll be gutted not to get into the top 4 when we have been bloody brilliant this season. Especially beating City and Arsenal. If spurs nick 4th then t least I can say they are a decent team and probably deserve it too. If Utd finish above us tho that's another story. They have been poor this season and I think I'd find that hard to stomach. I also think we could do with Europe now this year. Need this game against ajax like a hole in the head. We need top 4 for the money it'll bring in. FFP is gonna cripple us otherwise. However if we lose another home game in succession, I fear it really is a load of nails in the coffin. Squad is getting down to bare bones, players that are fit aren't exactly playing well and we need a few good results quickly. Calls for some optimism. UTV

    It shows that McGinn is weak mentally, and he's not supposed to the captain of the team and even though they were already down by two goals to zero, he let them down big time and he is also going to miss some games

    Cash is pour offers nothing apart from passing the ball back and putting his hand up to apologise because he can’t pass forward. We looked well off it, The whole team was 20% off it and if you do that in the Premier League you’re in trouble. Watkins needs to be more aggressive he is starting to get bullied off the ball far too much. Bailey is no centre forward he was completely off the pace, I think that was a mistake by Emery but we have to learn from it. Tim has to play in place of McGinn in the 20 minutes he was on he had a 96% pass rate, he can pass with both feet, carry the ball, strong and quick. Tielemans cannot do that job no way. The fans HAVE to get behind the team we were far to quiet, we can’t just be loud when we are winning we need to get behind them when they need us.

    Konsa shouldn’t be starting. I know, so many Villa fans love him but IMO he’s overrated and a liability in the back. It’s no coincidence that he comes back into the lineup and we leak goals like crazy. The first two goals were directly a result of Konsa’s mistakes. Players that concern themselves with lifting an arm up looking for the offside call get caught like Konsa did both times. We look better without him in the center, I’m sorry.

    But 2 reliable sources from Spurs sphere consistently told its deluded followers to look at Aston Villa, Brighton, Newcastle, and at one point, if we want to get somewhere take a sip from Luton Town. Oh, I forgot in my speil to drop names. 😅😅 RUclipsrs Stel, what a horse fly swatter, from Tottenham Away and the Savva from Heritage TV can not see a good on Daniel Levy even though it said differently with Spurs being s better club over the past 20 years than all the aforementioned clubs in same period.
    In those same years, only one club outside the "top 6", you remember Leicester City has done more to compete at the highest level. Yet,we are told to fashion everything after other clubs that are struggling to remain the top 8.
    The daily trope dont line up the facts. So they blame the fans who just want to enjoy the football, moan when we lose instead of indicting the club and move on to next week.

    I've watched that McGinn tackle about thirty times and I just cannot see the red card. It was stupid and reckless ("gave the ref a decision to make", as they say) but he wasn't out of control of his body, he wasn't high, he didn't have his studs raised, it wasn't a cruncher or a scissor - the player wasn't hurt, which shouldn't be a relevant factor, but what is relevant is that the player *wasn't at any risk* of being hurt. Cynical, sure, but I don't see how by any metric it was a red because it wasn't blatant cheating to (e.g.) deny a goalscoring opportunity and it wasn't something that put Udogie in meaningful danger of an injury. It's about as textbook as yellows come - in the moment I thought "bit harsh but ref's call", but the more I watch it the more I'm coming to think it was actually a really big mistake from the ref.

    Set up to lose I’m afraid. Played for a draw at home, just crazy. Nothing wrong with a 4-4-2 if it suits a team, ( which it does us ). Unai ‘overthought’ this game and gave the initiative to Spurs. Let’s hope he learns from it.
