  • Fifty years ago, social unrest ignited the city of Detroit after police raided an unlicensed bar in a black neighborhood in 1967. The violence that followed was in response to police brutality and decades of racial inequality. Over five days, more than 40 people died and more than 2,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed. The new movie "Detroit" centers on the brutality that happened at the Algiers Motel during the riots. Director Kathryn Bigelow and actor Anthony Mackie join "CBS This Morning" to discuss race relations today and the real-life people who inspired characters in the film.

Anthony Mackie's performance was incredible; I just can't get with him not wanting to meet with the actual person he played, think he deserves more respect than that. Nonetheless, Detroit is an important film. And for the ignorant comments below about "bleeding liberals", I'll take a bleeding white heart over an ignorant white person any day. Empathizing with others' experience is how we can make this world right. It is a strength.

Detroit is one very terrific and strong movie. Let's hope it's not forgotten in Awards Season.

Rick Mileske Who cares if it's forgotten or not during the awards. Nobody is going to watch the Academy Awards this year, same as last year. (The show last year earned its 2nd all time lowest rating in its entire broadcast history)

He was very right about the fact that America is in a pressure cooker. George Floyd's death was the proverbial match.

"Could Detroit happen today?".......It is happening today. That's why it's almost unbearable to watch. At the same it's an important movie.

Sadly, the predictions by Kathryn Bigalow and Anthony MacKie about another Detroit situation proved to be correct, as was seen last year with the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minnapolis. Detroit is a superb and outstanding film which perfectly portrays the racial tensions, the riots and racism which are still so prelevant in the States today. Despite the efforts of people like Martin Luther King to bring about peaceful and non violent change and to bring everybody closer together, these problems and attitudes shown so clearly in the film are still there today with no sign at all they will disappear in the near future or even in the long term future. While the Hurt Locker was not a bad film, she should have got the Best Director award for Detroit instead.
