I've always loved Bigelow's style. I also found it so funny how people reacted to The Hurt Locker's "lack of realism." They used real weapons, actually filmed in the Middle East in spite of huge international tension. Jeremy Renner wearing actual, 50lb bomb armor in triple digit temperatures and using actual military-grade smoke bombs and equipment, and everyone's reaction to it- "sooo fake" lol. I guess some audiences don't know the difference between realistic and real.
Austin's Obsession Productions the issue was the portrayal of military protocols. EOD, the unit that the main characters are portraying, are doing things they aren't supposed to do, like chasing insurgents through alleyways but that could be chalked up to Renner's renegade character which is the second issue. his character is portrayed as being in the war to get his adrenaline fix when many soldiers come back, not for the war itself, but for the brotherhood and the relative simplicity of morality there compared to being at home with a thousand different trite issues of civilian life.
if you looked a bit closer, you'll find the general audience gave it universal acclaim while many of its critics are from the military. are you gonna argue with the people who have been there and tell them what it's supposed to be like?
also, I'm pretty sure the US military doesn't issue archery sets and winged jet packs... oops. wrong movie.
Lol, that last bit there was funny. No, I totally agree with you, and I get that. I'm just pointing out that the same could be said for any movie, of any genre. William Goldman, a screenwriter, wrote a book where he talks about the difference between 'real' and 'realistic.' He wrote "A Bridge Too Far" and said the main criticism of the film was that it was unrealistic, in spite of the fact that every aspect of the film was accurate to the actual event.
Or the story of a man walking into a place where he didn't belong, nonchalantly passing several guards, who did nothing because he seemed like he knew where he was going, and ultimately ended up in the living quarters of the Queen of England, being in the same room with her. That's an absolutely ridiculous story, except that it's true. Doesn't make for a good movie though.
That's all I'm saying. A narrative generally isn't meant to inform. Hitchcock was a big believer in the separation of narratives and documentaries. So I don't argue that movies like "The Hurt Locker" or "Gravity" or "The Social Network" are not how it was in real life, but I do find that to be an interesting reason not to enjoy a movie. But, I was also under the impression that the criticism extended further than just the military, until I saw ur comment. So maybe the criticism wasn't as wide-spread as I thought.
Austin's Obsession Productions plus there's a long scene where the characters have to unjam a gun by cleaning blood off the bullets with their spit. I mean come on. Can't get more realistic than that
They didn't actually portray conduct or protocol, but they nailed the grit, fear, and anxiety of war.
The depiction is real but the writing is not based on real events, which was ok for movie
Had no idea about her painting background. Thank you for including that!
Since "Hurt Locker" I've been sold on this talented woman. Good fortune to her future.
Zero Dark Thirty was great and I think her and Mark Boal making a good team when commenting on big political topics for the most part so I'm really excited to see Detroit this weekend.
I think this channel has really found a niche with these types of Videos. I like them a lot, they require research and effort which i respect. Even better when they are as well made as this one. Detroit itself didnt really interest me until i read that she was in control
Near Dark is one of my all-time favorite movies.
weehawk Mine as well. Favourite line was from Jesse: "I fought for the south...we lost." Second favourite was from the child vampire: "He's so ugly he makes my gums ache." I use that one ALL THE TIME.
Strange Days was awesome!
yaaaaaas!!!!!!! dude i qctively searched black female white male love interest film at 13 and found this film
Point Break was good and I don't think a lot of people would argue with that.
I've only seen one of her movies but already that became one of my favorite films ever in the form of Strange Days. It was awesome, intriguing, shocking, intense, and criminally underrated.
3:35 neither hurt locker nor zero dark thirty were questioning America’s foreign policy. The movies takes a closer look at human heroism during the moments of grave danger. The antagonists in both movies make the extraordinary sacrifice for their goals. To say that Kathryn use war movies to “question American foreign policy” is to repeat a popular phrase without any substance.
I love her courage of filmmaking!
She is a really great director.
I have seen 2 of her movies, Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. I didn't really like them at all. That was years ago though so I might go back and rewatch them. As for Detroit, I'm going into it pretty hyped. I love the city and I have a friend who is in it he is playing "Police Officer #1."
Before The Credits how did you manage to miss Point Break? It's a classic.
Very talented and beautiful woman.
Love your videos! Hopefully one day the Alien one can be re-uploaded
❤❤❤❤❤
Detroit vs Everybody

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I love watching Zero Dark Thirty, but I question it's authenticity. From what I understand, it was taken directly from CIA agents' testimony, which makes me doubt at least some of this account. I feel like it's saying "hey, what we (the U.S.) did in prison facilities like Gitmo wasn't that bad". Never the less, it's a good movie.
Good info here too! I ididn't know she did Point Break.
She makes a great action movies better than most male director, I don't care if the movies was not realistic. I watch movies for entertainment not documentary.
sataygit Ray
She´s pretty hot for being at the same age as my grandma
I'm not the only who thinks the Hurt Locker is overrated right?
That's pretty much been the general consensus since it's oscar win
Not by critics.
Her films are average at best.
Overrated maybe but definitely not bad
@@cinemar u made any movie?
